In order to understand the concept of cultural model, the concept of culture needs to be taken in a broader than usual sense. If the culture of a nation includes all aspects of its spiritual and intellectual life – science, religion, morals, art and literature, politics and law, the military and the economy, customs and pastimes, it becomes possible to form an idea of what its cultural model is like. The prevailing cultural model of a nation and the cultural model of an individual can either coincide or diverge. In the nineteenth century, the traditional Serbian cultural model was gradually abandoned in favour of west-European national, political and moral models, and occasionally foreign perceptions of the Serbian people and its culture were embraced. The nineteenth-century Serbian intellectual elite, however, neither adopted any one foreign cultural model nor built its own. Slobodan Jovanović stresses as strange that an individualistic nation such as Serbian has not paid more attenti...on to building a cultural model that an individual needs more than the community does.
