This essay deals with the Cyrillo-Methodian heritage in the penitentials or
handbooks of penance of medieval Serbia. This heritage can be seen through
the presence of the text of the oldest Slavonic penitential The Commandments
of Holy Fathers (Zapovedi svetih otaca) and in two canons of the Nomokanon of
Methodius. While the latter book, the Nomokanon, was translated from Greek, the
former one represents the translation of the Latin Poenitentiale Merseburgense.
This essay provides a general overview of previous research on the Old Slavonic
penitential, concerning both its place in early Slavic literary traditions and its later
reception in Serbo-slavonic texts of the 14th and 15th centuries.
Around two-thirds of the text of The Commandments is included in a later
penitential compilation named The Rules of Holy Fathers according to the Commandment
of St Basil the Great to all of us (Jagić №6), whose oldest preserved
manuscripts date back to the middle of the 14th century. An... important question
that poses itself concerns the dating of the composing of the late medieval Serbian
penitential. Analysis of its content indicates that the Serbian penitential can
be indirectly linked with the period of Emperor Dušan’s codification by means
of the abridged version of Matthew Blastares’ redaction of the Rules of John the
Faster, which was copied along with the other texts of Emperor Dušan’s codification.
(It should be noted that this version represents а kind of lists of sinners and
penances which can also be found in some Greek penitentials). That means that,
almost five centuries later, the texts from the era of Cyril and Methodios and their
followers found their particular place in the penitential compilations of medieval
Serbia. In this context, the presence of The Commandments of the Holy Fathers
is particularly important, as this text does not merely convey the old Slavonic
literary traditions but also the early medieval Latin penitential practices into the
Serbian handbooks of penance all the way to the beginning of the 17th century.
