In this paper, I juxtapose two language ideologies: one assimilatory, created by the state, and the other, ethno-confessionally based, (re)produced by the non-Magyar population. Although they were opposed, they share the same underlining ideological basis, which is monolingual nationalism. Since the end of the 18th century, the Habsburg imperial language policy balanced between organizing diversity, on the one hand, and hegemonic and assimilative tendencies, on the other. In the Dual Monarchy Hungarian was imposed as the state language and became the main language of education in the Hungarian part of the Empire. The Magyarization policy resulted in a silent boycott of Hungarian in non-Magyar schools. The policy of Magyarization continued in interwar Hungary, but the greatest resistance to it was offered by ethno-confessional schools, which maintained autonomy in the field of education up until the Second World War. Based on field research among the Serbian community in the village of ...Szigetcsép in Hungary, I analyze memories on language use in the community and schooling between the two world wars. I argue that the same semiotic processes of constructing difference can be observed at every level, be it the state, national, or small local, and these are iconicity, fractal recursivity, and erasure. In this paper, I am primarily concerned with fractal recursivity, which entails the (re)production of patterns from one scale to another and which was the main process through which the ideology of national monolingualism operated in the multilingual society.
