The paper discusses the significance of the Studenica monastery as the most important endowment of the Grand Župan Stefan Nemanja in Serbia. Several aspects of Studenica are analised: its function as the mausoleum of the ruler, the status of an autonomous monastery, as well as the peculiarities of the architecture of wall painting, realized in a unique symbiosis of Romanesque and Byzantine art.
