The paper offers a brief overview of the territorial extension of the influence of
Cyril and Methodius and their heritage in Serbian lands in the context of the overall
political and religious circumstances before the establishment of the autocephalous
archbishopric (1219) that included Serbian and Maritime lands. The list of used
references is limited to recent scholarly publications.
The historical contextualization of early written monuments and the reconstruction
of paths of influences are largely hypothetical. However, it is indisputable
that the earliest influences of Cyril and Methodius – i.e. the routes along which the
Glagolitic script and liturgical and ecclesiastical literature in general were spread,
just like the routes of diffusion of the later Cyrillic alphabet – run through Serbian
lands. In the period when the earliest influences were spread – from the late IX until
the end of the XI century – a substratum of the Old Church Slavonic literacy took
shape amon...g the Serbs; was it was also subject to changes, which resulted in various
redactions. Its oldest surviving linguistic monument is the Glagolitic Codex Marianus.
During this period the Serb populated regions mostly belonged to the jurisdiction
of Latin Church Sees of the Byzantine coast, especially that of Dubrovnik, where
the Latin-Slavonic liturgical practice that used the Glagolitic script was suppressed.
The establishment of bishoprics in Ras opened a possibility for the diffusion of Slavonic
Glagolitic and Cyrillic liturgical and ecclesiastical literature from the Bulgarian
centres in Preslav and Ohrid during the X century. Ras was also the westernmost
bishopric of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, established in 1019. In the context of political
history, after the ecclesiastical, as well as cultural and linguistic division of
the Christian world in 1054, the rise of Serbian princes in the area of Ras after cca.
1085 and the return of the local bishopric under the jurisdiction of the Byzantine
Eastern Orthodox Archbishop of Ohrid in the early 1120s, created conditions for an
intensive diffusion of the influence of a Greco-Slavic culture and model of worship
in Serbian lands, particularly during the last third of the XII century, i.e. during the
rule of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos and the Serbian Grand Župan
Stefan Nemanja. This led to the rise of literary works of a developed redaction of
the Old Church Slavonic, which was in some cases infused with influences of the
Old Serbian vernacular language. The cultural output in the variants of the Slavonic
language and in the Cyrillic script received a decisive impetus in the years of dissolution
of the Orthodox Byzantine Roman Empire, especially after the relocation of its
capital from Constantinople after 1204, when the efforts of St Sava resulted in the
establishment of the local autocephalous church of all Serbian and Maritime lands.
The Old Church Slavonic language became the language of worship, taking over the
place in church culture that had previously been occupied by the Greek language.
