As a contribution to numerous and wide-ranging discussions on the role of scholars in ICH safeguarding, the article examines the aforementioned issue based on the author's experiences from various positions in the ICH safeguarding network in Serbia. The author emphasises experience in fieldwork as an important prerequisite for competent participation in this field, but also points to a new challenge brought by the cooperation of scholars with cultural communities in the context of ICH safeguarding. This challenge concerns putting researchers at the service of the
community in terms of equal-collaborative relations, which are ideally developed in contemporary ethnographic research. In other words, the bottom-up principle promoted by the Convention requires an additional improvement of academics' capacities. Regarding the motive for this type of engagement, the most important one is the aspiration towards reciprocity, that is, a kind of restitution for field research collaborators as a ...part of research ethics. Multidisciplinary cooperation within the national network for ICH safeguarding enabled the author to see more clearly the
specifics of her scholarly field of ethnomusicology, in relation to other humanities and social sciences relevant to the field of ICH. In addition to broad education in the field of music that
precedes the studies of ethnomusicology, as a basic difference in relation to other humanistic profiles, its specificity is based primarily on the history of the participation of ethnomusicologists in activities guided by the idea of preserving folklore / traditional music, today defined as (part of ) applied ethnomusicology. The professional engagement of ethnomusicologists as music educators – whether as teachers of traditional singing in state music schools and NGO associations in culture (the so-called cultural-artistic societies) – that is, their involvement in the domain of generational transmission of traditional music is regarded as delicate in relation to the concept of ICH. In this sense, the attitude of ethnomusicologists towards ICH safeguarding is seen not only as disciplinary specific, but also individually different. The importance of scholarly competences and specific
experience in the system of ICH safeguarding is discussed based on the author`s engagement with the particularly complex and indicative ICH element – singing to the accompaniment of the
gusle (a traditional one-string instrument played with a bow), as well as the musical practices of brass orchestras and tamburitza (a long-necked lute) orchestras in Serbia.
