The Book of Panegyrics at the Library of the Serbian Patriarchate in the Context of the Balkan Cyrillic Literature
Abstract
The manuscript was written in 1589 at the Ozren Monastery (northeastern Bosnia)
by “Timothy the deaf ” at the times of Abbot Joachim. It was kept in the Hopovo
Monastery under No. 98, and currently is in the Library of the Serbian Patriarchate,
No. 282. Timothy’s orthography is Serbian, inconsistent in using one jer-letter and
in following other rules. He was strongly influenced by his sources, which explains
why Resava and Raška orthographic features alternate.
Ms. 282 calls itself “Panegyric.” Yet, since hagiographic writings prevail there, besides,
often of the type not usually included in panegyric codices, it is more exact
to determine it as a Festal Menaion for the months from January to April. The
works in it are 34 in total. Timothy was not just the copyist, but the compiler of the
codex and had his own concept of its content, his own taste. His selection is unique
and reveals preferences to various works of the Balkan hagiographic and rhetorical
repertoire, some of... which not simply ancient but also rare and encountered for the
first time here.
Timothy selected the texts for his collection from various sources – both Serbian
copies of pre-metaphrastic lectionary menaia in a 10th-century translation and
some later translations. Ms. 282 consists of works by St. Clement of Ohrid (including
the Vita of St. Cyril and the Eulogy of Sts. Cyril and Methodius) and by John
the Exarch.
The manuscript provides us with almost all the possible variants in the repertoire of
the Serbian hagiographic and rhetorical literature by the end of the 16th century. It
reveals not only the Serbian writers’ attention to the oldest translations of the 10th
century but also their renewed interest to the original Slavic heritage of the earliest
medieval literature.
