Abstract

This paper represents theoretical and methodological analyses of a work entitled A Sample Dictionary of Synonyms, the first scientific description of synonymous words in Serbian philology, which was written and published by Jovan Sterija Popović in 1847. The first part of the paper establishes the scientific basis of the method of analysis of synonyms, which was applied in the Sample Dictionary by J. S. Popović. The second part of the paper analyzes the procedures for defining the synonyms which were applied in the Sample Dictionary. The analysis is carried out with synonymous verbs of the type moliti (‘to ask’). With this in view, we formulate certain concluding remarks about the Sample Dictionary and its place in the history of contemporary Serbian descriptive lexicography.
