An important anniversary in linguistics

Abstract

In 1957 two ground-breaking books were published in the field of linguistics Chomsky's Syntactic Structures and Lado's Linguistics Across Cultures, which have strongly influenced the development of theoretical and applied linguistics respectively over the past half-century. This paper briefly compares their widely different approaches, noting also certain points of contact that subsequent research has revealed. Substantial segments of these investigations are then presented through an analysis of the four key words in the titles of these two books. The article ends with a few fragments of the author's personal reminiscences concerning Chomsky and Lado.

Godine 1957. objavljene su dve knjige koje su probile nove staze u proučavanju jezika, Sintaksičke strukture Noama Čomskog i Lingvistika kroz kulture Roberta Ladoa, koje su snažno uticale na razvoj teorijske, odnosno primenjene lingvistike tokom proteklih pola veka. U ovom osvrtu sažeto se upoređuju njihovi radikalno različiti pristupi, ali i uz ukazivanje na izvesne tačke dodira koje su markirala potonja istraživanja. Značajan deo ovih proučavanja zatim se predstavlja kroz analizu četiri ključna pojma u naslovima ovih dveju knjiga. Prilog se završava fragmentima autorovih ličnih sećanja u vezi sa ovom dvojicom lingvista.
