Abstract

About naming practices of the Serbs in Hungary: The paper presents an overview of the state-of-the-art of onomastic studies on Serbs in Hungary. Special attention is paid to the infl uence of the Hungarian model of expressing the identity of deceased wives/spouses (e.g. Básits Dobrimirné : Básits /serb. Bašić/ Dobrimir), as found in the inscriptions in the Latin alphabet on the tombstones at the Cathedral Cemetery in Szentendre. Among other things, this phenomenon is taken as an illustration of possible research perspectives on the onomastic structure formed through the joint action of two genetically diverse and typologically distinct linguistic systems. However, it is highlighted that due to the widespread urbanization and an increasingly massive transition of the remaining Serbs to the majority language, i.e. Hungarian, the most urgent task is to collect and linguistically analyze the preserved onomastic materials by interviewing few remaining native speakers of the Serb language in Hungary.
