The focus of the study is on the parts of documentary literary works (memoirs, diaries, travelogues, letters) by Serbian authors (Milan Đ. Milićević, Kosta Hristić, Pera Todorović, Branislav Nušić, Natalija Obrenović, Nikola I Obrenović, Gavro Vuković, Ana Lunjevica) and also by foreign historians and travel writers (Alber Male, Felix Kanic, Herbert Vivien, Louis Léger, Angelo de Gubernatis, Gustavo Rasch), who left precious testimonies about the roles of music in the cultural and social life of the Principality and the Kingdom of Serbia during the reign of Obrenović dynasty,
in the second half of the 19th century. The collected data are supported by various archival materials (musical scores and other sources) that testify to the musical life of the Obrenović court. The text presents the picture of that life through the most distinctive forms of musical practices, representing musical genres, performers, and listeners in particular occasions, mentioned in memoir literature. The status of music in court ceremonials is presented, through the narratives about balls, salon music, court concerts, and receptions, but also about various cultural-artistic and
musical events out of the protocol of the court, but connected to the monarchs from the Obrenović dynasty as the organizers, participators, patrons or honorary guests. The corpus of musical compositions dedicated to the Obrenović family, mostly by Serbian, Czech, and Austrian composers, is marked as an especially fruitful field for further research. It is evident that music was an integral part of the dynamic categories of the court culture, in all the periods and the social and political changes during the rule of the Obrenović family. Through the auras of music, the heritage of national Serbian identity and the continuity of the dynasty was nurtured, in parallel with the alignment with the models of the artistic court styles in the larger European centers. Similarly to the elements of visual arts, the testimonies about the music on the Obrenović court indicate its prominent role in the specific services of the rulers’ representation, in both the national and the foreign context.",
