The aim of the paper is to present various steps in the process of data collection in the Torlak areas in Eastern Serbia and Western Bulgaria. In this article the linguonym Torlak refers to a complex of balkanized West South Slavic dialects spoken on the territories of the westernmost parts of Bulgaria, Eastern and Southern Serbia, and northern parts of North Macedonia. Additionally, this complex of dialects encompasses some insular South Slavic varieties spoken
in Romania and Bulgaria. The term Torlak in this article is not used to designate an endonym or exonym for the subethnic group to which its speakers belong.
Cilj ovog raa je da predstavi različite procese prilkom dokumentovanja građe sa torlačkog areala i Istočnoj Srbiji i Zapadnoj Bugarskoj. U ovom članku lingvonim Torlak se odnosi na kompleks balkanizovanih zapadno-slovenskih dijalekata koji se govore na teritoriji na samom zapadu Bugarsje, Istočne i Južne Srbije i severnom delu Severne Makedonije. Uz to, ovaj kompleks dijalekata obuhvata i neke insularne južnoslovnske varijetete koji se govore u Rumuniji i Bugarskoj. Termin Torlak u ovom članku se ne koristi kako bi označio endonim ili egzonim subetničke grupe kojoj njihovi govornici pripadaju.
