The poets Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833–1904) and Aleksa Šantić (1868–
1924) – poets laureates – significantly contributed to the development of dramatic
arts in their hometowns of Novi Sad and Mostar. They were work-related with the
National Theatre in Belgrade: J. J. Zmaj was a dramaturg in the National Theatre
in Belgrade (1878–1880); two most important plays by Aleksa Šantić Pod maglom
(1907) and Hasanaginica (1910) premiered at the National Theatre in Belgrade.
As the editor of the magazine Zora, Šantić alo published reviews about several
plays of the National Theatre in Belgrade. But their drama work remained in the
shadow of their poetry. Both came from middle-class families and were attracted
to drama because of the patriotic role of theatre: the importance of cherishing
the national consciousness, integrity and identity. For them theatre was also an
educational institution, and a source of spiritual, linguistic and cultural unity of
the Serbian people. J. J.... Zmaj was one of the founders of the Serbian National
Theatre and he understood the theatre as a national institution that helped realize
the rights of Serbs in Hungary. He wrote a one-act play Šaran (1864). In 1789 and
he organized the first play for children in Serbia. Jovanović is the author of the
first Serbian play for the puppet theatre Nesrećna Kafina (1881). He also translated
plays from Hungarian and German into Serbian. Šantić worked as an actor, then
as the head of the drama section of the Srpsko Pjevačko Društvo Gusle (The
Serbian Society Gusle) as the editor of the magazine Zora and as a playwright. He
wrote several plays. The history of theatre in Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot be
imagined without the drama section of the Gusle Society, as well as without the
editors and contributors of the Mostar’s literary magazine Zora. As playwrights,
they contributed to the development of dramatic literature in Bosnia and
Herzegovina, as well in Serbia.
