Lives and work of the Serbian scientists
Apstrakt
Since its foundation in 1922, the Board for studying the lives and
works of renowned Serbian scientists from the natural, technical and medical
fields has published 7 volumes of „ The Lives and Work of Serbian
Scientists". This is volume the eighth in which there are portayals of 14
scientists. So far of them have been taken into consideration for presentation
but only 99 were described. The portrayals were to be chronologically
arranged, according to the scientists date of birth, but that proved
unfeasible so the works were published as they came out and were sent
to the Board.
The editorial board of „ The Lives and Work of Serbian Scientists"
wishes to acknowledge its gratitude to the authors who took part in its
creation as well as to all future contributors who will participate in studying
the lives of scientists and thus enrich this edition. The Board encountered
numerous obstacles while preparing the edition, including the
search for suitable writers and the procure...ment of material resources.
However, we are satisfied with the fact that the importance which this
edition bears for the history of Serbian science has been recognized and
that studying the past results has now opened new cultural space and
helped time barriers to be overcome while our scientists are being authentically
presented to the world.
Finding out about the problems that our scientific masterminds
were preoccupied with, and which contributed to the development of
not only ours but the world's science too, basically represents part of
the history of science which tells us how particular sciences developed.
The observation of specific problems, the change in their courses, the
ascent but also faltering of new ideas that might make a suitable focal
point of scientific research have all contributed to a better understanding
of the history of our science, or the philosophy of science in
other words.
We feel certain that this edition will inspire new generations which
will, through exploration of particular scientific problems, find material
for their research, and that publishing it will not serve only to preserve
what is valuable in the works of individual scientists and the founders of
particular fields of exploration, but also to secure a continuum in reflections
on creative roots that could be inspirational and encouraging to new
generations.
In conclusion it may be said that this edition represents a link in a
systematic studying of the history of science which is not only to serve
to protect our scientific heritage but also to define scientific thought which
enables the future of particular sciences to be perceived from the past and
thus help the history of science become a philosophy.
