Environmental thought of Dragoljub Jovanović

In the reaffirmation of sociology as a scientific discipline after the Second World War in Yugoslavia, as well as in Serbia, insufficient attention was paid to the development of sociology, so in this context there was no study of the sociological opus of Dr Dragoljub Jovanović, the first doctor of sociological sciences here. Looking at Jovanović’s sociological thought as very extensive and complex, one can find the thoughts arising from the then traditional notion of what is actually the subject of sociology. Jovanović’s sociological thought in some elements went ahead of its time, it was misunderstood at one point, but when we study it again today, we see some visionarism. In this sense, this paper explores, in Jovanović’s part, the essence of ecological consideration of the relationship that civilization has with nature, and how he considered this problem. Therefore, as the key ecological categories in his “ecological thought”, work, country, industrialization, urbanization, consumption, the way and quality of life, etc. appear. In addition, Jovanović speaks directly about the crisis of the environment as an ecological crisis and for the causes of this crisis says that they are above all “social and moral”. Bearing in mind the richness of his overall sociological thought, as well as the fact that he wrote and considered the problems of “the environment” far away before official sociology showed interest in this problem, Dragoljub Jovanović can be regarded as the pioneer of social ecological thought in Serbia.
