Falling Stress in Non-Initial Syllables in Standard Serbian Language

Analyzed material shows occurrence of deviations from stress rules
in contemporary Serbian language, which otherwise allow for falling stress
only in initial syllables. This is supported, most of all, by compounds with
falling stress at the beginning of the second element (in both middle and fi -
nal syllables), as well as by words where falling stress occurs in the syllable
following a prefi x or prefi xoid (where the stem keeps its stress). Due to pervasiveness
of such occurrence, such stress should be deemed as acceptable
within the standard. However, the falling stress in non-initial syllables in
words of foreign origin is still beyond standard (despite some of them having
become very common), except for certain compounds and words with
a prefi x or prefi xoid. Such stress is nonstandard in certain of our dialects.
