Branislav Dj. Nušić (1864-1938), the famous writer, prolific comedist,
prominent cultural and public worker had been the first manager of
the National theatre in Skoplje and one of its founders in 1913. After
only a month, the building where the National theatre commenced its
work burnt to the ground. Since that misfortune, the manager Nušić
had been taking care to find the appropriate scene.
As things turned out, the theatre worked in improvised halls but when
the working conditions became impossible, he made the initiative for
building the new edifice. Based on the preserved documents from the
archive in the Ministry of Education and church of the Kingdom of
Serbia from 1913 to 1915, the paper presents the history of this Nušić’s
initiative alongside the survey of the work of the Skoplje theatre in war
conditions (1914-1915) till its final break in October of 1915 because of
the military operations.
