The relationship of the big European powers (Austria/Austro-Hungary,
Russia, Great Britain, France and Germany) to the uprisings in Bosnia
and Herzegovina during XIX century is an important issue of our
national history. History of any uprising in the XIX century is to a
certain extent also a history of a foreign politics of a big power. In the
span of some eighty years in which all these uprisings were taking place
the great powers had the crucial role in them. Each and every of these
uprisings is characterized by the climate which was influenced not only
by its inner dynamism but by the foreign (in)complete “concert” of the
great powers, in the first phase Russia, Austria and France and later,
Germany and Great Britain. Whole XIX century is marked with the battle
between great powers and their misuse of the uprisings in the Balkans
for achieving their own goals. This is why the “Eastern question” in this
century has become but a euphemism used by European diplomacy
for ...an easier distribution of the Turkish territories in Europe, Asia and
Africa. The common constant of such interwoven relationships of big
powers was repudiation of solving of the Serbian issue, the approach in
which all of them were united. This is why we hold rightly that the basic
characteristic of the period of the uprisings in Bosnia and Herzegovina
was to separate these Turkish provinces from Serbia.
If we try to present in barest outline the relationship of the two most
important European powers, Austria and Russia, towards the uprisings,
we can say that the first was the biggest enemy while the latter has been
an unsuccessful tutor and a controller of the Serbs.
