The paper is based on the reply to the official note asking for an opinion regarding
“the type and status of ‘the feminine forms of common nouns’ that designate
titles and occupations” in Enciklopedija Republike Srpske (Encyclopaedia of the
Republic of Srpska). The opinion was asked by an official of a scholarly institution
of the highest rank – the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska.
Conforming to the modern understanding of political correctness and the trend
of consistent “feminization” in the Serbian language, language editors sought to lingvista (linguist) was corrected to lingvistkinja (female linguist). This approach
resulted in a common-sense reaction by numerous authors of entries in the
encyclopaedia, causing a delay to the project. In order to solve the problem, the
editorial bodies asked the members of the Committee for Language of the Academy
of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of Srpska for an expert opinion.
In my written response, I have ...put forward the opinion that the use of titles,
occupations and professional names of women in “feminine forms” can be justified
neither in Enciklopedija Republike Srpske, nor in any other official and public
publication based on a serious and intellectual approach. In this explanation I have
also presented the mechanism of the motion of nouns in the Serbian language.
The responsible bodies of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of the Republic of
Srpska have decided that the occupations and professional names that accompany
the names of eminent and renowned women in the Encyclopaedia should remain in
their basic, i.e. gender-neutral form (e.g. lekar, sudija, profesor). Naturally, there
are certain departures from this “rule”: the occupations (roles) that are performed
in an indisputably different manner by men and women, when men and women do
not act as equal individuals of the “same sort” (in cases when physical appearance,
differences in strength and sensibility matter: glumac, glumica; pevač, pevačica;
košarkaš, košarkašica), or when a male and a female act as a couple (e.g. voditelj
and voditeljka; plesač and plesačica, baletan and balerina).
