Due to the existence of an energy gradient between the inner and outer
parts of the Earth, the moving tectonic plates shape its surface representing the
ultimate mechanism of the generation and destruction of the lithosphere. As in
a slow motion, tectonic plates are moving, colliding, and subducting under each
other through geological time. These extremely slow and persistent processes are
interrupted by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, which represent the most
dramatic manifestations of the geodynamics. The processes of generating magma
at high temperatures and pressures are responsible for the crust generation and
the formation of volcanoes above deep magma systems. The magma and dissolved
gases including H2
O, CO2
, S and halogen elements, move up and play a key role in
the formation of numerous ore deposits and in the chemical modification of the
atmosphere. The salutary interaction between the magmatic systems and the outer
earth spheres has largely constrained th...e physical and chemical conditions at the
surface and ultimately led to the emergence of life on Earth.
On the other hand, explosive volcanic eruptions can have catastrophic
consequences. The most recent event provides only a slight idea about the damage
a volcano can cause. In April 2010 the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland erupted
a cloud of ash that completely closed the European airspace for almost a week.
Although relatively small, this eruption caused the largest air-traffic shut-down
since World War II with an estimated two billion dollars of losses suffered by airline
companies. Several orders of magnitude larger eruptions than this one had a role
in the rise and fall of ancient empires, as well as in the creation of conditions for
historical events such as the French Revolution and the rise of fascism in Europe
in the nineteenth century. In the first part of the paper, I give an overview of the main facts that we know
about how volcanoes work and what the main mechanisms that generate different
products of volcanism are. A short overview of the methods used by scientists at the
multidisciplinary level on the problems of volcanism, its genesis, and the possible
hazard, is also presented. Today’s exploration of volcanoes in a multidisciplinary
way links geological, historical, archaeological, and palaeoclimatic evidence in order
to tell the stories behind some of the cataclysmic volcanic events. This forensic
approach to volcanology is based on the premise that only by fully understanding
the past events can valuable lessons be drawn, so that the acquired knowledge may
be applied in the event of some future catastrophic volcanic eruptions that will
inevitably happen so as to manage their hazards and risks.
In the second part of the paper, the main volcanic districts in the CircumMediterranean area are described, with a special emphasis on active and recent
volcanism in Italy, Greece and Germany. Bearing in mind the proximity of some
active volcanoes, potential hazards that the activity of these volcanoes can cause
are also discussed, such as the awakening of the super-volcano Phlegraean Fields
(Campi Flegrei) near Naples in the near future.
