After receiving the hegoumenos’ staff in perpetuity from the hands of the autokrator Alexios III Angelos in June 1199, the hegoumenoi of Hilandar were no longer obliged to go to the court for confirmation of their authority, like the other hegoumenoi of Mount Athos. With this privilege, Hilandar was excluded from any secular or church authority and had its status equated with the oldest and most renowned brethren on Mount Athos, like the other non-Greek brethren – Iveron and the Benedictine abbey from Amalfi. The autokrator also gave to the Serbian monastery on Mount Athos the right to possess one of the largest ships on the peninsula. The exceptional benevolence of Alexios III towards the two renowned monks from Serbia is quite understandable, in view of the fact that his youngest daughter, Eudokia, was the wife of the Serbian grand župan and sebastokrator, Stefan, the son of Symeon and brother of Sava. The baton of the Hilandar hegoumenos was first mentioned by Sava in the 13th chap...ter of his typikon for the monastery, and later by Teodosije in his biography of St. Sava. The baton was made of ebony with gilded silver revetment adorned with rows of pearls and coral, and an elliptical piece of red jasper on the top. Both biographers of Sava wrote about the staff he received from the patriarch on the occasion of his cheirotonia in 1219. The second baton was kept together with Sava’s relics in Mileševa, where it remains to this day. The stem of the staff was later completely covered with silver revetment in 1608 and it has a transparent sphere of rock crystal on the top. The two staffs bear the closest resemblance to the one in the left hand of the hegoumenos of Dečani, Arsenios, on fresco from the beginning of the fifth decade of the 14th century, or the staff which Gregory of Nazianzos receives from the hands of Theodosios I the Great, on the miniature in the Paris manuscript of Gregory’s sermons (Par. gr. 543) and, judging by the representations of the Heavenly Court from Treskavac, Zaum, Markov monastery or St. Athanasios of the Mouzakes brothers in Kastoria, the staffs borne by Byzantine courtiers were very similar to these – elongated with a slender stem and a spherical ending. Different pateritses, in the shape of the letter “T”, also existed during the Middle Ages.
