Abstract
Dragoljub Jovanović belongs to a small number of distinctive Serbian political thinkers of the left provenance. He was politically active since his school-age years and his studies in France afterwards, where he received a doctorate degree from Sorbonne, and later in the Kingdom of SHS, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the FNRY. Because of his sharp criticism of the regime, both before and after the Second World War, he was sentenced to jail and lost his position as a professor at the Faculty of Law. His political ideal was agrarian socialism. In order to achieve this goal, he advocated radical progressive transformation of villages and peasantry. He was the leader of the “peasant” Yugoslav oriented left-wing parties before, during and after the Second World War. He failed to achieve full co-operation with the communists during the war, although he was pro-partisans oriented. As such, despite the open criticism of the newly-established communist regime for not taking part in ...the Communist-led resistance during the Second World War, he was nevertheless included in the supreme organs of the new government until, because of criticizing the regime, he was again removed from political life and sentenced to jail. He wrote many books and records that are valuable documentary material about both political events and numerous individuals in Serbia and Yugoslavia in the first half of the 20th century.
