During the period 1810 to 1817 four basic theoretical problems concerning
the orthography of the Serbian language were opened: 1) the number of elements
of the abstract set of phonemes; 2) the correlation between the abstract set of
phonemes and the abstract set of graphemes; 3) the correlation between phonemes
and graphemes in registering specific phonemes and (certain) phoneme combinations; 4) the correlation between phonemes and graphemes in registering phonetic
changes on morphemic boundaries within the lexeme. In the mid-19“ century usus
of writing of the Serbian language showed seven types of phonological correlation
in two submorphemic levels in establishing connections between spoken and written languages (the level of relation between abstract set of phonemes and the
abstract set of graphemes, ie. the level of relation between phonemic and graphemic combinations). When in the course of analysis we shift to morphemic and
lexemic levels the question of the phonological ...correlation acquires a new dimension and becomes the issue of elementary orthographic principle.
У раду се разматрају могући типови корелације фонема и графема и проблематизује се традиционално схватање „фонолошког правописа“, које подразумева однос „једна фонема-једна графема“, у контексту развоја правописних
схватања код Срба у првој половини 19. века.
