Таворити

Abstract

У раду се указује на неке од могућих приступа у осветљавању порекла глагола таворити „живети тешко, животарити“, који у досадашњој етимолошкој литератури још није добио адекватно решење.

The paper deals with the etymology of SCr. tavoriti impf. “to live miserably, on the verge of existence”. Etymological solution depends primarily on the choice between two possible approaches to the formal analysis of the verb: а) tavoriti, with an expressive prefix ta- to voriti “feed meagerly, to allay (lit.: to cheat, deceive) one's appetite”, either related to SCr. varati “cheat, deceive”, or from *hvoriti < PS1. *xvorêti “be weak, sick” — a parallel prefixal compound for mation would be the verb ča-voriti “suffer from poverty and old age”; b) tav-or-iti, čav-or-iti from two different themes, both hard to identify, cf., however, on one side SCr. dial. taviti “leak“, and on the other Russ. čavryj “slim.” (SCr. čavor “small amount” has turned out to be a ghost-word).
