Abstract
In this article, the author points to some hitherto unobserved cases in which the native speaker of Serbo-Croatian satisfies his actual communicative needs in the most appropriate way by giving his preference to the decomposed yersion of the predicate (i.e. by using vrši uticaj instead of utiče, daje predlog instead of predlaže, etc.). A close examination of the semantic principles that govern the speaker's choice in these cases leads the author to the following conclusion of wider theoretical interest: In many instances, the speaker is free to choose the angle from which he is going to make the listener view the meaning content not only of the sentence but also of the sentence predicate, which amounts to the fact that he can represent this content in subtly different ways, calling the listener’s attention more to this or that possible aspect of it. Thus, the competition between the analytic construction and the verbal lexeme serves a relevant communicative purpose. The r...ecognition of this fact provides a natural explanation for our readiness to use decomposed predicates.
