Abstract
The term particularizer is introduced by the author. It refers to linguistic devices by which we itemize stuff and collections denoted by mass nouns or plural forms of the count nouns. A survey is given of semantic principles which underlie the use of various types of particularizers. The evidence on which it is based is drawn mainly from Serbo-Croatian, The author underlines that the purpose of her paper is both to draw attention to the significance of the notion of particularizer for general lin guistic theory and to stimulate further examination of data from various languages which could be relevant for our understanding of particularization phenomena.
