The author points out the fact that predicate adverbs are used
to modify either (1) the emergence „on the scene” of the action (he
remarked UNЕХРЕСТАNTLY, he asked AGAIN, etc.) or (2) its
performance (he moves SLOWLY, he STUВВОRNLY denied every
thing etc.). Вeing unaware of such a theoretical distinction, grammarians
as a rule classify Slavic modifiers of type (1) together with the modifiers
of type (2) labelling them inconsistently either as manner adverbs or as
temporal adverbs.
The author restricts her analysis to case (2). She states the principles
by which different types of „manner” modification come to evidence. In
addition, she gives a survey of the changes concerning the use of those modifiers which took place during the evolution of Serbo-Croatian.
