Abstract
The paper suggests a surface-syntactic description of those attributive constructions of contemporary Russian which conform to gender, number and case agreement, such as vysokaja el' 'a high fir-tree', polučennyј оtvet an answer received' etc. The research is based on written prosaic texts and does not take into consideration various prosodic phenomena which might complicate the exposition unnecessarily. The description of attribu tive constructions offered in the paper is built on theoretical principles of the linguistic Меaning — Техt model suggested by I. А. МеI'čuk — in the first place, the syntactic component of this model. The main part of the description is a comprehensive list of special surface-syntactic rules, or syntagmas, which establish a correspondence between deep morphological and surface-syntactic representations of the discussed constructions. In the presentation of the material, three surface -syntactic relations (SSR) are used: 1) simple attributive SSR..., to cover expressions containing non-isolated attributive modifiers, as in zysokaja el"; 2) descriptive attributive SSR, for expressions containing isolated attributive modifiers, as in Оbižennaja i sтиšćennaja, ona oysla із koтnatу ćResented and confused, she left the roomć, and 3) approximative ordinal SSR, for expressions containing postpositive ordinal adjectival modifiers, as in glave o šestoj approximately in the siхth chapter”. Аs the description proper is rather formal and may be difficult for some readers, especially for those of „traditional” linguistic schools, special attention is given to pro vide every rule with detailed informal explanations and a sufficient number of examples.
