Abstract

This paper is a repeated review of the establishment of the terminological system within the Society of Serbian letters with the aim of viewing this establishment from different aspects on the basis of published and manuscript documentation. The idea of the Society that the work on the terminology should be institutionalized is completely right because there is achieved criticality in the selection of terms, the width of its use and authority in recommending it to the public. However, there exist a few dead ends to which, as it seems, the Society came in its work. If the work on terminology is considered as a whole, it is possible to notice several key reasons for its short life and failure: enlightenment utilitarian, and not scientific aims; discursivity in the work of Society members; attitudes different from Vukovians’ in terms of the vision about the structure of the lexicon of the future language standard.
