Abstract
This article considers a range of evidence relevant to our understanding of both the linguistic and the cultural status of the Serbian adjective beo. the offspring of the Common Slavic lexical item *bel', during the past centuries. The evidence comes from a number of data provided by old Serbian folk songs and by present day Serbian vernaculars. The analysis of these data reveals that the meaning bright, typical of the Proto-Slavic *bel' persisted unexpectedly long in the memory of the Serbian speakers. This explains why beo. which means only 'white' in the standard language, could appear, in the past, in all the contexts pointed to by the author.
