Abstract
Of the two best known definitions of the passive diathesis: promotion of the patiens or demotion of the agens, the author favorizes the first one. The paper presents means of expressing passive diathesis in Macedonian and in Polish. Both parallels and differences between the two languages are discussed. In the focus of the discussion are the two central patterns: (1) an auxiliary verb + the old participium praeteritipassivi, and (2) the so-called *şe-constructions. They are present both in Macedonian and in Polish, but their respective status in the two languages is different.
