KUD “Bánát”: Folk Dance Group as the Vehicle of Safeguarding the Serbian Cultural Heritage in the Context of Diaspora

Abstract

The Folk Dance Group “Bánát” was established in the village Deszk in South-eastern Hungary in 1948 as a way of preserving and empowering the identity of the Serbian minority. As a result of the dynamic processes of its socio-political and cultural surroundings in Hungarian, “Bánát” experienced various shifts in ideological and performative strategies. Consequently, the current agency of “Bánát” includes various ways of presenting and performing Serbian cultural heritage, such as: 1) the stage performance of traditional dances, 2) the leadership of the Serbian táncház (lit: dance houses), 3) attendance and performance at the Serbian Balls, and 4) revival of the rituals.

Културно-уметничко друштво „Банат” основано је у селу Деска у југоисточној Мађарској 1948. године као један од начина одржања и оснаживања идентитета српске мањине. Као резултат динамичних процеса његовог друштвено-политичког и културног окружења у Мађарској, „Банат” је доживео различите промене у идеолошким и извођачким стратегијама. Сходно томе, тренутна делатност „Баната” укључује разноврсне начине представљања и извођења српског културног наслеђа, као што су: 1) сценско извођење традиционалних плесова, 2) руковођење српских плесачница (мађ: táncház), 3) присуствовање и наступање на српским баловима и 4) оживљавање ритуала.
