Vaccine Production in Serbia: Political and Socio-Cultural Determinants in Historical Perspective

The chapter is divided into three main sections, each dealing with one of the indicated historical periods. The aim in the first section is to demonstrate how local vaccine production was established in relation to global tendencies in the field, and the local context, in the last decades of the nineteenth century. This section explores the interaction of political, economic and socio-cultural determinants that led to the founding of the first Pasteur Institute in the country. Special focus is placed on the first ideas, initiatives, arguments, and motives for launching local production, all pointing to specific conceptions and meanings in that regard. The two sections following deal with the organization of vaccine production at the Torlak Institute, which developed under the influence of political, economic, and socio-cultural factors characteristic for the socialist and post-socialist periods in the country's history.
