In his memoirs, Vojislav Kostić reminisced about his encounter with Italian composer Nino Rota and their lenghty discussion on film music. The two composers most dedicated to film music of all the attendees at the Fourth Congress of Soviet Composers came to an agreement that the two key elements in film music are leitmotif (simple, memorable) and a leading, distinct instrument. Kostić argued that one of the best examples that support this hypothesis of his is Rota’s music for La Strada (1954) and later on, music for the film The Godfather (1972). In this paper, I compare Kostić’s and Rota’s approach to film music as well as their individual understanding of function of film music by looking into pivotal examples that best represent their work.
