As much as all other high-rank state positions that Vladan Đorđević occupied, his diplomatic career also draws attention. When he was appointed Serbian envoy to Athens in 1891, he
was a diplomatic novice. His occupancy of that position lasted until December 1893, when he
continued to represent Serbian national and state interests in Constantinople, where he headed
the legation from 1894 to 1897.
The years he spent in Greece were marked by persistent, patient and intensive, but unsuccessful attempts at initiating negotiations over concluding the agreement on the division of
spheres of interest in Macedonia between Serbia and Greece. Based on extensive, frequent and
detailed reports that Vladan Đorđević kept submitting to the Serbian government in Belgrade,
it was evident that Greece going through internal political and economic crises, consistently
delayed negotiations with the Serbian diplomatic representative on the issue in which Serbia
was most interested. Given th...at his interests were wide and diverse, Vladan Đorđević spent his
term in office in Greece doing his best to get better acquainted with Greek culture, economic
circumstances, situation in the army and the Greek mentality in general, which he eye-witnessed
on a daily basis on the streets, in taverns and on numerous other occasions, about which he
informed the government of his country in Belgrade in detail.
Vladan Đorđević’s diplomatic activities were primarily focused on frequent talks with
the diplomatic representatives of Russia, France, Germany and Italy. The Greek press paid considerable attention to the Serbian envoy ever since his arrival on 6 October 1891 and during his
entire diplomatic service. He was warmly welcomed by Greek intellectuals, primarily owing to
his excellent command of the Greek language. Nevertheless, the main issue because of which he
was appointed envoy to Athens was not resolved by the end of his term in office. An agreement
on the division of spheres of interest in Macedonia with Greece was never concluded, and Serbia
did not initiate any new negotiations to settle that issue until 1899.
