The meteoric career of the Greek adventurer Jacob Heraclides
Basilicos (+1563), and particularly his spectacular ascent to the Moldavian throne as »despot« (1561—1563)1 naturally impressed his contemporaries. An impression seems to have been made by the unprecedented ease with which this errant Greek scholar and soldier managed to secure the assistance of both Poles and Habsburgs and to force the then voevod of Moldavia, Alexander Läpusneanu (1552—1561) out of power.
