AB - In this paper, we investigate the role of urban planning in providing social housing in Serbia. Social housing is essential in providing affordable and sustainable housing options for low-income individuals and families. In recent years, the issue of social housing has gained traction as cities around the world face rising housing prices and a growing number of individuals experiencing homelessness. Urban planning encompasses the design and development of cities and communities to create environments that are functional, sustainable, and conducive to quality of life. Through land use regulations, transportation planning, and infrastructure development, urban planning aims at creating neighborhoods that are well-connected, economically viable, and socially inclusive. Furthermore, the position of social housing within urban plans is critical in ensuring access to essential services and amenities. This paper explores the intersection between planning and construction laws and the contemporary notion of social housing. By analyzing the general plans of the major cities Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Sad, and Niš, we investigate the extent to which urban planning has influenced the provision of social housing in Serbia over the past twenty years.

AB - This paper presents the work in progress on ELEXIS-SR corpus, the Serbian addition to the ELEXIS multilingual
annotated corpus (Martelli et al., 2023), comprising semantic annotations and word sense repositories. The ELEXIS
corpus has parallel annotations in ten European languages, serving as a cross-lingual benchmark for evaluating
low and medium-resourced European languages. The focus in this paper is on multiword expressions (MWEs) and
named entities (NEs), their recognition in the ELEXIS-SR sentence set, and comparison with annotations in other
languages. The first steps in building the Serbian sense inventory are discussed, and some results concerning
MWEs and NEs are analysed. Once completed, the ELEXIS-SR corpus will be the first sense annotated corpus
using the Serbian WordNet (SrpWN). Finally, ideas to represent MWE lexicon entries as Linguistic Linked-Open
Data (LLOD) and connect them with occurrences in the corpus are presented.

AB - Local markets have been a special setting throughout human history. Apart from their important social role, they had immeasurable economic importance as primary forms of exchange of goods (trade). Nonetheless, they experienced numerous transformational changes that affected their functioning. Like other countries, Serbia has a long tradition of market activity. However, several novelties have been introduced in recent years. Among many, the process of e-fiscalization is the main issue. Therefore, the focus of our research is based on a qualitative analysis of online media content (news and comments) related to the fiscalization of market activity. The attitudes of different categories of participants (state authorities, vendors, and customers) were analyzed. LIGRE open-access software was used for this purpose. The results of the analysis showed conflicting parties. Legislators emphasize the exclusive positive effects, while vendors point to the negative side of fiscalization. As a third party, customers (service users) have an undefined attitude in relation to fiscalization (pros/cons/neutral). There is an agreement to introduce market activity into legal flows. However, the key prerequisite is the prior resolution of a number of problems (working conditions, business costs, market monopoly, etc.).

AB - Dark tourism is fascinating because it unifies cultural heritage, history, and travels with death. Travels usually refer to hedonism and relaxation, but this niche tourism brought to the stage new dimensions: death and morbidity. Knowing that death is one of the greatest human fears, the authors investigated the domestic tourists’ perceptions of dark tourism and its development in Serbia. The research was conducted using an online survey. The questionnaire included three units: 1) sociodemographic characteristics, 2) familiarity and understanding of the dark tourism phenomenon, and 3) motivation for engaging in dark tourism. The results revealed that domestic tourists support dark tourism development, mainly due to its educational role. Tourists marked the acquisition of new knowledge, curiosity, and compassion as the primary motivators. Therefore, the older male population particularly expressed a dominant positive attitude toward the development of dark tourism. Once again, the important role of the local community in tourism development is confirmed, especially in “sensitive” forms of alternative tourism. Finally, the research contributes significantly to the theoretical framework and provides valuable guidelines for the planning and further development of dark tourism in Serbia.

Иницијатива о покретању овог разговора дошла је након искустава сарадника на радном пакету „Should I Write or Should I Act“ којим руководи др Марија Думнић Вилотијевић (у оквиру пројекта „Applied Musicology and Ethnomusicology in Serbia: Making a Difference in Contemporary Society” руководитељке др Иване Медић), а која је са тимом сарадника спровела низ радионица, разговора и концерата са становницима Центра за азил у Крњачи. Практична и теоријска знања стечена током рада на овом пројекту биће представљена заједно са знањима и резултатима колега и колегиница који су из перспективе науке, уметности и активизма били у дијалогу са људима који су искусили континуирана измештања.

Иницијатива о покретању овог разговора дошла је након искустава сарадника на радном пакету „Should I Write or Should I Act“ којим руководи др Марија Думнић Вилотијевић (у оквиру пројекта „Applied Musicology and Ethnomusicology in Serbia: Making a Difference in Contemporary Society” руководитељке др Иване Медић), а која је са тимом сарадника спровела низ радионица, разговора и концерата са становницима Центра за азил у Крњачи. Практична и теоријска знања стечена током рада на овом пројекту биће представљена заједно са знањима и резултатима колега и колегиница који су из перспективе науке, уметности и активизма били у дијалогу са људима који су искусили континуирана измештања.",

communicate various social messages and are used as instruments for fulfilling
different sociopolitical goals besides meeting public health needs. It further
suggests that such social, cultural and political influences may have real effects on
the choices of vaccine technologies or vaccine production, and aims to demonstrate
their importance in the area which is normally seen as the domain of objective
science. This is demonstrated by using the example of the locally produced oral
polio vaccine (OPV) in Serbia during the socialist and post-socialist periods in the
country’s history.

AB - One of the most common channel errors in molecular communication systems is a single adjacent transposition (SAT) error. It happens both due to molecular noise and due to the diffusive movement of molecules when some of them reach the receiver faster than others. In this paper, we propose a simple solution to this problem based on integer codes that can correct SAT errors. The proposed codes are less complex and more rate-efficient than existing codes of similar properties. In addition, the proposed codes use integer and lookup table operations, which makes them suitable for implementation on nano-controllers that will be embedded in future nano-implants.

AB - Mechanically activated strontium titanate (SrTiO3) powders with various manganese dioxide (MnO2) doping levels (1.5, 3 and 6 wt%) were prepared by solid state method. Due to the possibility of manganese ion incorporation in SrTiO3 at Ti4+ and/or Sr2+ sites a detailed analysis of the influence of dopants on the microstructure, morphology and optical properties of perovskite oxide was conducted. The investigation showed that manganese was incorporated into the lattice and surface layers of SrTiO3 particles with the presence of manganese segregation and inhomogeneities. Optical measurements indicated a shift of the absorption edge to higher values of wavelengths where the lowest value of the band gap (3.10 eV) was for the longest activation time (120 min) and the highest weight percentage of dopant (6 wt%). In the case of lower concentration (1.5 wt%), there was a significant relative contribution of the substitution of Sr2+ ions by Mn2+ ions, while the substitution of Ti4+ ions by Mn4+ ions dominated samples with an increased concentration.

AB - We demonstrate a sustainable post-processing of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy polymer (CFRP) composites by air plasma etching that permits regular electroconductive surface patterning through direct Cu galvanic metallization, in contrast to the untreated composite. Our study reveals a significant property dependence of the composite with respect to the position to the fiber/matrix composite surface and treatment. The enhancement in electrical conductivity was not compromised by the lower structural integrity of the composite, as the embedded carbon fibers remained unaffected by the air plasma etching process. The metallized Cu domains on the composite exhibit good hardness and excellent solderability potential. Thus, the electroconductive surface patterning of the composite, preceding galvanic metallization, facilitates the selective deposition of Cu layer domains. This step by step process, relying on the creation of selective electroconductive areas on the composite by plasma etching, enables galvanic metallization. Consequently, it enhances the potential for multifunctional composite applications. The feasibility of galvanic metallization brings new perspectives in selective metallization of composites by allowing the tailoring of the metal layer thickness, microstructure and selection of the metal.

Rietveld's analysis showed that the mean crystallite size in doped-activated SrTiO3 ceramics is smaller than in undoped ceramics, which is a consequence of additional crystal structure distortion due to ion substitution. Changes in the Raman spectra indicated dopant incorporation in the SrTiO3 lattice. The microstructural analysis pointed out a decrease in the mean grain size with increasing dopant concentration and time of activation. The highest values of permittivity and magnetization were observed for Mn-doped SrTiO3 ceramic mechanically activated for 120 min. Based on all the above, the optimal electrical and magnetic properties of SrTiO3 ceramics can be achieved by the appropriate choice of mechanical activation time and dopant concentration.

AB - In recent years, biopolymer-based nano-drug delivery systems with antioxidative properties have gained significant attention in the field of pharmaceutical research. These systems offer promising strategies for targeted and controlled drug delivery while also providing antioxidant effects that can mitigate oxidative stress-related diseases. Generally, the healthcare landscape is constantly evolving, necessitating the continual development of innovative therapeutic approaches and drug delivery systems (DDSs). DDSs play a pivotal role in enhancing treatment efficacy, minimizing adverse effects, and optimizing patient compliance. Among these, nanotechnology-driven delivery approaches have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties, such as improved solubility, controlled release, and targeted delivery. Nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanocapsules, nanotubes, etc., offer versatile platforms for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Additionally, biopolymer-based DDSs hold immense promise, leveraging natural or synthetic biopolymers to encapsulate drugs and enable targeted and controlled release. These systems offer numerous advantages, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. The utilization of polysaccharides, polynucleotides, proteins, and polyesters as biopolymer matrices further enhances the versatility and applicability of DDSs. Moreover, substances with antioxidative properties have emerged as key players in combating oxidative stress-related diseases, offering protection against cellular damage and chronic illnesses. AB - Titanium (Ti) is widely used in medical and dental implants. Calcium phosphate (CPs) coatings enhance Ti implants’ osteoinductive properties, and additives further improve these coatings. Recently, a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (nACP) coating decorated with chitosan oligolactate (ChOL) and selenium (Se) showed immunomodulatory effects. This study investigates the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, mechanical properties, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was synthesized, and the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating was deposited on Ti substrates using in situ anaphoretic deposition. Physico-chemical characterization was used to analyze the surface of the coating (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). The distribution of Se within the coating was examined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Bioactivity was evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF), and adhesion was tested using a scratch test method. In vitro testing determined the release mechanism of Se. SEM images illustrated the surface morphology, while AFM provided a detailed analysis of surface roughness. XRD analysis revealed structural and phase composition, and EDS confirmed Se distribution within the coating. The coating exhibited bioactivity in SBF and showed good adhesion according to the scratch test. In vitro testing uncovered the release mechanism of Se from the coating. This study successfully characterized the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates, offering insights for developing immunomodulatory coatings for medical and dental applications.

AB - While the effects of chronic exposure to microplastic particles (MPs) are extensively studied, the outcomes of a single treatment have received relatively less attention. To investigate MPs’ potential acute toxicity, including their impact on general health status (victual consumption, sensorimotor deficits, and clinical toxicity signs) and serum biochemical parameters (markers of organ/tissue function and oxidative stress indicators), we administered thoroughly characterized MPs (1.4, 35, or 125 mg/kg), generated from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, to adult male Wistar rats via oral gavage. The MPs’ short-term effects were assessed with well-established tests and methods. The results point to the absence of sensorimotor deficits and clinical toxicity signs, while levels of markers of liver, heart, and kidney function were altered in all MP groups. Decreased victual consumption and increased levels of oxidative stress indicators were evident following treatment with the two higher MP doses. Presented data indicate that examined MPs are able to initiate the development of local changes in tissues and organs within a short time frame, potentially leading to their damage and dysfunction. This study may increase the awareness of the detrimental effects of plastic contamination, as even a single exposure to MPs may provoke adverse health outcomes.

AB - Super-hard (Hf,Mo,Ti,V,W)B2 was synthesized by boro-carbothermal reduction and densified by spark plasma sintering. This composition was produced for the first time as a single-phase ceramic in the present research. The optimized ceramic had a single hexagonal AlB2-type crystalline phase with a grain size of 3.8 µm and homogeneous distribution of the constituent metals. The Vickers hardness exhibited the indentation size effect, increasing from 27 GPa at a load of 9.8 N to as high as 66 GPa at a load of 0.49 N. This is the highest hardness reported to date for high entropy boride ceramics.

AB - Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been the main protagonist in the quest for an ideal biomaterial for regenerative medicine over the last half a century. To control its properties, this material has commonly been doped with chemical elements other than its natural stoichiometric constituents: Ca, O, P, and H. Here, we report on the first analysis of the biological response to germanium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ge-HAp). Cytotoxicity, osteogenic differentiation induction, and colony formation potential were measured on dental pulp stem cells, while the antimicrobial effect was assessed against Gram-negative Escherichia coli, Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans. All analyses were run in comparison to Ge-free HAp. Cell viability was inversely dependent on the nanoparticle concentration and incubation time. Adding Ge to HAp reduced cell viability relative to HAp after 24–72 h incubation periods, but the effect was reversed after longer incubations, when the viability of cells treated with low doses of Ge-HAp exceeded that of HAp-treated cells and became comparable with control culture. Both HAp and Ge-HAp induced mineral formation in the cell culture, but the effect was more pronounced for Ge-HAp. Likewise, relative to both control cells and cells exposed to HAp, Ge-HAp upregulated the expression of all three osteogenic markers analyzed, namely, alkaline phosphatase, RUNX2, and osteocalcin, exerting the key influence on osteogenesis in its early, differentiation stage. The colony formation capacity of stem cells, however, was impaired by HAp and even more so by Ge-HAp. The antimicrobial effect was dependent on the microorganisms tested. Thus, whereas the antimicrobial activity was absent against E. coli, it was evident against MRSA and C. albicans. While the antibacterial activity against MRSA was weakened by the addition of Ge to HAp, the antimycotic activity against C. albicans was intensified with the addition of Ge. These findings demonstrate a significant potential of Ge-doped HAp nanoparticles in regenerative medicine due to their pronounced biocompatibility, osteoinductivity, and antimicrobial activity.

While the antibacterial activity against MRSA was weakened by the addition of Ge to HAp, the antimycotic activity against C. albicans was intensified with the addition of Ge. These findings demonstrate a significant potential of Ge-doped HAp nanoparticles in regenerative medicine due to their pronounced biocompatibility, osteoinductivity, and antimicrobial activity.",

AB - Since LiFePO4 batteries play a major role in the transition to safe, more affordable and sustainable energy production, numerous strategies have been applied to modify LFP cathode, with the aim of improving its electrochemistry. In this contribution, a highly vanadium-doped LiFe0.9V0.1PO4/C composite (LFP/C-10V) is synthesized using the glycine combustion method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetry Differential Thermal Analysis (TGDTA) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). It is shown that 10wt.% of vanadium can substitute Fe positions, thus decreasing unit cell volume, which is followed by generation of Li3V2PO4 traces, as detected by CV. High vanadium doping does not change the carbon content in the composite (≈ 13 wt.%) but improves its electronic conductivity and electrochemical performance in both aqueous and organic electrolytes. The reversibility and current response are increasing following the trend: LFP/C, LFP/C -3mol%V, LFP/C - 5mol % and LFP/C-10 mol %. The best specific capacity is obtained for the most highly doped olivine, which exhibits a reversible process at 1 mV s-1 in an aqueous electrolyte, thus showing a peak-to-peak distance of 56 mV. The high capacity of LFPC-10V is measured in both LiNO3 and NaNO3 electrolytes amounting to around 100 mAh g-1 at 20 mV s-1. Still, the material is only stable in LiNO3 electrolyte, making it more suitable for Li than Na-ion aqueous rechargeable batteries.

AB - This paper presents a class of integer codes that are suitable for use in various optical networks. The presented codes are generated with the help of a computer and have the ability to correct l-bit burst errors corrupting one b-bit byte (1 ≤ l < b) and single errors corrupting two b-bit bytes. To evaluate the performance of the presented codes, we analyze their probabilities of incorrect decoding for two types of channels. In addition, the paper shows that the proposed codes can be interleaved without using an interleaver, which allows the decoder to correct all l-bit burst errors as well as many random errors.

AB - In this work, we synthesized a new composite material comprised of previously formulated resveratrol nanobelt-like particles (ResNPs) and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), namely ResSeNPs. Characterization was provided by FESEM and optical microscopy, as well as by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, the last showing hydrogen bonds between ResNPs and SeNPs. DPPH, TBA, and FRAP assays showed excellent antioxidative abilities with ResNPs and SeNPs contributing mainly to lipid peroxidation inhibition and reducing/scavenging activity, respectively. The antibacterial effect against common medicinal implant colonizers pointed to notably higher activity against Staphylococcus isolates (minimal inhibitory concentrations 0.75–1.5%) compared to tested gram-negative species (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Antibiofilm activity against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and P. aeruginosa determined in a crystal violet assay was promising (up to 69%), but monitoring of selected biofilm-related gene expression (pelA and algD) indicated the necessity of the involvement of a larger number of genes in the analysis in order to further establish the underlying mechanism. Although biocompatibility screening showed some cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in MTT and alkaline comet assays, respectively, it is important to note that active antioxidative and antibacterial/antibiofilm concentrations were non-cytotoxic and non-genotoxic in normal MRC-5 cells. These results encourage further composite improvements and investigation in order to adapt it for specific biomedical purposes.

AB - Goal: Clinical interpretation of an electrocardiogram (ECG) can be detrimentally affected by noise. Removal of the electromyographic (EMG) noise is particularly challenging due to its spectral overlap with the QRS complex. The existing EMG-denoising algorithms often distort signal morphology, thus obscuring diagnostically relevant information. Methods: Here, a new iterative regeneration method (IRM) for efficient EMG-noise suppression is proposed. The main hypothesis is that the temporary removal of the dominant ECG components enables extraction of the noise with the minimum alteration to the signal. The method is validated on SimEMG database of simultaneously recorded reference and noisy signals, MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and synthesized ECG signals, both with the noise from MIT Noise Stress Test Database. Results: IRM denoising and morphology-preserving performance is superior to the wavelet- and FIR-based benchmark methods. Conclusions : IRM is reliable, computationally non-intensive, fast and applicable to any number of ECG channels recorded by mobile or standard ECG devices.

AB - This study presents an analysis of films which consist of two layers; one layer is PVDF as the matrix, along with fillers BaTiO3 (BT), and the second is one bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) filled with Fe3O4. The mass fraction of BT in PVDF was 5%, and the samples were differentiated based on the duration of the mechanical activation of BT. This innovative PVDF laminate polymer with environmentally friendly fillers aligns with the concept of circular usage, resulting in a reduction in plastic content and potential improvement of the piezoelectric properties of the entire composite. This work presents new, multifunctional “green” packaging materials that potentially could be a good alternative to specific popular materials used for this purpose. The synthesis of the films was carried out using the hot press method. Tensile tests, water vapor permeability examination, and structural analyses using SEM-EDS and FTIR have been conducted. The sample PVDF/BT20/BNC/Fe3O4 exhibited the best barrier properties (impermeability to water vapor), while the highest tensile strength and toughness were exhibited by the PVDF/BT5/BNC/Fe3O4 sample.

AB - Four samples containing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) of various sizes are prepared employing a simple low-temperature method of oxidative precipitation from FeCl2∙4H2O-NaOH-NaNO3 aqueous solution. For the preparation of two samples, the usual oxidation-precipitation synthesis protocol is modified by using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelating agent as a stabilizer of the Fe2+ ions in a solution, which results in the partial capping of the prepared MIONs with EDTA molecules. Three out of four samples are subjected to citric acid (CA) functionalization in the post synthesis protocol. Structural and magnetic properties of the synthesized MIONs are assessed using various experimental techniques (XRD, TEM, Fourier transform infrared, dynamic light scattering, Mössbauer, and SQUID). The average size of spherical-like MIONs is tuned from 7 nm to 38 nm by changing the synthesis protocol. Their room temperature saturation magnetization, M s, is in the range of 43 to 91 emu g−1. Magnetic heating ability, expressed via specific absorption rate value, which ranges from 139 to 390 W/gFe, is discussed in relation to their structural and magnetic properties and the possible energy dissipation mechanisms involved. The best heating performance is exhibited by the sample decorated with EDTA and with a bimodal size distribution with average particle sizes of 14 and 37 nm and M s = 87 emu g−1. Though this sample contains particles prone to form aggregates, capping with EDTA provides good colloidal stability of this sample, thus preserving the magnetic heating ability. It is demonstrated that two samples, consisting of 7 nm-sized CA- or 14 nm-sized EDTA/CA-functionalized superparamagnetic MIONs, with a similar hydrodynamic radius, heat in a very similar way in the relatively fast oscillating alternating current magnetic field, f = 577 kHz.

AB - Recovering the bioactive components from pomegranate peel (PP) in the fruit-processing industry has attracted great attention in terms of minimizing the waste burden, as well as providing a new source of a multitude of functional compounds. The present study aimed to develop a feasible microencapsulation process of PP extract by using pectin and a pectin/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) blend as coating materials. Microsized powders obtained by a spray drying technique were examined in terms of technological characteristics, exhibiting high powder yield and desirable moisture content, flowability, and cohesive properties. Assuming that the interactions with the used biopolymers occur on the surface hydrophobic domain, their presence significantly improved the thermal stability of the microencapsulated powders up to 200 °C. The health-promoting effects of PP have been associated with its high content in ellagitannins, particularly punicalagin. The obtained PP powders exhibited strong antioxidant and hypoglycemic potential, while an antimicrobial assay revealed their potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, an in vitro release study suggested that the used biopolymers can modify the release of target bioactive compounds, thus establishing a basis for developing an oral-controlled release system. Altogether, biowaste valorization from PP by the production of effective multifunctional microsized powders represents a sustainable way to obtain novel nutraceuticals and/or pharmaceuticals.
