Stochastic Time Response and Ultimate Noise Performance of Adsorption-Based Microfluidic Biosensors

AB  - In order to improve the interpretation of measurement results and to achieve the optimal performance of microfluidic biosensors, advanced mathematical models of their time response and noise are needed. The random nature of adsorption–desorption and mass transfer (MT) processes that generate the sensor response makes the sensor output signal inherently stochastic and necessitates the use of a stochastic approach in sensor response analysis. We present a stochastic model of the sensor time response, which takes into account the coupling of adsorption–desorption and MT processes. It is used for the analysis of response kinetics and ultimate noise performance of protein biosensors. We show that slow MT not only decelerates the response kinetics, but also increases the noise and decreases the sensor’s maximal achievable signal-to-noise ratio, thus degrading the ultimate sensor performance, including the minimal detectable/quantifiable analyte concentration. The results illustrate the significance of the presented model for the correct interpretation of measurement data, for the estimation of sensors’ noise performance metrics important for reliable analyte detection/quantification, as well as for sensor optimization in terms of the lower detection/quantification limit. They are also incentives for the further investigation of the MT influence in nanoscale sensors, as a possible cause of false-negative results in analyte detection experiments.

AB  - Praćenje pojave i brzine korozije, nastanak termičkih oksida na površini metalnih delova eletroenergetskog postrojenјa, kao i način njihovog otklanjanja na način koji je tehnološki pogodan, ekonomski pristupačan i ekološki opravdan prikazan je u ovom tehničkom rešenju Ispitivanjem je ustanovljeno da su metalni delovi na kojima se javlja korozija izrađeni od na nerđajućeg čelika AISI 304, pa je pojava korozije i termičkih oksida praćena je u odnosu na to, kao i sastav prašine sa kojom su metalni delovi u kontaktu. Pojava termičkih oksida na površini nerđajućih čelika posledica je povišene temperature na mestu zavarivanja metalnih delova.
Merena je vrednost pH oba rastvora: etalonskog i zasićenog rastvoru prašine iz pogona.
Sastav uzoraka prašine određen je FTIR metodom, pa su na osnovu prisutnih jona u rastvoru definisana ostala ispitivanja.
Određivan je korozioni potencijal Ekor, vrednost otpora polarizacije Rp, kao i gustina struje korozije jkor. Sva ispitivanja nerđajućeg čelika u etalonskom rastvoru i u zasićenom rastvoru prašine iz pogona firme naručioca, rađena su za 1 sat i u toku 25 dana.
Kao rezultat svih istražoivanja, date su tehnološke preporuke i način otklanjanja korozije i termičkih oksida.
Rešenje je prodato naručuicu u toku 2020.godine, a od januara 2021.godine primenjeno u postrojenju naručioca, ELNOS BL d.o.o., koji su izjavom potvrdili primenu ovog tehničkog rešenja u svom poslovanju.
AB  - Monitoring the occurrence and rate of corrosion, the formation of thermal oxides on the surface of metal parts of the power plant, as well as the method of their elimination in a way that is technologically suitable, economically affordable and environmentally justified is shown in this technical solution. It has been established that the metal elements affected by corrosion were made from stainless steel AISI 304. Accordingly, the occurrence of corrosion and thermal oxides was monitored based on the material and the composition of the dust with which the metal parts are in contact. The emergence of thermal oxides on the surface of stainless steels is a consequence of the elevated temperature at the welding site.
The pH value of both solutions was measured: standard and saturated solution of dust from the plant. The composition of the dust samples was determined by FTIR. The other tests were defined based on the ions present in the solution.
The corrosion potential, the value of the polarization resistance, as well as the corrosion current density were determined. All tests of stainless steel in the standard solution and in the saturated solution of dust were performed for one hour within a span of 25 days.
Technological recommendations on how to eliminate corrosion and thermal oxides are provided.
The solution has been applied since January 2021 by ELNOS BL d.o.o.

AB  - Although selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have gained attention in the scientific community mostly through investigation of their anticancer activity, a great potential of this nanomaterial was recognized recently regarding its antimicrobial activity. The particle form, size, and surface chemistry have been recognized as crucial parameters determining the interaction of nanomaterials with biological entities. Furthermore, considering a narrow boundary between beneficial and toxic effects for selenium per se, it is clear that investigations of biomedical applications of SeNPs are very demanding and must be done with great precautions. The goal of this work is to evaluate the effects of SeNPs surface chemistry and structure on antimicrobial activity against several common bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), and Kocuria rhizophila (ATCC 9341), as well as Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739), Salmonella Abony (NCTC 6017), Klebsiella pneumoniae (NCIMB 9111) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027), and the standard yeast strain Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). Three types of SeNPs were synthesized by chemical reduction approach using different stabilizers and reducing agents: (i) bovine serum albumin (BSA) + ascorbic acid, (ii) chitosan + ascorbic acid, and (iii) with glucose. A thorough physicochemical characterization of the obtained SeNPs was performed to determine the effects of varying synthesis parameters on their morphology, size, structure, and surface chemistry. All SeNPs were amorphous, with spherical morphology and size in the range 70–300 nm. However, the SeNPs obtained under different synthesis conditions, i.e. by using different stabilizers as well as reducing agents, exhibited different antimicrobial activity as well as cytotoxicity which are crucial for their applications. In this paper, the antimicrobial screening of the selected systems is presented, which was determined by the broth microdilution method, and inhibitory influence on the production of monomicrobial and dual-species biofilm was evaluated. The potential mechanism of action of different systems is proposed. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of SeNPs was examined on the MRC-5 cell line, in the same concentration interval as for antimicrobial testing. It was shown that formulation SeNPs-BSA expressed a significantly lower cytotoxic effect than the other two formulations.

AB  - Sodium ion batteries (SIB) present one of the most perspective post lithium technology and their progress strongly depends on the development of compounds having the structure which enables fast sodium insertion/deinsertion reactions. Polyanion compounds have been widely investigated as cathode materials for SIBs where they compete effectively to the usually used layered oxides. This survey is focused on the development of specific family of isostructural polyanion phases encompassed by the common chemical formula Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7). The comprehensive retrospective of their synthesis procedures, the kinetics and mechanism of sodiation/desodiation reactions, based on both experimental and theoretical results, is provided. First, the review summarizes the structural properties of variety of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds in terms of its electrical, vibrational and surface properties. Then, the synthesis methods and sodium/lithium storage performance, of each type of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds, are chronologically presented and discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these mixed polyanion cathodes are outlined, with the aim to explain some discrepancies and unclarified issues encountered in the literature. Besides, this survey will make room for future development. It can be very useful for the future design of high-performance mixed polyanionic compounds as cathodes for alkaline-ion rechargeable batteries.

Then, the synthesis methods and sodium/lithium storage performance, of each type of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds, are chronologically presented and discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these mixed polyanion cathodes are outlined, with the aim to explain some discrepancies and unclarified issues encountered in the literature. Besides, this survey will make room for future development. It can be very useful for the future design of high-performance mixed polyanionic compounds as cathodes for alkaline-ion rechargeable batteries.

AB  - The polyanion cathodes for Li-ion batteries, namely LiFePO4, Li2FeP2O7 and Li2FeSiO4, were synthesized by very short high-temperature treatment (approximately several minutes) and subsequent quenching. Methylcellulose—a polymer with thermally driven water solubility—was used as the medium in which the precursor solutions were dispersed prior to high temperature treatment. The methylcellulose pyrolytically decomposes to carbon, thus producing the polyanion material/carbon composites of LiFePO4/C, Li2FeP2O7/C and Li2FeSiO4/C. The obtained powders have reduced crystallinity and significant microstructural characteristics: low crystallite size and notable microstrain. They exhibit stable electrochemical performances in both aqueous and organic electrolyte. The broadening of existing peaks in cyclic voltammetry and/or the emergence of new broad peaks was attributed to the presence of the amorphous phase in the samples. In galvanostatic charge–discharge tests, the materials provided high capacities at low current densities, while the highest rate performance was demonstrated by olivine-phosphate when compared to the other two materials.

AB  - Greek and Roman antiquity together with the ancient myths represent
important part of European heritage, with all the dynamic aspects that this term
bears. It goes about discursive practice that has powerful potential for choosing
and using something from the past in order to produce meanings in presence.
Perceived and constructed as a common European cradle, antiquity is specific,
being shaped and reshaped in different periods and parts of Europe with different (ideological) aims. One of the most durable traces of ancient myths are found
in psychology and psychoanalytical theory, which is directly related to the times
of its development, that coincided with the fascination with antiquity and archaeological discoveries of the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth
century. Almost everybody is familiar with Oedipus complex, but only critical
academic approach to classics and myths point to the fact that when we talk
about famous theory of Freud it does not go about interpretation of ancient myths
in ancient context, but about their re-invention. This question of Freud’s usage
of the famous myth and its reading out of ancient context was discussed in the
1960ies by French anthropologist of ancient worlds Jean-Pierre Vernant. Almost
at the same time, Pier Paolo Pasolini approached the same question in his famous
film Edipo Re (1967). The focus of this paper will be film by Pasolini and his
artistic application of Freud’s theory to the ancient myth, which opens numerous
questions important for the contextualisation and usage of myth both in ancient
as well as in contemporary context.

of the famous myth and its reading out of ancient context was discussed in the
1960ies by French anthropologist of ancient worlds Jean-Pierre Vernant. Almost
at the same time, Pier Paolo Pasolini approached the same question in his famous
film Edipo Re (1967). The focus of this paper will be film by Pasolini and his
artistic application of Freud’s theory to the ancient myth, which opens numerous
questions important for the contextualisation and usage of myth both in ancient
as well as in contemporary context.",

AB  - The oxide mixtures xCuO-(1-x) MoO3 were synthesized by gel-combustion procedure. The existence of phase mixture CuO + Cu3Mo2O9 and MoO3 + CuMoO4 in CuO-rich and MoO3 -rich composition region, respectively, were evidenced. The constant heating rate thermogravimetry in hydrogen atmosphere revealed that the reduction reactions proceed within the two clearly separated temperature regions. On the basis of mass changes, the mechanism of reduction processes was discussed. The measurements revealed considerable inhibition of CuO reduction by MoO3, and huge acceleration of MoO3 → MoO2 reduction step by copper. The particularities found in this system were commented in relation to our similar studies in NiO-MoO3 and CuO-WO3 systems. For particular composition, x = 0.5, existing preferably in form of a-CuMoO4, kinetic parameters of reduction were determined. The composition of oxide mixture influenced the particle size and morphology of resulting metallic Cu-Mo composites.

AB  - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3 and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300 oC for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 oC for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19 and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3 phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.

AB  - Local marketplaces and street vendors represent an important segment of trade in a community and one of the initiators of the rural and peri-urban development. Agricultural and other products available at marketplaces and street vendors very often originate from a wider urban surrounding or nearby villages, so both are also an important factor of the daily migrations, exchange of goods, services, and money on the relation suburb-downtown and village-town/city. This study
aims to analyze the social segments of the organization and operation of marketplaces, to provide an insight into the contemporary market processes and decision-making, and also to illustrate the future tendencies of the market outcomes of this aspect of the business. Using qualitative data processing, the results of one of the first empirical research on this topic in Serbia and this part of Europe will be analyzed. The results will show the economic, social, and cultural impact that marketplaces have on people’s everyday life and the economy of Serbia, along with defining future development guidelines. Besides, the findings of this research may be used by local authorities, the economy, and communities for future strategic development planning of this market segment. abstract = "Local marketplaces and street vendors represent an important segment of trade in a community and one of the initiators of the rural and peri-urban development. Agricultural and other products available at marketplaces and street vendors very often originate from a wider urban surrounding or nearby villages, so both are also an important factor of the daily migrations, exchange of goods, services, and money on the relation suburb-downtown and village-town/city. This study
aims to analyze the social segments of the organization and operation of marketplaces, to provide an insight into the contemporary market processes and decision-making, and also to illustrate the future tendencies of the market outcomes of this aspect of the business. Using qualitative data processing, the results of one of the first empirical research on this topic in Serbia and this part of Europe will be analyzed. The results will show the economic, social, and cultural impact that marketplaces have on people’s everyday life and the economy of Serbia, along with defining future development guidelines. Besides, the findings of this research may be used by local authorities, the economy, and communities for future strategic development planning of this market segment. AB  - The properties (densities of electrons and metastable argon atoms, effective electron temperature and dust charge) of argon/dust and pure argon pulsed plasmas are studied using a spatially-averaged model. The calculated time-dependencies for the densities of electrons and metastable atoms are compared with the experimental measurements and are found to be in a good qualitative agreement. It is analyzed how the plasma properties depend on the shape of the electron energy probability function (EEPF), the pulsing frequency and the duty cycle for both dust-free and dusty plasma. The analysis reveals that the agreement between theory and experiment is better with Druyvesteyn EEPF than the Maxwellian EEPF. Further, the variation in the pulsing frequency νp differently affects the metastable density nm in a dust-free and in a dusty plasma. For large νp, the metastable density in the dust-free pulsed plasma is larger than in the continuous-wave (CW) discharge, while the opposite is obtained in the presence of dust particles. This difference probably arises because of faster variation in the effective electron temperature in the dusty plasma due to collection of electrons by dust particles. Our calculations also show that dust particles may affect the behavior of electron density in the beginning of the on-period due to an enhancement in electron collection by dust particles.

AB  - „Stambenim pitanjem“ u međuratnoj Jugoslaviji nazivano je razmatranje stambene situacije siromašnih stanovnika i traženje rešenja za odgovarajući stan. Stambena kriza која је nakon Prvog svetskog rata potresala Evropu, bila je izuzetno izražena i u novoformiranoj Kraljevini Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca, kasnije Kraljevina Jugoslavija. Loš kvalitet nasleđenog stambenog fonda, ratna razaranja i intenzivne migracije iz sela u gradove, za posledicu su imali ozbiljan nedostatak stanova. U evropskim državama, prevashodno onim koje su imale pro-socijalističke vlade, reakcija na takvo stanje je bila višestruka, a arhitekte su imali značajno mesto u realizaciji stambenih programa. Predmet ovog rada jeste odnos arhitekata prema stambenom pitanju velikog broja siromašnog gradskog stanovništva u međuratnoj Srbiji. Njihovo angažovanje i stav su sagledani preko delovanja unutar vodećih profesionalnih udruženja i grupacija. Koristeći savremene izvore poput stručnih časopisa, izveštaja i javnih predavanja, u radu je rekonstruisan odgovor srpskih arhitekata na složeno stambeno pitanje u međuratnom period.
AB  - This paper discusses the architects’ attitude toward housing problems of the large population of urban poor in interwar Serbia. A severe housing crisis that shook Europe after the end of World War I was also very pronounced in the newly formed the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes / Yugoslavia. In European countries, especially those with pro-socialist governments, the response was manifold and diverse. It involved the establishment of garden suburbs, the construction of industrial settlements and residential districts, as well as the development of multi-year housing programs, such as the “Red Vienna” and the French Habitations à loyer modéré. Architects played an important role in the implementation of these housing projects. At their second meeting held in Frankfurt in 1929, the Congrès internationaux d’architecture moderne (CIAM) elaborated the issue of the minimum dwelling for low-income households (Die Wohnung für das Existenzminimum).
What was the response of architects and their associations to the pronounced housing crisis in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and Serbia? In 1919, Serbian architects joined the newly established Association of Yugoslav Engineers and Architects (UJIA). Among the diversified contributions that can be found in the “Technical Gazette” (Tehnički list), the official bulletin of UJIA, published twice a month, with a total of 480 issues between 1919 and 1939, the coverage of housing issues was sporadic. In this respect, the articles on Ebenezer Howard’s concept of a garden city, by architect Jan Dubový (1925) stood out for its integrated approach to the technical, economic, aesthetic and social aspects of the architectural activity related to the housing for the poor.
While the socially engaged architecture was one of the postulates of the international architectural avant-garde, the members of the Belgrade Group of Architects of the Modern Movement (GAMM) were primarily focused on the form and aesthetics of residential architecture. Branko Maksimović, one of the most active members of GAMM, was concerned with housing issues, but rather as a freelance architect than as a member of the group. On the other hand, the authorities rarely invited architects to participate in the sporadic housing projects that they implemented. The lack of an active social response of Serbian architects to the shortage of small, healthy and affordable dwelling for poor residents partly reflected the general lack of a welfare state and the political will of the ruling authoritarian regime to address the housing problem systemically.
