From Emulation to a Great Masterpiece. Two Serbian Composers of the 1950s

AB  - The basic idea of this paper is to demonstrate the different ways in which a composer may use the techniques of simulation or stylistic allusion, not to resemble a certain composer or style, but to perfect their own compositional techniques and develop individual style. With this in mind, two orchestral pieces from Serbian music history have been analysed, both written in the 1950s: Suita giocosa (1956) by Milan Ristić (1908–1982) and Passacaglia for orchestra (1957) by Ljubica Marić (1909–2003). Through the analysis of these pieces, I explore the similarities between their compositional techniques with those of the great European masters. In the case of Milan Ristić, the techniques of Paul Hindemith (1895–1963), presented in the textbook Unterweisung im Tonsatz, are the base which Ristić used to perfect his own musical language. In Passacaglia by Ljubica Marić one may notice strong influences of development variation, as explained by Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951) on Johannes Brahms’ (1833–1897) chamber music titled “Brahms the progressive”. In conclusion, the processes in these orchestral pieces represent simulation or stylistic allusion produced through emulation, bearing in mind that the level of borrowing exists exclusively within the compositional technique and that role models of Ristić and Marić, as techniques of ‘selected’ composers, remain hidden in their works.
AB  - Основна идеја аутора јесте да прикаже различите начине на које композитор
може да користи технике симулације, односно стилске алузије, али не
због тога да би наликовао на одређеног композитора или стил, већ да би
усавршио сопствено композиционо-техничко умеће и развио индивидуални
стил. Имајући то у виду, анализирали смо две оркестарске композиције из
историје српске музике, написане током педесетих година прошлог века:
Suita giocosa (1956) Милана Ристића (1908–1982) и Пасакаљу за оркестар
(1957) Љубице Марић (1909–2003). Кроз анализу ових дела, покушали смо да
уочимо сродности композиционих техника ових композитора са техникама
великих европских композитора. У случају Милана Ристића, технике Паула
Хиндемита (Paul Hindemith, 1895–1963), представљене у уџбенику Техника
тонског слога (Unterweisung im Tonsatz) представљају основу коју је Ристић
користио у усавршавању сопственог музичког језика. У Пасакаљи Љубице
Марић, уочљиви су јаки трагови развојног варирања, на начин на који их
је објаснио Арнолд Шенберг (Arnold Schoenberg, 1874–1951) у свом есеју о
Брамсовој камерној музици (Johannes Brahms, 1833–1897) под називом „Брамс
напредњак“ („Brahms the Progressive“). Коначно, закључујемо да процеси
у поменутим делима представљају симулацију, односно стилску алузију,
произведену кроз емулацију, имајући у виду да се ниво преузимања одвија
на нивоу композиционе технике и да узори Ристића и Марићеве, у виду
‘одабраних’ композитора, остају у великој мери прикривени у њиховим делима.

Experimental study of an implantable fiber-optic microphone on human cadavers

AB  - In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study about a novel fiber optical vibrometer, aimed to be used as a totally implantable fiber-optic microphone for hearing aids. The sensor head, implanted inside the human cadaver middle ear, detects the amplitude of the incus vibrations, which are produced by an external acoustical source. The probe beam of coherent vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) radiation is directed to the incus and the phase-modulated reflected beam is captured and demodulated. The problem of interferometric fading was solved using two quasi-quadrature signals, passively produced by the 3 × 3 single-mode fiber-optic coupler, processed by a special embedded algorithm. The implanted optoelectronic module works with very low-power consumption, performs real-time signal processing and outputs an analogue signal proportional to the incus vibration. The amplitude of the incus vibrations at different sound pressure levels (SPL) from 40 to 90 dB and at frequencies from 100 Hz to 10 kHz were measured by the implanted system. The system was evaluated on five cadaver skulls. The measured amplitudes were in the range of 1 pm to 5 nm, depending on the subjected skull and the applied sound pressure.

Debunking “Potentially Monolithic Perceptions of Musicology”: The Role of Musicology in Metal Music Studies

AB  - It can be said that the academic scrutinization of metal music began with two substantial studies – Heavy Metal. The Music and its Culture (1991) by sociologist Deena Weinstein and Running with the Devil. Power, Gender, and Madness in Heavy Metal Music (1993) by musicologist Robert Walser. During the following couple of decades, academic and metal communities witnessed some sporadic – but essential – contributions to the field (Purcell’s Death Metal Music: The Passion and Politics of a Subculture (2003) and Kahn-Harris’s Extreme Metal: Music and Culture on the Edge (2007), to name a few).
A series of several events that occurred near the end of the first decade of the 21st century, and especially during the 2010s, are crucial in the institutionalization of metal music studies. The foundation of the International Society for Metal Music Studies (ISMMS) in 2013 is probably the most important one, mainly because it announced the emergence of the new scientific paradigm. Following the first global conference on metal held in Salzburg in 2008, starting from 2013 the ISMMS began organizing regular international and inter/multi-disciplinary conferences biannually. Finally, the foundation of ISMMS’ specialized scientific journal, Metal Music Studies (Intellect Press, 2015), signified the beginning of the so-called autonomy that metal scholars strived for. As Will Straw noticed in his keynote speech at the ISMMS conference in Nantes (2019), this autonomy was particularly important concerning popular music studies. Metal scholars, coming from various disciplines (sociology, musicology, aesthetics, cultural studies, history, psychology, etc.), created their “intellectual hub” and started building a unique resource for the field.
With musicology playing a vital role in the field, this paper aims to examine the musicological input to metal music studies, with special attention given to studies published after the foundation of the ISMMS and its journal. This overview will encompass reoccurring topics, contemporary methodologies, and the interdisciplinary liaisons established in the research process.
AB  - Имајући у виду да је интересовање за проучавање метал музике званично отпочело у англоамеричком контексту деведесетих година прошлог века појавом две студије утемељивачког карактера – Heavy Metal. The Music and its Culture (1991) социолошкиње Дине Вајнстин и Running with the Devil. Power, Gender, and Madness in Heavy Metal Music (1993) музиколога Роберта Волсера – циљ овог текста био је да се испита улога музикологије у области студија метал музике.
Показано је да је, током три деценије све разгранатијег научног дискурса о овом музичком феномену, упис музикологије био важан не само као први корак, већ и као константан и неизоставан део говора и написа о металу. Почевши од Волсерове студије, која је par excellance продукт ’свог доба’ и нове музикологије, музиколошки доприноси овом пољу били су резултат интердисциплинарне базе дисциплине, те су тако резултати тих истраживања обухватала историографску, формалистичку, музичко-теоријску, естетичку,
филозофску, етномузиколошку, етнографску раван. 
На институционализацију студија метал музике утицало је неколико догађаја који су се одвили крајем прве деценије 21. века, а нарочито током 2010-их. Због успостављања нове научне парадигме и платформе, пре свега треба поменути оснивање Међународног друштва за проучавање метал музике
(ISMMS) 2013. године, а потом и установљивање редовних међународних и интер/транс/мултидисциплинарних научних скупова широм света. Својеврсна аутономија ове области, нарочито у односу на студије популарне музике, заокружена је успостављањем научног часописа Metal Music Studies (Intellect Press, 2015). Тако је, у односу на претходни период, где је научно истраживање метал музике остајало у запећку шире слике и спорадично се пробијало у први план, успостављена платформа на којој ће се убрзо развити дисциплинарни односи.
Иако су неки од гласноговорника студија метал музике инсистирали на оснаживању музиколошког ’гласа’ пре свега ради компетентног говора о звуку, музичким структурама и хармонско-мелодијским аспектима метал музике, овај текст је увидом у кратку али садржајну историју музиколошких написа показао да се, услед основних интердисциплинарних поставки музикологије, допринос музиколога не може свести ’само’ на музичко-теоријски рад. Штавише, он предвиђа још богатију продукцију која долази из сфере музикологије, а која ће бити инспирисана и испровцирана новим технологијама, инструментима и извођаштвом, савременим друштвом и публиком, начинима стварања,
постпродукције и рецепције музике.

Excluded communities and participatory land-use planning: experience from informal Roma settlements in Serbia

AB  - Citizen participation in the planning and decision-making process in the European post-socialist context is much debated. Still, the involvement of excluded communities in the urban planning process remains understudied. This paper presents and discusses the application of an innovative participatory approach designed to ensure active involvement of an excluded ethnic minority, the Roma community, in the process of formulating and adopting land-use plans for informal settlements in Serbia. By analysing the development of land-use plans in 11 municipalities, we observe that the applied participatory approach enhanced the inhabitants’ active participation and helped build consensus on the planned solution between the key actors. Findings also suggested that further work with citizens, capacity building of planners and administration, and secured financial mechanisms are needed to move citizen participation in urban planning beyond the limited statutory requirements.

AB  - Fayalite Fe2SiO4 is synthesized by the solid-state reaction without ball milling. The obtained powder is further structurally and electrochemically examined. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed that microsized powder is obtained. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern is used for both phase identification and crystal structure Rietveld refinement. The structure is refined in the orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed traces of Fe3+ impurity. The bond valence mapping method is applied for the first time on Fe2SiO4 framework. It shows isolated, non-connected isosurfaces of constant E(Li), which further supports the assumptions of the conversion reactions. Electrochemical performances are investigated through galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex-situ XRD and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses are combined to monitor phase change after galvanostatic cycling and to reveal the working mechanism during electrochemical lithiation.

AB  - У раду се даје кратак приказ теорије семантике оквира (енгл. Frame Semantics), на којој је заснована лексичка база Фрејмнет (енгл. FrameNet). Представљена је концепција ове мреже, као и могућности њене примене. Представљена је и лексичка анализа која се примењује у пројекту израде Фрејмнета и указано на разлике између анализе засноване на оквиру у односу на анализу засновану на речи. Затим је приказано неколико повезаних оквира које призивају речи из домена ризика. У раду је представљена и платформа NLTK (енгл. Natural Language Toolkit), помоћу које се могу користити разни језички ресурси, међу њима и Фрејмнет. Завршно поглавље пружа анализу именице ризик на корпусу рударства. Представљени су најчешћи колокати ове именице, скица њене употребе, конкорданце за поједине моделе, проналажење синонима и повезаних речи у виду тезауруса, графички приказ фреквенција појединих колокација, као и облака речи.
AB  - This paper gives a short overview of the frame semantics theory that forms the theoretical basis of the Berkeley FrameNet project. We present the basic concepts of this database, as well as the possibility of implementing it in Serbian. We also take a close look at the lexical analysis used in the FrameNet development project and point out the differences between the frame-based lexical analysis and its word-based counterpart. This is followed by an illustration of a couple of related frames evoked by words from the risk domain. FrameNet data is also readily available through the Python API included in the NLTK (Natural Language Toolkit) suite, which provides a good natural language processing resource. The last chapter shows a corpus search of the noun risk in a mining-themed corpus. We also present its most common collocates, word sketch, individual pattern concordances, thesaurus entry of its synonyms and related words, collocation frequency graphs. A word cloud for the word risk is also included.

AB  - Magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG), obtained by reaction of 3-aminosilane and subsequently with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste Cell fibers (Cell-NH2 and Cell-DTPA, respectively), and amino-modified diatomite was used for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione removal from water. Cell-MG membrane was structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR and FE-SEM techniques. The influences of operational parameters, i.e. pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass of adsorbent on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch system. The calculated capacities of 35.32 and 30.16 mg g-1 for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione, respectively, were obtained from non-linear Langmuir model fitting. Weber-Morris model fitting indicates the main contribution of intra-particle diffusion to overall mass transport resistance. Thermodynamic data indicate spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. The reusability of adsorbent and results from wastewater purification showed that Cell-MG could be used as general-purpose adsorbent. The adsorbent/adsorbate surface interaction was considered from the results obtained using density functional theory (DFT) and calculation of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). Thus, a better understanding of the relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions to adsorption performances and design of novel adsorbent with improved properties was deduced

AB  - The word mazija ‘steel; forging ingot; a kind of ordeal which required plucking
red-hot iron from a cauldron of boiling water’ is common in the western part of the
Shtokavian dialect continuum. Its area includes the Zeta-Raška, the Eastern Herzegovinian
and the Younger Ikavian dialect, the fi rst of the Old Shtokavian and the other
two of the Neo-Shtokavian type. There are no attestations of this word earlier than the
first half of the 18th century. So far, it has been mainly believed to share a common
origin with the homonymous mazija ‘oak gall’ from Turkish mazı id. This stance is
hardly acceptable in view of the fact that not only the meanings of the two words but
also their geographical distributions strongly diverge, mazija in the oak gall sense being
limited to the Kosovo-Resava and Timok-Prizren dialect areas of southern Serbia.
The comparison with French mazée ‘refi ned iron’, is even more doubtful, because
this term has been attested only since 1824 and with no known etymology, The true
origin of màzija < mazȉja (gvožđa) should be sought in the late Greek (5th century
AD) μαζί(ο)ν τοῦ σιδήρου ‘iron mass shaped by a blacksmith’; the plural form μαζία
σιδήρου occurs in a Greek charter issued in 1347 by the Serbian tsar Dušan to the
Great Lavra on Mt Athos. Curiously enough, in two Serbian founding charters of the
same epoch there is a parallel passage where among other yearly incomes granted to
the monastery iron ingots are mentioned, designated here by the gen. pl. nadь(ь), with
complements gvozd(i)ja ‘of iron’ and měr’nyhь ‘of a standard weight’. The term is
Slavic nada or nado, derivative from *naděti ‘add onto’, properly ‘iron or steel overlay
used as a cover plate in re-tempering a blade’, hence ‘steel’. It has been preserved
by a number of Serbian vernaculars, in some of them coexisting with the Graecism
mazija. How and when the latter made its way to the western part of the Old Serbian
territory, leaving no traces in its eastern parts, remains an open question.

On the Role of Poly-Glutamic Acid in the Early Stages of Iron(III) (Oxy)(hydr)oxide Formation

AB  - Nucleation of minerals in the presence of additives is critical for achieving control over the formation of solids in biomineralization processes or during syntheses of advanced hybrid materials. Herein, we investigated the early stages of Fe(III) (oxy)(hydr)oxide formation with/without polyglutamic acid (pGlu) at low driving force for phase separation (pH 2.0 to 3.0). We employed an advanced pH-constant titration assay, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis with mass spectrometry, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Three stages were observed: initial binding, stabilization of Fe(III) pre-nucleation clusters (PNCs), and phase separation, yielding Fe(III) (oxy)(hydr)oxide. The data suggest that organic–inorganic interactions occurred via binding of olation Fe(III) PNC species. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses revealed a plausible interaction motif and a conformational adaptation of the polypeptide. The stabilization of the aqueous Fe(III) system against nucleation by pGlu contrasts with the previously reported influence of poly-aspartic acid (pAsp). While this is difficult to explain based on classical nucleation theory, alternative notions such as the so-called PNC pathway provide a possible rationale. Developing a nucleation theory that successfully explains and predicts distinct influences for chemically similar additives like pAsp and pGlu is the Holy Grail toward advancing the knowledge of nucleation, early growth, and structure formation.

AB  - Thermodynamic parameters (densities, viscosities, speed of sound, and refractive index) of four series of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range from 15 to 60 °C for the process of geopolymerization. Mixtures of Na2SiO3and NaOH of different molar concentrations (from 2M to 8M with step 2) were used as an alkaline activator. The sample with the highest NaOH concentrationalso shows the highest values of all thermodynamic parameters.Metakaolin, obtained by calcination of kaolin at 750 °C, was used as the starting material.The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Spectroscopy. Results of FTIR analysis correlated with results of Raman Spectroscopy. Due to the polymerization process, the changes in the phonon spectrum were confirmed. The different concentra-tions of activators do not notably change the Si/Al ratio.

AB  - The MMWICP (miniature microwave ICP) is a new plasma source using the induction principle. Recently Klute et al presented a mathematical model for the electromagnetic fields and power balance of the new device. In this work the electromagnetic model is coupled with a global chemistry model for nitrogen, based on the chemical reaction set of Thorsteinsson and Gudmundsson and customized for the geometry of the MMWICP. The combined model delivers a quantitative description for a non-thermal plasma at a pressure of p = 1000 Pa and a gas temperature of Tg = 650–1600 K. Comparison with published experimental data shows a good agreement for the volume averaged plasma parameters at high power, for the spatial distribution of the discharge and for the microwave measurements. Furthermore, the balance of capacitive and inductive coupling in the absorbed power is analyzed. This leads to the interpretation of the discharge regime at an electron density of ne ≈ 6.4 × 1018 m−3 as E/H-hybridmode with an capacitive and inductive component.

In this work the electromagnetic model is coupled with a global chemistry model for nitrogen, based on the chemical reaction set of Thorsteinsson and Gudmundsson and customized for the geometry of the MMWICP. The combined model delivers a quantitative description for a non-thermal plasma at a pressure of p = 1000 Pa and a gas temperature of Tg = 650–1600 K. Comparison with published experimental data shows a good agreement for the volume averaged plasma parameters at high power, for the spatial distribution of the discharge and for the microwave measurements. Furthermore, the balance of capacitive and inductive coupling in the absorbed power is analyzed. This leads to the interpretation of the discharge regime at an electron density of ne ≈ 6.4 × 1018 m−3 as E/H-hybridmode with an capacitive and inductive component.",

Freeze vs. Spray Drying for Dry Wild Thyme (Thymus serpyllum L.) Extract Formulations: The Impact of Gelatin as a Coating Material

AB  - Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drugs in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration and heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher total powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher total powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount ~190 and 53–75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation was distinguished from the others by a higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. The type of the drying process mainly affected the position of the gelatin-derived -OH and amide bands in FTIR spectra. Spray-dried formulations compared to freeze-dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and a higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151–223 µm) compared to small microspheres (~8 µm) in spray-dried powder.

AB  - Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 °C. As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N2 physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m2/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m2/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20–50 °C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of −4.95%/K at room temperature (25 °C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 °C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hzπ1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 °C, the sensitivity of 327.36 ± 80.12 kΩ/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

Photovoltaics advancements for transition from renewable to clean energy

AB  - Moving from fossil fuels toward renewable resources of energy has a worldwide consensus. Solar energy alone can satisfy all our energy requirements since the earth receives 725 ZJ of energy from the sun each year while total human energy consumption in 2019 was 0.584 ZJ. The 2010s are highlighted as a transitional decade when the photovoltaic conversion industry transformed from a subsidized to a profitable energy sector. While photovoltaic energy conversion is a clean process, technologies for producing photovoltaic materials and solar panels affect the environment. The utilization of photovoltaic materials with low impact on the environment during the entire life cycle will mark the beginning of the sustainable transition toward 100% clean renewable energy sources in a sustainable manner. Thus far, only perovskite compounds have the potential to satisfy these requirements because of their theoretical conversion efficiencies, ease of synthesis, production scalability, adaptability, and comparability to existing photovoltaic systems. In this article, the rise of the photovoltaic industry in the last decade is shown and requirements in further transition from renewable to clean sources of renewable energy are foreseen.

AB  - The aim of this work was to investigate corrosion resistivity, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity of novel nano-amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) potentially multifunctional composite coatings with and without chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL), ACP + ChOL/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2 ACP + ChOL/TiO2, respectively, on the titanium substrate. The coatings were obtained by new single-step in situ anodization of the substrate to generate TiO2 and the anaphoretic electrodeposition process of ACP and ChOL. The obtained coatings were around 300 ± 15 μm thick and consisted of two phases, namely, TiO2 and hybrid composite phases. Both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 have improved corrosion stability, whereas the ACP + ChOL/TiO2 coating showed better corrosion stability. It was shown that at the very start of the deposition process, the formation of the ChOL/TiO2 layer takes place predominantly, which is followed by the inclusion of ChOL into ACP with simultaneous growth of TiO2. This deposition mechanism resulted in the formation of strongly bonded uniform stable coating with high corrosion resistance. In vitro bioactivity was investigated by immersion of the samples in simulated body fluid (SBF). There is in-bone-like apatite formation on both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 surfaces upon immersion into SBF, which was proven by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. While ACP/TiO2 shows no antibacterial activity, ACP + ChOL/TiO2 samples exhibited three- to fourfold decreases in the number of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively, after 420 min. The probable mechanism is binding ChOL with the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting its growth, altering the permeability of the cell membrane, and leading to bacterial death.

AB  - The aim of this work was to investigate corrosion resistivity, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity of novel nano-amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) potentially multifunctional composite coatings with and without chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL), ACP + ChOL/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2 ACP + ChOL/TiO2, respectively, on the titanium substrate. The coatings were obtained by new single-step in situ anodization of the substrate to generate TiO2 and the anaphoretic electrodeposition process of ACP and ChOL. The obtained coatings were around 300 ± 15 μm thick and consisted of two phases, namely, TiO2 and hybrid composite phases. Both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 have improved corrosion stability, whereas the ACP + ChOL/TiO2 coating showed better corrosion stability. It was shown that at the very start of the deposition process, the formation of the ChOL/TiO2 layer takes place predominantly, which is followed by the inclusion of ChOL into ACP with simultaneous growth of TiO2. This deposition mechanism resulted in the formation of strongly bonded uniform stable coating with high corrosion resistance. In vitro bioactivity was investigated by immersion of the samples in simulated body fluid (SBF). There is in-bone-like apatite formation on both ACP/TiO2 and ACP + ChOL/TiO2 surfaces upon immersion into SBF, which was proven by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. While ACP/TiO2 shows no antibacterial activity, ACP + ChOL/TiO2 samples exhibited three- to fourfold decreases in the number of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively, after 420 min. The probable mechanism is binding ChOL with the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting its growth, altering the permeability of the cell membrane, and leading to bacterial death.

ACP/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2/ /ChOL were deposited onto Ti by a novel in situ anodization/anaphoretic process at constant voltage. Cytotoxicity tests showed that there was no significant decrease in the survival of healthy MRC-5 cells exposed to composite samples without chitosan lactate, while there was an increase in the number of viable cells in the sample containing ChOL. These findings show that there was improved cell proliferation, differentiation and cell viability in the ChOL-containing sample, which makes ACP/TiO2/ChOL coating a good candidate for applications in medicine and stomatology.

Functional and Environmental Advantage of Cleaning Ti5B1 Master Alloy

AB  - One of the greatest environmental goals for the aluminum alloys industry is generating higher quality products by introducing cleaner input materials while maintaining low production costs. A typical dilemma for the master alloy producers is the cleanness level of the master alloy since insoluble inclusions could serve as inoculants during the solidification process. In this work, commercial Ti5B1 master alloy is used for grain refinement of Al7Si4Cu aluminum alloy and compared with the cleaned master alloy that contained a lower amount of residual refractory oxides and salts. Metallography analysis was used for grain size measurement while Computer Aided Cooling Curve Analysis was used for assessment of the undercooling and heat release values. In all instances, specimens treated with the cleaned master alloy showed smaller grains in the final structure and lower undercooling values. The difference in released heat between liquidus and recalescence temperatures was about 25% in specimens where added 0.66 wt% of cleaned master alloys compared to specimens where the commercial master alloys were added. Using cleaner Ti5B1 master alloy with a higher number of TiAl3 and TiB2 particles improves its grain refinement efficiency and transmits fewer impurities in produced parts. Producing cleaner master alloy would be beneficial from economic and environmental aspects by increasing its value and service time of produced parts besides simplifying the recycling process at the end of parts life-cycle.

Photovoltaics advancements for transition from renewable to clean energy

AB  - Moving from fossil fuels toward renewable resources of energy has a worldwide consensus. Solar energy alone can satisfy all our energy requirements since the earth receives 725 ZJ of energy from the sun each year while total human energy consumption in 2019 was 0.584 ZJ. The 2010s are highlighted as a transitional decade when the photovoltaic conversion industry transformed from a subsidized to a profitable energy sector. While photovoltaic energy conversion is a clean process, technologies for producing photovoltaic materials and solar panels affect the environment. The utilization of photovoltaic materials with low impact on the environment during the entire life cycle will mark the beginning of the sustainable transition toward 100% clean renewable energy sources in a sustainable manner. Thus far, only perovskite compounds have the potential to satisfy these requirements because of their theoretical conversion efficiencies, ease of synthesis, production scalability, adaptability, and comparability to existing photovoltaic systems. In this article, the rise of the photovoltaic industry in the last decade is shown and requirements in further transition from renewable to clean sources of renewable energy are foreseen.

Flexibility index and decreasing the costs in energy systems with high share of renewable energy

AB  - Recent European Green Deal includes decision to become carbon neutral and even carbon negative region in order to tackle the climate crisis. Main technical challenge and a key factor in techno-economic analysis of the energy system of the future, based on variable renewable energy sources, is their variable production and its integration. In order to deal with this problem in long-term energy planning, different approaches have been tried, focusing on overcapacity, storage capacities and sectors coupling with heating and transport. In this research, different flexibility options, storage and demand response technologies are modelled on a national energy systems level. With the case study area modelled in EnergyPLAN model, the goal of the research is to show how each flexibility option influences the economically feasible generation capacities of renewable energy sources, storage technologies and demand response in order to reach a certain share of renewable energy in final energy consumed. To follow the numerous possible configurations of the system, flexibility index for each option and a flexibility vector for each scenario are introduced. Results show which flexibility options play key role in important steps of energy transition to 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% RES energy system.
