AB - Geographical science on the territory of former Yugoslavia began to develop at the end of
the 19th century. In that period, the first geography departments and professional associations, as
well as geographical societies, were established at the leading university centers. At the beginning
of the 20th century, the first geographical journals were launched, among which the Bulletin of
the Serbian Geographical Society (1912) has the longest tradition. However, numerous historical
and political circumstances, primarily the First World War, stopped further progress in this field.
Nevertheless, the end of the Great War, apart from the creation of a single state (the Kingdom of
SCS), brought a new stage in the realization of teaching and scientific work. New tasks and roles
of geography required the exchange of experiences and international cooperation. As a first step in
that direction, the organization of the First Congress of the Slavic Geographers and Ethnographers
in Prague in 1924 stands out. After the death of Jovan Cvijić, three more Congresses were held
in Poland (1927), the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1930), and the Kingdom of Bulgaria (1936). All the
congresses, apart from their scientific value, also had socio-political significance expressed through
the support of the official authorities. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the participation and
discourse of the representatives of the scientific community from the Kingdom of SCS (Yugoslavia) in the circumstances of the interwar period. The results showed that in the scientific work, the emphasis was on physical-geographic, cartographic, and ethnological research. At the same time, demographic research, as well as geo(political) and economic-geographic topics (agricultural, industrial, etc.) stemming from Cvijić’s anthropogeographical school, were completely neglected. Despite numerous shortcomings, the mentioned meetings contributed to the unification of the scientific community and the promotion of geography in the Slavic countries. Also, they represented the starting point for new research and the organization of scientific work in the decades after the Second World War, both on the territory of Yugoslavia and in the wider international scientific community.

AB - Abstract:

For more than ten years in a row, archaeologists of the Institute for Balkan Studies of SASA of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, in cooperation with the Ausonius Institute from Bordeaux, have been conducting archaeological research on the Roman and Byzantine settlement located in the area of the village of Niševac near Svrljig, in the Svrljiški Timok River valley. It was the first station on the Roman itinerary road between Naissus (Niš) and Trajan’s colony of Ratiaria on the Danube (Archar in northwestern Bulgaria). In addition to significant architectural remains and various archaeological findings, some inscriptions in Latin and Greek are also known from this area. This bilingualism of the texts indicates the very location of Timacum Maius, which was located on a vital communication line and a linguistic and administrative interprovincial barrier. Although chronologically different, the epigraphic findings I report raise broader scientific questions about the significance of this ancient settlement and its population, especially in the early military history of the Naissus region.

AB - In this paper, we investigate the role of urban planning in providing social housing in Serbia. Social housing is essential in providing affordable and sustainable housing options for low-income individuals and families. In recent years, the issue of social housing has gained traction as cities around the world face rising housing prices and a growing number of individuals experiencing homelessness. Urban planning encompasses the design and development of cities and communities to create environments that are functional, sustainable, and conducive to quality of life. Through land use regulations, transportation planning, and infrastructure development, urban planning aims at creating neighborhoods that are well-connected, economically viable, and socially inclusive. Furthermore, the position of social housing within urban plans is critical in ensuring access to essential services and amenities. This paper explores the intersection between planning and construction laws and the contemporary notion of social housing. By analyzing the general plans of the major cities Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Sad, and Niš, we investigate the extent to which urban planning has influenced the provision of social housing in Serbia over the past twenty years.

Ottoman heritage in Serbia on a cultural route: students’ attitudes

AB - Cultural heritage is an important part of the cultural identity of any nation. The care of cultural heritage includes the protection and preservation of the material heritage of the majority nation and the heritage of all other ethnic communities that have left their cultural traces in the area under consideration. The protection of cultural heritage reflects the maturity of a society. That’s why the approach to the protection of cultural monuments should not be selective, narrow and strictly national, but comprehensive, preserving the cultural values of earlier eras and peoples as a general civilisational asset. The research aims to reveal how today’s youth perceive the Ottoman heritage in Serbia, their emotional relationship with it, and whether they recognise the Ottoman heritage as a possible resource for tourism in Serbia. The results indicate that the student population perceives the positive aspects of the Ottoman era in this region, as reflected in the legacy of Oriental culture and the multi-ethnic and multicultural order, to a large extent. Architectural heritage, gastronomy and intangible heritage (language and literature, legends, music, dances, traditions) are largely recognised as representative of the Ottoman cultural heritage and foreign influences on national culture. Their potential for tourism has also been recognised. However, the possible obstacles in the development process of the cultural route are foreseen in strong nationalism and negative collective memory, which were identified as key barriers.

abstract = "Cultural heritage is an important part of the cultural identity of any nation. However, the possible obstacles in the development process of the cultural route are foreseen in strong nationalism and negative collective memory, which were identified as key barriers.",

AB - This paper presents the work in progress on ELEXIS-SR corpus, the Serbian addition to the ELEXIS multilingual
annotated corpus (Martelli et al., 2023), comprising semantic annotations and word sense repositories. The ELEXIS
corpus has parallel annotations in ten European languages, serving as a cross-lingual benchmark for evaluating
low and medium-resourced European languages. The focus in this paper is on multiword expressions (MWEs) and
named entities (NEs), their recognition in the ELEXIS-SR sentence set, and comparison with annotations in other
languages. The first steps in building the Serbian sense inventory are discussed, and some results concerning
MWEs and NEs are analysed. Once completed, the ELEXIS-SR corpus will be the first sense annotated corpus
using the Serbian WordNet (SrpWN). Finally, ideas to represent MWE lexicon entries as Linguistic Linked-Open
Data (LLOD) and connect them with occurrences in the corpus are presented.

AB - Local markets have been a special setting throughout human history. Apart from their important social role, they had immeasurable economic importance as primary forms of exchange of goods (trade). Nonetheless, they experienced numerous transformational changes that affected their functioning. Like other countries, Serbia has a long tradition of market activity. However, several novelties have been introduced in recent years. Among many, the process of e-fiscalization is the main issue. Therefore, the focus of our research is based on a qualitative analysis of online media content (news and comments) related to the fiscalization of market activity. The attitudes of different categories of participants (state authorities, vendors, and customers) were analyzed. LIGRE open-access software was used for this purpose. The results of the analysis showed conflicting parties. Legislators emphasize the exclusive positive effects, while vendors point to the negative side of fiscalization. As a third party, customers (service users) have an undefined attitude in relation to fiscalization (pros/cons/neutral). There is an agreement to introduce market activity into legal flows. However, the key prerequisite is the prior resolution of a number of problems (working conditions, business costs, market monopoly, etc.).

AB - Tourism in Serbia has gone through different phases. Since its organized development, Zlatibor
stands out as one of the distinguished destinations. It has diversified tourist offer and makes more than 40% of total overnight stays in the category of mountain resorts in Serbia. In this paper, the tourism assessment is made based on several indicators: demographic, spatial, and touristic, and six indicators, which were further divided into two groups: indexes of tourism development level and indexes of turnover intensity. The analysis was conducted for the period 1979–2023. The results revealed that Zlatibor achieved an impressive level of tourism development. On the other hand, the main issue arising is the sustainability of development, which needs to be addressed in the future.

Illuminating Darkness Through Vacations

AB - Dark tourism is fascinating because it unifies cultural heritage, history, and travels with death. Travels usually refer to hedonism and relaxation, but this niche tourism brought to the stage new dimensions: death and morbidity. Knowing that death is one of the greatest human fears, the authors investigated the domestic tourists’ perceptions of dark tourism and its development in Serbia. The research was conducted using an online survey. The questionnaire included three units: 1) sociodemographic characteristics, 2) familiarity and understanding of the dark tourism phenomenon, and 3) motivation for engaging in dark tourism. The results revealed that domestic tourists support dark tourism development, mainly due to its educational role. Tourists marked the acquisition of new knowledge, curiosity, and compassion as the primary motivators. Therefore, the older male population particularly expressed a dominant positive attitude toward the development of dark tourism. Once again, the important role of the local community in tourism development is confirmed, especially in “sensitive” forms of alternative tourism. Finally, the research contributes significantly to the theoretical framework and provides valuable guidelines for the planning and further development of dark tourism in Serbia.

AB - The paper argues that vaccines could be viewed as artifacts which
communicate various social messages and are used as instruments for fulfilling
different sociopolitical goals besides meeting public health needs. It further
suggests that such social, cultural and political influences may have real effects on
the choices of vaccine technologies or vaccine production, and aims to demonstrate
their importance in the area which is normally seen as the domain of objective
science. This is demonstrated by using the example of the locally produced oral
polio vaccine (OPV) in Serbia during the socialist and post-socialist periods in the
country’s history.

AB - Imaging of biological processes are of the great importance for early diagnostic of diseases and for understanding the disease pathway in the human body [1]. In order to improve image contrast and resolution, different optical fluorescent probes, such as florescent dyes, fluorescent proteins and quantum dots, have been developed. However, their application is somewhat restricted by photobleaching, cell autofluorescence, and small tissue penetration depth [2]. Lanthanide doped up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) owing to their unique optical properties and high photochemical stability, represents a promising material for superior optical diagnostic and drug delivery systems [3]. Due to large anti-Stocks shift, UCNPs have converse excitation and emission profiles: under excitation by near-infrared light (NIR), they are able to emit visible or UV photons whit a shorter wavelength [4,5]. Hexagonal-phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals are the best NIR-to-visible up-converting materials to date, but YF3 phase due to its wider optical transmission window, and the minimization of the excited state quenching of doped ions, is considered to be promising material for application in biolabeling as well. In this work, biocompatible YF3:YbEr and GdF3:YbEr mesocrystals were prepared by one-pot solvothermal synthesis in the presence of chitosan, and are used successfully as biolabeling agents. The crystallinity and phase purity of the obtained powders were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction which revealed that both samples are with the orthorhombic Pnma crystal structure, and monophase. Homogeneous distribution of dopant ions in the host matrix was confirmed by STEM/EDS mapping (not shown). SEM and TEM analysis implied that particles possess morphology similar to the unshelled peanuts, which are built from smaller monocrystals (Figs 1a and b). It was shown that their capacity toward self-organization is determined by the amount of surface-preserved chitosan ligands, which presence is confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. Chitosan presence provides biocompatibility, thus the viability of both, MRC- 5 lung fibroblast, and A549 lung carcinoma cells was highly preserved (>80%), after 24 h of incubation with the synthetized samples (50μg mL-1). To monitor the intracellular uptake, cells incubated with particles were further analyzed by laser scanning microscopy under 980nm excitation. A strong up-conversion emission (green spots at Figs 1c and d), indicated that particles (green spots) are positioned in the cells cytoplasmic area adjacent to the plasma membrane, in both cell lines. Such positioning, without disturbing cells nuclei confirms their capacity to be used as NIR cell labeling agents.

AB - Owing to its high energy density and environmentally friendly properties, hydrogen is recognized as promising fuels in the future energy system. Among the various techniques for H2 production, electrochemical water splitting, concerning both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is established as an efficient one. However, the kinetics of electrocatalytic water splitting reaction is significantly slowed down by the large energy barriers of the two-electron transfer (HER) and four-electron-proton coupled reaction (OER) pathways. The sluggish kinetics of water splitting processes can be overcome by employing electrocatalysts. It has been shown that Pt-based electrocatalysts exhibit the best HER activity, while IrO2 and RuO2-based electrocatalysts demonstrate the best OER activity [1,2]. Though, scarcity of noble metals and high price hindered their commercial applications in water splitting. Hence, it is an imperative to replace noble metal-based catalysts or reduce their amount through combination with abundant materials. The aim of this study was to examine an influence of ZnO to RuO2 mass ratio in the ZnO/RuO2 composites on their structural properties in order to prepare commercially acceptable materials with an enhanced photo(electro)-catalytic activity for water splitting. Composites of ZnO and RuO2 with mass ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 10:1, named 1ZnO/1RuO2, 2ZnO/1RuO2, 10ZnO/1RuO2, respectively, were synthesized using the microwave processing. The structural investigations of the composites were completed using TEM/HRTEM and ADF/STEM analysis, including EDXS elemental mapping (FEI Talos F200X microscope operating at 200 kV, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, United States). The electrocatalytic (EC) activity of the prepared composites towards OER and HER was examined through linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) in both acidic (0.1 M H2SO4, pH ∼ 1) and alkaline (0.1 M NaOH, pH ∼ 13) electrolytes. An Ivium VertexOne potentiostat/galvanostat and a conventional three-electrode quartz cell setup, including a glassy carbon as the working electrode, a platinum foil as the counter electrode, and a saturated calomel electrode as the reference electrode, were used for the EC measurements. The working electrode, with a surface area of 0.3 cm2, was coated with a catalyst ink prepared by previously published procedure [3]. The results of TEM analysis, Figure 1 (a-c), show that 2ZnO/1RuO2 composite is consisted of the smallest particles which are uniform in size and shape, while the both decreases of ZnO content (in 1ZnO/1RuO2 composite) and its increases (in 10ZnO/1RuO2) provoke appearance of larger, irregularly shaped particles. Besides, EDXS elemental mapping reveals that 2ZnO/1RuO2 composite possesses particles with the most homogeneous distribution of all constituting elements, Figure 1 (d-f). Figure 2 shows LSV curves illustrating the HER/OER catalytic performance of ZnO/RuO2 composites in a (a) 0.1 M H2SO4, and (b) 0.1 M NaOH electrolyte solutions. Solid lines represent LSV results obtained under dark conditions while dashed lines represent LSV results obtained after 60 minutes of simulated solar-light illumination. As can be seen from Figure 2, the 2ZnO/1RuO2 composite demonstrated superior HER/OER photo(electro)-catalytic activity in both electrolytes. Comprehensive structural analysis completed with Raman, PL and UV-Vis DR spectra indicates that superior HER/OER photo(electro)-catalytic activity of the 2ZnO/1RuO2 composite can be attributed to an optimal amount of oxygen vacancies in its crystal structure and homogeneous distribution of all constituting elements in the particles.

AB - Rare-earth (RE)-based materials are particularly interesting since they possess exceptional optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. These materials consist of a host (matrix) that can be doped with RE ions, which therefore enhance the current properties of the material, and/or provide additional, such as luminescent emission in the visible spectrum. For example, RE-earth oxides, such as ARE2O4 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, and RE = trivalent rare-earth ions, have great perspectives for producing highly efficient luminescent materials. So far, SrGd2O4 has been a poorly investigated material, even though it has huge potential for many different applications since it possesses high thermal stability, good chemical durability and it is environmentally friendly. The morphology and structure of the obtained particles are mostly influenced by the synthesis methods used for preparing the material. In this work, we will present structural and optical characterization of new material composed of SrGd2O4 doped with Yb3+ and Ho3+, but also, co-doped with Bi3+ ions, prepared via combustion method with glycine as a fuel and citric acid as a chelator. Samples of SrGd2O4 were doped with different Yb3+ (2, 4, 6 at%) ions and constant Ho3+ (1 at%) and Bi3+ (2 at%) concentrations. All samples were heated in the furnace for 1.5 hours at 500 °C and then thermally treated for 2.5 hours at 1000 °C. The pure orthorhombic lattice of SrGd2O4, space group Pnma, was revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (JCPDS Card No.:01-072-6387). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) discovered agglomerated clusters of spherical particles measuring around 150 nm in size. The inclusion of Bi3+ ions into the structure influenced the morphology since the formation of larger grains was observed, with sizes reaching up to ~1.7 μm, showing fine packing of pyramidal-shaped nanoparticles. The uniform distribution of constitutive elements in the samples was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). (activator). A substantial decrease in the energy band gap value was detected using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS UV-Vis) for this sample. Luminescent properties were evaluated from photoluminescent emission spectra and intensity dependence on excitation power after excitation at 976 nm. Dominant green (550 nm), red (671 nm), and infrared (758 nm) 5F4, 5S2 → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, 5F4, 5S2 → 5I7 transition emissions, respectively, are detected in all samples. The sample co-doped with Bi3+ showed the most intense photoluminescent emission.

AB - As the Sun is the most abundant energy source available, solar cells can become the primary source of renewable energy. Today, one of the most promising candidates to achieve this goal is perovskite solar cells (PSC) since they are solution-processable with PCE (>25%) that surpass conventional Si photovoltaics. However, the commercial potential of PSCs is still mainly limited by the low stability of perovskite active/absorbing layer to the environmental stimuli. This is also an issue in the case of formamidinium lead iodide perovskite - CH(NH2)2PbI 3 (FAPbI3 or FAPI) which possesses several advantages to be an active layer of efficient PSC, in comparison to the counterpart methylammonium lead iodide- CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI). It has been shown that the humidity and oxygen from the atmosphere, heat, UV light and ion migration may have detrimental influences leading to the degradation of quality of material, and corollary performance and stability of the device. The reason for this vulnerability of perovskites is the complexity of the material itself, which is a multielement and multi-component hybrid material. To address the stability of perovskite thin films and the consequent performance of PSCs, various materials such as organic acids, metallic and organic halides, amines, organosulfur compounds, graphene, polymers, etc., have been proposed as additives or surface passivation agents. In this work, we opt for poly(ionic) (PILs) liquids additives, which are polyelectrolyte salts comprising cations and anions, with the cationic or anionic centers constrained to the repeating units in the polymer chain. PILs offer several advantages (even in comparison to their monomer counterparts), including high ionic conductivity, low vapor pressure, high hydrophobicity, excellent thermal and electrochemical stability, and a tunable chemical structure. Based on these qualities, PILs have found applications in various thin film electronic devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, capacitors, etc. Aforementioned aspects make them also suitable candidates for controlling the growth of perovskite crystals, passivating grain boundaries and surface defects, improving interfacial energetics, doping the perovskite and hole transport material, and overall enhancing the stability and efficiency of PSCs. Furthermore, PILs based on TFSI pendant anion have shown potential for preparing compact grains of perovskites in thin films with less pronounced grain boundaries, significantly reducing the J-V hysteresis index in PSCs [1]. Also, the use of TFSI-based PILs has demonstrated efficient passivation of defects at the surface of perovskite thin films, which greatly reduces interface recombination and consequently improves device efficiency and stability for different perovskite compositions and architectures [2]. Hence within this work, two poly(ionic) liquids based on polymerized anion bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide (TFSI) (with pendant cations Li+ and imidazolium, namely [PLiMTFSI] Li and [PLiMTFSI] [DCMim]) are used as additives along with the counterpart salt LiTFSI. As could be seen in Fig 1. where XPS data are presented, after addition of [PLiMTFSI] [DCMim] the greatest shift towards lower binding energy was observed which is subscribed to the strongest p-doping/interaction of/with perovskite thin film found in this case. Furthermore, from UV-Vis absorption and Photoluminescence spectra of pristine perovskite thin film and with additives presented in Fig. 2 can be inferred that the highest intensity was measured in both type of spectra in the case of perovskite film with additive [PLiMTFSI] [DCMim]. Here is expected that PIL most effectively passivates defects at the surface and grain boundaries of perovskite polycrystalline thin film, which is reflected in better quality of the thin film and corollary higher absorption. Indeed, in Fig. 3 can be observed that after addition of PIL additives (in contrast to LiTFSI) [PLiMTFSI] Li and especially [PLiMTFSI] [DCMim] into the perovskite thin film, crystallites of perovskite grow bigger and the thin film becomes more homogeneous and uniform.

AB - Diclofenac (DCF) is widely used anti-inflammatory drug, which due to its stability and poor degradation in water represents chemical contaminant that can cause negative effects on the environment. Considering the use of DCF in pharmacology and its negative impact on the environment, the development of sensitive, selective, cheap, and fast, analytical devices is recently in focus of environmental scientists and engineers. It has been shown that electrochemical sensors (ECS) have advantages over traditional analytical methods for detection and monitoring of chemical pollutants in water. Crucial performances of ECS: selectivity, sensitivity, response time and portability, can be improved by modification of bare electrodes. Until now different materials have been used for electrodes modification, among them are noble metals, metal oxides, polymers and variety of carbonaceous materials [1]. We synthesized and characterized zinc oxide particles to modify the glassy carbon electrodes and to test them as sensors for electrochemical detection of DCF. Zinc oxide particles were synthesized by a glycine-nitrate combustion process using 1 M aqueous solution of zinc-nitrate hexahydrate and glycine in the molar ratio 6:5. Precursor mixture was heated on a magnetic stirrer, at first up to 80 °C in order to release excess water, then heating was continued to 170 °C, with dwell time of 2 hours, until slow flameless combustion occurred. In addition, to prepare highly crystalline particles, the obtained amorphous powder was calcined in air atmosphere, at 400 and 500 °C for 4 hours; prepared samples were denoted as ZnO-400 and ZnO-500, due to the calcination temperature. To determine phase composition and purity the prepared samples were characterized by XRD, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, while field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was applied to determine particles morphology and size distribution. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) was applied for electrochemical quantification of DCF using a three-electrode system that included a glassy carbon electrode as the working electrode, a saturated calomel electrode (SCE) as the reference electrode, and Pt foil as the counter electrode. The ink was prepared by mixing 10 mg of prepared particles, ZnO-400 and ZnO-500, and 1.5 mg carbon black with 40 μL of 5 % Nafion solution, 225 μL ethanol, and 225 μL water. LSV is performed in 25 mL of phosphate buffer (0.1 M, pH 7.0) with the addition of diclofenac infusion solution (75 mg DCF / 3 mL, Galenika a.d.) in a portion of 1 μL to completely 12 μL. All measurements were done in a potential window of 0.2–1 V vs. SCE at a scan rate of 20 mV⋅s−1.

AB - The sources of the Dictionary of Serbo-Croatian Literary and Vernacular Language,
vol. 1–21 (the SASA Dictionary or Dictionary of the Serbian Academy) are
analyzed applying the method of statistical analysis. Its main aim was to provide a
clear idea of the frequency of relevant and particularly relevant sources in the text
of the dictionary as a whole (while also pointing to the problems and hindrances that
occur in the digital search of sources). This type of analysis was conducted using the
volumes 2, 10 and 17 (released in 1962, 1978, and 2006, respectively). The analysis
and total ratio of frequency in the volumes under examination demonstrates that the
sources can be divided into: a. The basic circle (top 10 dictionary sources); b. Broader
circle (top 100 sources); c. The broadest circle (top 500 sources). The analysis also
yielded the fact that basic sources comprise more important dictionaries as well as
collections of vernacular words, so that the circle of sources spreads further including
some other more relevant collections of words, prominent authors, signifi cant
periodicals, and so on. The analysis as projection basically identifi ed the sources upon
which the SASA Dictionary is actually based. Beyond this varied and broad circle
lie sources that more rarely, or hardly ever occur, as a testimony to the existence or
usage of certain lexical items in the corpus material of the Dictionary of the Serbian
Academy. The said indicators point the way to the further process of digitization of
the SASA Dictionary and its corpus material.

of the dictionary as a whole (while also pointing to the problems and hindrances that
occur in the digital search of sources).
Academy. The said indicators point the way to the further process of digitization of
the SASA Dictionary and its corpus material.",

AB - The subject of our work pertains to English-origin words noted in Jovan Grčić’s Dictionary of
Foreign Words, Phrases, and Proverbs from 1922. Considering the significant influence of the English language today on the lexicon not only of Serbian but of all languages it comes into contact with, especially in the realms of business, information communication, sports, popular culture, and more, we aim to establish the prevalence of anglicisms in one of the oldest dictionaries of foreign words (its first edition appeared in 1904 under the title „Dictionary of Foreign Words that Appear in Our Language, Which We Should Understand and, to Some Extent, Avoid”). Given the wide range of material covered by this dictionary and the methodological approaches that can characterize broad descriptive definitions, this work will focus on identifying noted anglicisms and analyzing their lexicographical explanation in the dictionary.

AB - In this paper, the application of the law banning the wearing of the veil as
an attempt to atheize a part of the Muslim population in the territory of the
Republic of Serbia in the mid-20th century. The Law on the Prohibition of
Wearing the Veil (Zar and Feredža) came into force in Serbia in 1951. Its implementation
involved discontinuing the use of clothing items that covered
women's heads and bodies. This law had far-reaching effects on the clothing
practises of Muslim women. The Gorani community represents one of the
Muslim (minority) communities in the Republic of Serbia, with its native territory
located in the region of Gora. Gora is the name of a mountainous area
that stretches between the peaks of the Šar Mountain, Koritnik and Korab
administratively includes the town of Dragaš and 18 rural settlements. According
to the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, the Gora region belongs
to the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija.
The implementation of the Law on the prohibition of wearing the veil
can be seen as an extremely radical move by the communist authorities in
the mid-20th century. It promoted two ideals of the socialist political system
– the emancipation of women and the realisation of gender equality. The
interpretation of the law and its implementation can vary depending on the
context of observation. According to studies by anthropologists, sociologists,
and religiologists, the application of this law represented a significant turning
point in the lives of many women, especially Muslim women. According
to Gorani recollections, the ban on veiling led to very traumatic experiences
for Gorani women. The law primarily disrupted the continuity of the centuries-
old tradition of wearing clothing items (headscarf and terlik) that
expressed the marital status of women within the Gorani community.
The paper assumes that the ban on women's veiling is not only a form
of restriction of religious freedoms but also a strategy to promote secular
political ideologies. The Law on prohibiting the wearing of the veil is analyzed not only as a ban on the application of traditional religious rules but
also in the context of the state-imposed processes of atheization in the local
community (the Gora region) in the second half of the 20th century.

The Anti-Cult Movement in Serbia at the Turn of the Millennium: Discourse, Contextualization, and Valorization of Attitudes towards New Religious Movements

AB - The anti-cult movement represents a collective of individuals and organizations
whose work is focused on opposing and deconstructing the activities
of new religious movements, sects, or cults. It is mainly found in the United
States, France and Russia, but such phenomena and practices are present
throughout Europe. Situated amidst significant concepts and processes such
as globalization and multiculturalism, secularization and resacralization,
consumer society and religious market, extreme secularism and religious
fundamentalism, the anti-cult movement emerges as a bearer of the paradigm
of the interrelationships between the individual, society, and state, as
well as politics, religion and culture that dominate the post-industrial world
we live in. On the other hand, by presenting itself as an opposition to the
new religious movements, their symbolic universes, their constructions of
reality and the ideas and beliefs that legitimize power relations, providing
a meaningful order and offering ultimate meaning to believers, the anti-cult
movement positions itself in a way that actually resembles and makes them
similar to the groups it opposes. Much like new religious movements, the
anti-cult movement satisfies a range of needs of its members and activists by
legitimizing actions, providing beliefs and hopes, interpreting experiences,
and offering comfort and meaningful answers. The contemporary anti-cult
movement in Serbia began to develop in the mid-1990s alongside the transformation
of society from a communist to a capitalist one, as an expression of
the crisis of national identity. In the process of society’s resacralization and
the rise of power of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the proselytism of new
religious movements was perceived as an attack on the religious-national
body of Serbian society, and an individual’s conversion was treated as an
act of betrayal and abandonment of the church to which they “belong”. In
this context, the anti-cult movement emerged as a collection of groups and
individuals that adopted the conventional practices of similar organizations worldwide in criticizing the work of new religious movements, as well as in
the procedures of “deprogramming” or “treating” converts. This presentation
is dedicated to presenting the discourse and practices of the anti-cult
movement in Serbia at the turn of the millennium, placing this action within
a broader cultural-political context and evaluating it in the light of contemporary
trends in Serbian society.

The Invisible Heroes of Greece

AB - This anthropological study deals with true heroes of our time, the Greek people: men, women and families that were all alerted and offered help, support, protection and love and welcomed children from war-zones of the former Yugoslavia. These were people who carried out the whole endeavor of giving hospitality to thousands of children and their contribution remained unknown. Although thirty years have passed since the beginning of this humanitarian endeavor, this selfless act is still little known to the general public, even to people dedicated to humanitarian studies.
During the collapse of Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) in the1990s, children were, as always, the major victims of the war. The long standing union of people coming from deferent ethnic and religious backgrounds was spectacurarly and tragically destroyed. At the same time some other ties were built and strengthened.
In the case of the Serbs, solidarity and help came directly by the Greek people and not a governmental policy a large part of Greek citizens did not limit themselves only to sending humanitarian aid, or support economically children by keeping the distance.
In addition to this they opened their homes to the Serbian children. Children that primarily were war orphans, children of refugees and the most economically vulnerable arrived to Greece through the territory of the former SFRY with the help of various institutions and organizations. The biggest contribution in various forms of aid was made by the Union of Municipalities and Local Communities of Greece, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Red Cross of Greece, the Red Cross of Yugoslavia (Serbia), the non-government and non-profit organization “Greek Aid Caravan”, the Women’s Association “Duga” (Rainbow), numerous associations of Greek-Serbian friendship, groups of citizens, individuals, etc.
The sources for writing this book are field material that I collected during many years of research, using the method of interviews and free conversations, as well as archival material from the Representative office of the Republic of Srpska in Greece based in Thessaloniki, from the Red Cross of Serbia, from the non-government and non-profit organization “Greek Aid Caravan”, articles from periodicals, Internet, and also photo and video material, which are of great importance in ethnological and anthropological research, and are available in this book via QR codes.
During this research, I dealt with the “memory of childhood” of adults who as children were taken care of by hundreds of Greek families, stayed in one of the summer camps or were economically adopted. Most of my interlocutors were born from the beginning of the eighties to the mid-nineties of the 20th century.
The research included 121 life stories, in Serbian and Greek, both of people who participated in the organization and implementation of the program, and of benefactors who hosted, cared for or economically adopted children or sent aid during the nineties and early 2000s, as well as those who stayed in one of these programs, received help as children, and now, after 20-30 years, they are adults and many have children of their own.
In analyzing collected narratives I tried to show how the contact between Serbian children and Greek hosts “marked” the life of both parties - the providers of various forms of aid, as well as the former children, and how they view their stay in Greek families now, from a distance of a couple of decades.
Conversations and interviews with individuals, who in their childhood received various forms of help from Greek people, weaved a dense narrative fabric of childhood memories, in which threads of Greek culture influence on their maturation and growing up are interwoven. During the research, I heard from a large number of interlocutors that “my childhood was not like the others”. They explain this by the fact that, on the one hand, they survived severe war traumas, the loss of one or both parents and close relatives or friends, the curse of being a refugee and in poverty, but on the other hand, later they felt, as they say, “an indescribable love”, thanks to the hospitality and the help that they had received from the Greek people.
In addition, all my interlocutors emphasized the importance of being given the opportunity to “peek into another culture”, to learn a foreign (Greek) language and to gain the experience of living in a different social environment. The children we are talking about here played a big role in essentially bringing adults together.
Balkans will always be a multicultural environment, they are mean to be, and whenever someone’s search for an excuse to overthrow it, the “unknown heroes” will be the guardians of our human civilization.

AB - This study addressed problems related to the protection, reconstruction, and revitalisation of modern heritage, particularly the regeneration of mass housing estates built after WWII and facing the contemporary perils of urban decay and deterioration. It presented interdisciplinary research investigating the possibility of extending and complementing the heritage assessment methodology and broadening the scope of the criteria by including mass housing landscape values. Starting with a close reading of the key theoretical positions embedded in the conceptualisation and construction of New Belgrade, we investigated a set of holistic and time-based criteria, followed by contemporary methodologies for landscape quality assessment. The investigation was based on an urban landscape approach to heritage assessment and focuses on the Central Zone of New Belgrade, declared a heritage site in 2021. The interaction of the theoretical underpinnings of modern architecture and urban planning with urban landscape discourse, coupled with historically and theoretically relevant knowledge and data, resulted in an investigation of landscape-based criteria for further mass housing assessment. Finally, we presented the findings of the landscape quality assessment of the transformations of the Central Zone. This perspective could be used to extend the possibilities of this approach in order to (1) tackle the “thickness” of temporality related to (urban) landscapes; (2) rethink and redefine the applied heritage assessment approach; (3) open the assessment procedure to a wider range of stakeholders, particularly nonexperts and the local community; and (4) re-actualise the position and role of experts in the sense of communicating knowledge in a completely new context.
