AB - Four samples containing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) of various sizes are prepared employing a simple low-temperature method of oxidative precipitation from FeCl2∙4H2O-NaOH-NaNO3 aqueous solution. For the preparation of two samples, the usual oxidation-precipitation synthesis protocol is modified by using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelating agent as a stabilizer of the Fe2+ ions in a solution, which results in the partial capping of the prepared MIONs with EDTA molecules. Three out of four samples are subjected to citric acid (CA) functionalization in the post synthesis protocol. Structural and magnetic properties of the synthesized MIONs are assessed using various experimental techniques (XRD, TEM, Fourier transform infrared, dynamic light scattering, Mössbauer, and SQUID). The average size of spherical-like MIONs is tuned from 7 nm to 38 nm by changing the synthesis protocol. Their room temperature saturation magnetization, M s, is in the range of 43 to 91 emu g−1. Magnetic heating ability, expressed via specific absorption rate value, which ranges from 139 to 390 W/gFe, is discussed in relation to their structural and magnetic properties and the possible energy dissipation mechanisms involved. The best heating performance is exhibited by the sample decorated with EDTA and with a bimodal size distribution with average particle sizes of 14 and 37 nm and M s = 87 emu g−1. Though this sample contains particles prone to form aggregates, capping with EDTA provides good colloidal stability of this sample, thus preserving the magnetic heating ability. It is demonstrated that two samples, consisting of 7 nm-sized CA- or 14 nm-sized EDTA/CA-functionalized superparamagnetic MIONs, with a similar hydrodynamic radius, heat in a very similar way in the relatively fast oscillating alternating current magnetic field, f = 577 kHz.

AB - Transcutaneous (non-invasive) functional electrical stimulation (FES) activates the ascending and descending neural pathways in persons with diminished sensory and motor control after a central nervous system (CNS) disease or injury. Application of FES in early phases of rehabilitation (acute and sub-acute) has a carry-over effect in decreasing motor impairment. FES is applied to the peripheral nervous system to activate the nerves and muscles, generate functional movements, and activate efferent and afferent neural pathways to close the biological motor-sensory loop. This promotes brain plasticity, the most important mechanism in rehabilitation after brain injuries. In the case of Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI), the functional recovery is less pronounced; however, the influence on the reduction of secondary complications of paralysis (e.g., loss of muscle bulk and strength, pressure sores, cardio-vascular deterioration, diminished gastric and urinary functioning, spasticity, reduced range of movement in joints, etc.) is pronounced. The most common applications of non-invasive FES are the restoration of standing and walking, the generation of cyclic movements for pedaling or rowing, and manipulation and grasping.

AB - The study examines the model of the establishment of a Serbian political, spiritual and scriptural center in Serres during three decades of Serbian rule (1345–1371). The model is considered against two circumstances: historical – the anathema of the Serbian ruler, patriarch and archbishops, and geographical – the proximity of Serres to Mount Athos and the Bulgarian Empire. There are three important focuses of the work: the Four Gospels of Metropolitan Jacob, the books donated to the Sinai monks and the activity of monk Isai in the circle of secular and ecclesiastical aristocracy in Serres. By pointing out certain characteristics of the book of Metropolitan Jacob, the unique program of the Serbian ruler and the Serbian church is sketched. Although exceptional individuals dedicated to literature stayed in Serres, the connection with the scriptoria on Mount Athos and those in the central part of the Serbian Empire raises the question to what extent we can speak of the existence of a developed Slavic scriptorium in Serres.

AB - In 1956, the Institute of Archaeology and the National Museum in Belgrade
carried out excavations at the site of Supska, near Ćuprija, in Central Serbia. Based on
the material culture findings, the site is mostly known as a Late Neolithic one; however, archaeological findings from other periods were discovered too. In the 1956 excavations, the cultural layers, and archaeological features with the Vinča culture archaeological materials were examined, as well as one grave, marked as Grave 1. The results of this excavation have been previously published in one monograph; however, an anthropological analysis of the individual found in Grave 1 has not been conducted before. In this paper, we present the results of contextual, bioanthropological, stable isotopes and C14 analyses of human skeletal remains found in Grave 1. The results showed that a young adult, who had experienced nonspecific metabolic stress during childhood, as evidenced by traces of linear enamel hypoplasia and porotic hyperostosis, was buried in this grave. AMS date revealed that this individual lived between 1280–1390 cal. AD, while the results of the stable isotope analyses suggested that it had mixed diet
based on C4 plants (such as millet) and/or C3 plants, with larger amounts of animal
protein, possible deriving from freshwater fish.

carried out excavations at the site of Supska, near Ćuprija, in Central Serbia. Based on
the material culture findings, the site is mostly known as a Late Neolithic one; however, archaeological findings from other periods were discovered too. AD, while the results of the stable isotope analyses suggested that it had mixed diet
based on C4 plants (such as millet) and/or C3 plants, with larger amounts of animal
protein, possible deriving from freshwater fish.",

AB - In this paper we present the results of preliminary research into children’s
birthday celebrations in public green spaces in Belgrade during the second
decade of the 21st century. This period is characterized by the widespread
practice of celebrating children’s birthdays in commercial children’s playrooms.
Birthday celebrations “in nature” were very rare in comparison. Thus we
decided to focus on birthday celebrations held in public green spaces. This
social practice is analyzed in the context of utilizing urban public space, public
greens for organizing private events with the intent to consider the reasons for
its appearance at a time when children’s birthdays were becoming part of the
processes of the institutionalization and commercialization of childhood. The
analysis is based on empirical material gathered through informal conversations
with parents who organized birthday parties “in the open”, “in nature”. Children’s
birthday parties we attended were organized at the Sava quay, in Košutnjak and
at Ada Ciganlija. The fieldwork was conducted periodically from 2014 to 2018,
and entailed the application of classical fieldwork methods in ethnology and

The Motif of the “Lost Paradise” in Blockbuster Films Set in the Post-Apocalypse

AB - Considering that mythology and storytelling are an integral part of the human
experience, in this paper we will take a look at contemporary iterations of
certain archetypal myths. While the authors do not espouse the idea that
“science fiction is the mythology of modern society”, we believe that there
is something to be said about popular culture as a medium of narrative
transmission in post-industrialist society. In this sense, the paper analyses
the utilization of origin myths in post-apocalyptic science fiction movies:
Waterworld (1995), The Matrix franchise (four installments 1999–2021),
Wall-E (2008), the Mad Max franchise (four installments 1979–2015), among
others. Common to all of these narratives is that they are set after a global
catastrophe that frames the “Earth before” as a paradise that was lost due to
human agency. Some of these narratives also feature a search for the remnants
of that lost world (most notably Waterworld and Mad Max: Fury Road), as
well as “lesser” origin myths that pertain to groups of survivors themselves (e.g. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome). In the context of current debates on
the Anthropocene, an era rapidly leading towards a global catastrophe, and
following Donna Haraway’s work on storytelling, we believe that the act of
telling these stories, and the ways in which they are told is of vital importance
if we, as a species, are to survive. Furthermore, post-apocalyptic science fiction
offers not only a warning but also possible outcomes exemplified through
new, emerging and different naturecultures. These naturecultures range from
the emergence of new and better adept bodies of a minority (which triggers
stigma), to bodies which are increasingly dependent on other actants, e.g., AI.
We argue that within the genre of science fiction these novel postapocalyptic
naturecultures are framed as imperfect, and that such framing strengthens
the myth of Earth before the apocalypse as a lost paradise. Consequently,
posthumanist bodies are seen in a Biblical manner as bodies “after the Fall”,
rather than as bodies which have not only the potential to survive but also to
prevent the catastrophe.
Waterworld
Fury Road),
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome).

author = "Žakula, Sonja and Matić, Uroš",

abstract = "Considering that mythology and storytelling are an integral part of the human
experience, in this paper we will take a look at contemporary iterations of
certain archetypal myths.

AB - This paper examines the way in which the character of Dobrila Smiljanić was
presented in the media discourse of socialist Yugoslavia. She was a fashion
designer who, using motifs from the traditional thesaurus, created the fashion
brand Sirogojno style, recognizable on the national and international markets
during the second half of the 20th century. The work aims to: 1) recognize and
distinguish fabricated media images of Dobrila Smiljanić; 2) point to the degree of
harmonization of those (and such) media representations of the fashion designer
with the official socialist idea of women and “female nature”, and 3) discuss, in
the context of socialist ideology, the manifest and latent role of the messages
that were thus sent to the Yugoslav readers’ audience. In a methodological
sense, the paper relies on the data obtained from the analysis of textual and
visual messages in the highly circulated Yugoslav women’s magazine “Bazar”
during the 1970s (issues no. 129–389), as well as the data obtained from a semistructured interview conducted in 2014 with fashion designer Dobrila Smiljan

AB - The paper represents some of the results of research into the
influence of the media on creating cultural representations about the Goranci
community, their culture and tradition. One of the often-displayed cultural elements
is confectionery which can be viewed from multiple angles. Another element of
culture is viewed in parallel – traditional wrestling (the wrestlers are called pelivani).
It is a sporting activity practiced within the Goranci community for a long period of
time and is considered Ottoman heritage in Gora.
The research was conducted during 2022 and entailed reading and analysis of
newspaper articles, and the contents of websites set up by members of the Goranci
community, as well as keeping up with television documentaries filmed at the
beginning of the 21st century. The objects of study were newspaper articles that were
also published online as well as those that were available only in print, and were
written in the early 21st century. The research did not focus on attitudes, but on social
conceptions of the culture and tradition of Goranci people in the Republic of Serbia.
The anthropological analysis is geared toward media content and media discourses
with the intent of understanding their influence on creating cultural representations
about the specifics of contemporary Goranci culture and tradition.

beginning of the 21st century. The objects of study were newspaper articles that were
also published online as well as those that were available only in print, and were
written in the early 21st century. The research did not focus on attitudes, but on social
conceptions of the culture and tradition of Goranci people in the Republic of Serbia.
The anthropological analysis is geared toward media content and media discourses
with the intent of understanding their influence on creating cultural representations
about the specifics of contemporary Goranci culture and tradition.",

AB - As a product of modernity, the railway is a mobility (infra)structure shaped by the ideology of progress, coordination, and certainty (Beaumont and Freeman 2007). In this presentation, we ask how this structure works in the context of uncertainty. We are interested in the interactions of prolonged and repeated situations of uncertainty related to the clandestine or irregularized migration, on the one side, with the railway, on the other. Our main question is how railways are utilized for both containing and enabling mobilities towards the European Union. Based on the long-term ethnographic research along the Balkan migratory trail, we discuss how railways are used by clandestine migrants for facilitating movement, as leads and resting infrastructures, and how they are used by state authorities to hinder and revert this movement, as (mobile) detentions and paths backward. We examine the relation of railway-use associated tragic events and border deaths in the context of irregularized migration with changes in migration practices and discourses. The use of railway to prevent the unwanted movement toward the EU resulted in physical changes of railway infrastructures. We investigate how the usages of active/abandoned railways inform and reshape everyday geographies of movement along the route, intercity mobility and life on the EU administrative border.
By focusing on the entanglements of railway and irregularized migration, this presentation seeks to illustrate how uncertainty operates on the move, unpacking the way train infrastructure spatially interfaces mobile bodies with the potentials and foreclosures of crossing borders, contributing to the non-linear understanding of migration.

Encampment in Europe in a comparative perspective

AB - This panel offers a comparative ethnographic and historical perspective on processes of encampment in Europe and on
refugee camps as spaces run by complex and ambiguous interweaving of humanitarian and security logics. It approaches
encampment as a specific architectural-political form of managing displacement that became possible with the
establishing of the nation-state system. With the growth of the humanitarian industry and its ‘mobile sovereignty’ (Pandolfi
2003), refugee camp was dispersed globally as a preferred model of managing displacement.
The panel contributions could address one of the following key aspects:
1) the complex and shifting securitarian-humanitarian logics of governance that are reflected in the management of
displacement through encampment;
2) how camps as infrastructures of immobilization, control and care change over time;
3) everyday life and encampment;
4) shifting logics of racialization and how they shape processes of encampment;
5) camps as places of resistance to racialisation and humanitarian-securitarian governance.
We invite papers that explore (in)visibility and (un)knowability of the management of European borders by empirically
focusing on diverse process of encampment in European member states, as well as those looking at the processes of
offshoring encampment from the EU to the countries in the Mediterranean, alongside the Balkan Route, in Africa etc.

COVID-19 Responses and the European Border Regime in Croatia and Serbia: Spectacularizing Borders and Sovereignties

AB - This article focuses on multiple bordering practices introduced in the context of the initial COVID-19 responses in Croatia and Serbia. These practices, often focused on the imposition of mobility control, were differently framed, executed and challenged in these two contexts and demonstrated a long-term restructuring of the European border regime at the gates of the EU. The paper outlines and contextualizes constant interplay and mutual stimulation of movement suppression and movement resilience in response to the new virus, blurring and sharpening borders, as seen from these two states at the political and geographical peripheries of Europe. Croatia and Serbia employed spectacularization and invisibilization of movement control, which steadily fostered the further compartmentalization of the population in both countries but with notable differences, especially regarding the control over unwanted migration toward the EU. In the period under discussion, borders were activated, imposed and challenged, exposing the changeability of relations between the EU border regime and the sovereign-nation states which comprise it. Different positions of Serbia and Croatia in the EU border regime also led to differences with regard to movement control, bordering, encampment and the repression exhibited toward people on the move. Old and new typologies of movement repression were tested and employed within the COVID-19 crisis framework, resulting in the further compartmentalization of societies and exclusions.
