Integer codes correcting single asymmetric errors

AB  - This paper presents a class of integer codes capable of correcting single asymmetric errors. The presented codes are defined over the ring of integers modulo 2b– 1 and are constructed with the help of a computer. The results of an exhaustive search have shown that, for practical lengths up to 4096 bits, the proposed codes use the same number of check bits as the best systematic single asymmetric error-correcting codes (SAECCs). Besides this, it is found that for some lengths the presented codes are perfect. Finally, the paper shows that the encoding/decoding complexity of the proposed codes is notably lower than that of the best systematic SAECCs.

AB  - Sodium ion batteries (SIB) present one of the most perspective post lithium technology and their progress strongly depends on the development of compounds having the structure which enables fast sodium insertion/deinsertion reactions. Polyanion compounds have been widely investigated as cathode materials for SIBs where they compete effectively to the usually used layered oxides. This survey is focused on the development of specific family of isostructural polyanion phases encompassed by the common chemical formula Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7). The comprehensive retrospective of their synthesis procedures, the kinetics and mechanism of sodiation/desodiation reactions, based on both experimental and theoretical results, is provided. First, the review summarizes the structural properties of variety of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds in terms of its electrical, vibrational and surface properties. Then, the synthesis methods and sodium/lithium storage performance, of each type of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds, are chronologically presented and discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these mixed polyanion cathodes are outlined, with the aim to explain some discrepancies and unclarified issues encountered in the literature. Besides, this survey will make room for future development. It can be very useful for the future design of high-performance mixed polyanionic compounds as cathodes for alkaline-ion rechargeable batteries.

Thermogravimetric insight in the reduction of xCuO – (1-x)MoO3 oxide system (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.9) by hydrogen

AB  - The oxide mixtures xCuO-(1-x) MoO3 were synthesized by gel-combustion procedure. The existence of phase mixture CuO + Cu3Mo2O9 and MoO3 + CuMoO4 in CuO-rich and MoO3 -rich composition region, respectively, were evidenced. The constant heating rate thermogravimetry in hydrogen atmosphere revealed that the reduction reactions proceed within the two clearly separated temperature regions. On the basis of mass changes, the mechanism of reduction processes was discussed. The measurements revealed considerable inhibition of CuO reduction by MoO3, and huge acceleration of MoO3 → MoO2 reduction step by copper. The particularities found in this system were commented in relation to our similar studies in NiO-MoO3 and CuO-WO3 systems. For particular composition, x = 0.5, existing preferably in form of a-CuMoO4, kinetic parameters of reduction were determined. The composition of oxide mixture influenced the particle size and morphology of resulting metallic Cu-Mo composites.

PVDF-HFP/NKBT composite dielectrics: Perovskite particles induce the appearance of an additional dielectric relaxation process in ferroelectric polymer matrix

AB  - Na0.25K0.25Bi0.5TiO3 (NKBT) perovskite particles are synthesized by solid-state method and used as a filler for polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) co-polymer. X-ray diffraction analysis of NKBT powders shows that the particles have a rhombohedral perovskite crystal structure (R3c symmetry). Raman spectroscopy reveals that the co-polymer crystallizes predominantly into the mixture of polar β- and γ-crystals, while there is also a contribution of the non-polar α-crystal phase. The introduction of the NKBT into the PVDF-HFP results with an increase in effective dielectric permittivity and this effect depends on the inorganic content in the composite. The most interesting result of the present study is that the introduction of NKBT particles induces the appearance of an additional transition peak in the dielectric spectra of the co-polymer matrix. At the fixed frequency of ~2 kHz, the observed process appears at ~10 °C (about 45° above the glass transition temperature) and its magnitude strongly depends on the amount of the NKBT in the composite. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz.

Dielectric spectroscopy measurements of the composites are carried out in the wide range of frequencies (from 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz) and temperatures (from −100 to 100 °C). They reveal that the novel process can be clearly distinguished in the frequency range between 160 Hz and ~50 kHz.",

The Impact of Contemporary Politically Induced Security Crisis on Tourist Behaviour: The perception of the Serbian Younger Adult Population

AB  - The study examines how tourists perceive the security crisis in the MENA region and to what extent it affects their travel decision process. It is based on a survey conducted among Serbian young adult and younger middle-aged residents. The survey tracked the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, their travel habits and attitudes towards the security situation in the Mediterranean. The research shows that the target population is well-aware of the current security situation. The non-parametric statistical tests conducted reveal differences by gender in risk perception. Even though a relocation of tourism demand in Serbia has occurred because of the security crisis, the study findings indicate that the security situation is not a decisive factor in destination selection.
AB  - La investigación tiene por objetivo determinar cómo los turistas perciben la crisis de seguridad en la región MENA y en qué medida afecta al proceso de decisión de viaje. Se realizó entre los residentes jóvenes y de mediana edad serbios. La encuesta hizo un seguimiento de las características demográficas y socioeconómicas de los encuestados, sus hábitos de viaje y actitudes hacia la situación de seguridad en el Mediterráneo. El público objetivo es muy consciente de la situación de seguridad. Las pruebas estadísticas no paramétricas revelaron las diferencias de género en la percepción del riesgo. Побројани слојеви главне теме су коментарисани с обзиром на шири  контекст друштвених и културних прилика, статус музичке културе  и просвете међу Србима, али и шире, посебно на улогу музике у процесима развоја националне идеје у другој половини 19. и почетком 20. 
века. Посредно је осветљен допринос Лазе Костића разумевању и уздизању статуса музике као топоса у књижевности српског романтизма.

Argon/dust and pure argon pulsed plasmas explored using a spatially-averaged model

AB  - The properties (densities of electrons and metastable argon atoms, effective electron temperature and dust charge) of argon/dust and pure argon pulsed plasmas are studied using a spatially-averaged model. The calculated time-dependencies for the densities of electrons and metastable atoms are compared with the experimental measurements and are found to be in a good qualitative agreement. It is analyzed how the plasma properties depend on the shape of the electron energy probability function (EEPF), the pulsing frequency and the duty cycle for both dust-free and dusty plasma. The analysis reveals that the agreement between theory and experiment is better with Druyvesteyn EEPF than the Maxwellian EEPF. Further, the variation in the pulsing frequency νp differently affects the metastable density nm in a dust-free and in a dusty plasma. For large νp, the metastable density in the dust-free pulsed plasma is larger than in the continuous-wave (CW) discharge, while the opposite is obtained in the presence of dust particles. This difference probably arises because of faster variation in the effective electron temperature in the dusty plasma due to collection of electrons by dust particles. Our calculations also show that dust particles may affect the behavior of electron density in the beginning of the on-period due to an enhancement in electron collection by dust particles.

AB  - Although selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have gained attention in the scientific community mostly through investigation of their anticancer activity, a great potential of this nanomaterial was recognized recently regarding its antimicrobial activity. The particle form, size, and surface chemistry have been recognized as crucial parameters determining the interaction of nanomaterials with biological entities. Furthermore, considering a narrow boundary between beneficial and toxic effects for selenium per se, it is clear that investigations of biomedical applications of SeNPs are very demanding and must be done with great precautions. The goal of this work is to evaluate the effects of SeNPs surface chemistry and structure on antimicrobial activity against several common bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), and Kocuria rhizophila (ATCC 9341), as well as Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739), Salmonella Abony (NCTC 6017), Klebsiella pneumoniae (NCIMB 9111) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027), and the standard yeast strain Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). Three types of SeNPs were synthesized by chemical reduction approach using different stabilizers and reducing agents: (i) bovine serum albumin (BSA) + ascorbic acid, (ii) chitosan + ascorbic acid, and (iii) with glucose. A thorough physicochemical characterization of the obtained SeNPs was performed to determine the effects of varying synthesis parameters on their morphology, size, structure, and surface chemistry. All SeNPs were amorphous, with spherical morphology and size in the range 70–300 nm. However, the SeNPs obtained under different synthesis conditions, i.e. by using different stabilizers as well as reducing agents, exhibited different antimicrobial activity as well as cytotoxicity which are crucial for their applications. In this paper, the antimicrobial screening of the selected systems is presented, which was determined by the broth microdilution method, and inhibitory influence on the production of monomicrobial and dual-species biofilm was evaluated. The potential mechanism of action of different systems is proposed. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of SeNPs was examined on the MRC-5 cell line, in the same concentration interval as for antimicrobial testing. It was shown that formulation SeNPs-BSA expressed a significantly lower cytotoxic effect than the other two formulations.

Polyanion compounds have been widely investigated as cathode materials for SIBs where they compete effectively to the usually used layered oxides. This survey is focused on the development of specific family of isostructural polyanion phases encompassed by the common chemical formula Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7). The comprehensive retrospective of their synthesis procedures, the kinetics and mechanism of sodiation/desodiation reactions, based on both experimental and theoretical results, is provided. First, the review summarizes the structural properties of variety of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds in terms of its electrical, vibrational and surface properties. Then, the synthesis methods and sodium/lithium storage performance, of each type of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds, are chronologically presented and discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these mixed polyanion cathodes are outlined, with the aim to explain some discrepancies and unclarified issues encountered in the literature. Besides, this survey will make room for future development. It can be very useful for the future design of high-performance mixed polyanionic compounds as cathodes for alkaline-ion rechargeable batteries.

AB  - Sodium ion batteries (SIB) present one of the most perspective post lithium technology and their progress strongly depends on the development of compounds having the structure which enables fast sodium insertion/deinsertion reactions. Polyanion compounds have been widely investigated as cathode materials for SIBs where they compete effectively to the usually used layered oxides. This survey is focused on the development of specific family of isostructural polyanion phases encompassed by the common chemical formula Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7). The comprehensive retrospective of their synthesis procedures, the kinetics and mechanism of sodiation/desodiation reactions, based on both experimental and theoretical results, is provided. First, the review summarizes the structural properties of variety of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds in terms of its electrical, vibrational and surface properties. Then, the synthesis methods and sodium/lithium storage performance, of each type of Na4M3(PO4)2(P2O7) compounds, are chronologically presented and discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of these mixed polyanion cathodes are outlined, with the aim to explain some discrepancies and unclarified issues encountered in the literature. Besides, this survey will make room for future development. It can be very useful for the future design of high-performance mixed polyanionic compounds as cathodes for alkaline-ion rechargeable batteries.

The obtained powders have reduced crystallinity and significant microstructural characteristics: low crystallite size and notable microstrain. They exhibit stable electrochemical performances in both aqueous and organic electrolyte. The broadening of existing peaks in cyclic voltammetry and/or the emergence of new broad peaks was attributed to the presence of the amorphous phase in the samples. In galvanostatic charge–discharge tests, the materials provided high capacities at low current densities, while the highest rate performance was demonstrated by olivine-phosphate when compared to the other two materials.

AB  - In order to improve the interpretation of measurement results and to achieve the optimal performance of microfluidic biosensors, advanced mathematical models of their time response and noise are needed. The random nature of adsorption–desorption and mass transfer (MT) processes that generate the sensor response makes the sensor output signal inherently stochastic and necessitates the use of a stochastic approach in sensor response analysis. We present a stochastic model of the sensor time response, which takes into account the coupling of adsorption–desorption and MT processes. It is used for the analysis of response kinetics and ultimate noise performance of protein biosensors. We show that slow MT not only decelerates the response kinetics, but also increases the noise and decreases the sensor’s maximal achievable signal-to-noise ratio, thus degrading the ultimate sensor performance, including the minimal detectable/quantifiable analyte concentration. The results illustrate the significance of the presented model for the correct interpretation of measurement data, for the estimation of sensors’ noise performance metrics important for reliable analyte detection/quantification, as well as for sensor optimization in terms of the lower detection/quantification limit. They are also incentives for the further investigation of the MT influence in nanoscale sensors, as a possible cause of false-negative results in analyte detection experiments.

AB  - Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is a material of high interest for dentistry, orthopedics, and other biomedical sectors. Being intrinsically metastable, the process of transformation of ACP into a crystalline phase upon heating is of high relevance for the development of innovative bioceramics. Here we have first studied the thermal behavior of a citrate-stabilized ACP (Cit-ACP) also doped with fluoride ions (Cit-FACP) prepared at three different nominal Cit/Ca ratios (i.e. 4, 2, 1) by differential thermal analysis. Next, the physico-chemical features of the crystalline products as well as the in vitro cell response to the materials were investigated. A citrate and fluoride free ACP sample was also tested as the blank. We have found that the activation energy of crystallization of Cit-(F)ACP samples is lower in comparison to the blank ACP and this is influenced by the nominal Cit/Ca molar ratio. Interestingly, we have discovered that the thermal treatment of Cit-(F)ACP at 800 °C yields hydroxyapatite (HA) or fluorapatite (FHA) as the main products differently from blank ACP that, like most of the ACPs reported in the literature, yields β-tricalcium phosphate. This was attributed to the Ca/P ratio of Cit-(F)ACP, which is similar to HA. A study of the crystalline products has revealed that all the (F)HA samples were non-cytotoxic, and retained carbonate ions in the crystal structure despite the heat treatment that should have induced decarbonation. The morphology of the products is influenced by the nominal Cit/Ca ratio and the presence of fluoride, ranging from spherical nanoparticles to micrometric hexagonal rods. Overall, our results prove that the thermal crystallization of Cit-(F)ACP is markedly different from classic ACP based materials and the thermal treatment of Cit-(F)ACP represents an attractive route for producing pure bioactive HA ceramics.

Interestingly, we have discovered that the thermal treatment of Cit-(F)ACP at 800 °C yields hydroxyapatite (HA) or fluorapatite (FHA) as the main products differently from blank ACP that, like most of the ACPs reported in the literature, yields β-tricalcium phosphate. This was attributed to the Ca/P ratio of Cit-(F)ACP, which is similar to HA. A study of the crystalline products has revealed that all the (F)HA samples were non-cytotoxic, and retained carbonate ions in the crystal structure despite the heat treatment that should have induced decarbonation. The morphology of the products is influenced by the nominal Cit/Ca ratio and the presence of fluoride, ranging from spherical nanoparticles to micrometric hexagonal rods. Overall, our results prove that the thermal crystallization of Cit-(F)ACP is markedly different from classic ACP based materials and the thermal treatment of Cit-(F)ACP represents an attractive route for producing pure bioactive HA ceramics.",

AB  - Over the past decades, development of engineering sciences has vastly contributed to advancements in medicine by production of numerous devices for diagnostics and treatment. In the middle of the 20th century, a new scientific field, biomedical engineering (BE), was established, which has developed into an extremely complex scientific discipline requiring a distinctive educational profile. Various study programs in BE have been established at universities around the world but also at several universities in Serbia. Also, intensive research in this field is performed at several scientific institutions in Serbia. In the present paper, short summaries of the research results of several groups of engineers and medical doctors are presented as an illustration of the wide field of BE research and possibilities of its application in diagnosis and therapy of various diseases.

AB  - Goat cheeses from high heat treated milk (HHTM: 80 °C/5 min (E1) and 90 °C/5 min (E2)), could be regarded as new products, compared to their analogues made from commonly pasteurized milk (65 °C/30 min (C)). Descriptive analysis and consumer tests with a hedonic scale and JAR scale were part of the product development process. The use of scanning electron microscopy enabled deeper insight into the flavor and texture of the cheeses. In all cheese variants, goaty flavor was mildly pronounced. Young HHTM cheeses also had a pronounced whey and cooked/milky flavor. Consumers found such flavor ‘too intensive’. Unlike the control variant, HHTM cheeses were not described as ‘too hard’. Such improvement in texture was found to be a result of fine, highly branched microstructure, sustained over the course of ripening time and highly incorporated milk fat globules inside the cheese mass. Cluster analysis showed that the largest group of consumers (47.5%) preferred E2 cheese. Although consumers found that most of the cheeses were ‘too salty’, this excess did not decrease their overall acceptance. Neither microstructure analysis nor descriptive sensory analysis of goat white brined cheeses produced from high heat treated milk has been done before.

AB  - Electrochemical and structural properties of LiV2O5 cathode were investigated. Obtained by solid state reaction at high temperature the material crystallized as gamma polymorph phase, γ-LiV2O5. The gamma structure provides two crystallographic sites to accommodate lithium ions, Li1 and Li2 position. Lithium insertion at these two sites occurs at two respective voltages versus lithium metal: ~3.6 V (Li1) and ~2.4 V (Li2). Intercalation at Li1 position is reversible in both organic and aqueous electrolyte and provides stable cycling performance at the high voltage. On the contrary, sluggish insertion/removal of Li+ at Li2 sites causes unstable performance and significant storage capacity fade at lower voltages. Lithium diffusion 3d landscape was determined by bond valence calculations applied on the γ-LiV2O5 phase, as well as on the metastable phases of γ′-V2O5 and ζ-Li2V2O5 that exist at high and low voltages respectively. The model was proposed based on inactivity of Li2 position of the metastable ζ-Li2V2O5 phase which provides explanation for the observed storage capacity loss at low voltages.

AB  - Materials science is highly significant in space program investigation, energy production and others. Therefore, designing, improving and predicting advanced material properties is a crucial necessity. The high temperature creep and corrosion resistance of Ni-based superalloys makes them important materials for turbine blades in aircraft engines and land-based power plants. The investment casting process of turbine blades is costly and time consuming, which makes process simulations a necessity. These simulations require fundamental models for the microstructure formation. In this paper, we present advanced analytical techniques in describing the microstructures obtained experimentally and analyzed on different sample’s cross-sectional images. The samples have been processed on board the International Space Station using the MSL-EML device based on electromagnetic levitation principles. We applied several aspects of fractal analysis and obtained important results regarding fractals and Hausdorff dimensions related to the surface and structural characteristics of CMSX-10 samples. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Zeiss LEO 1550, we analyzed the microstructure of samples solidified in space and successfully performed the fractal reconstruction of the sample’s morphology. We extended the fractal analysis on the microscopic images based on samples solidified on earth and established new frontiers on the advanced structures prediction.

The samples have been processed on board the International Space Station using the MSL-EML device based on electromagnetic levitation principles. We applied several aspects of fractal analysis and obtained important results regarding fractals and Hausdorff dimensions related to the surface and structural characteristics of CMSX-10 samples. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Zeiss LEO 1550, we analyzed the microstructure of samples solidified in space and successfully performed the fractal reconstruction of the sample’s morphology. We extended the fractal analysis on the microscopic images based on samples solidified on earth and established new frontiers on the advanced structures prediction.",

AB  - Recent European Green Deal includes decision to become carbon neutral and even carbon negative region in order to tackle the climate crisis. Main technical challenge and a key factor in techno-economic analysis of the energy system of the future, based on variable renewable energy sources, is their variable production and its integration. In order to deal with this problem in long-term energy planning, different approaches have been tried, focusing on overcapacity, storage capacities and sectors coupling with heating and transport. In this research, different flexibility options, storage and demand response technologies are modelled on a national energy systems level. With the case study area modelled in EnergyPLAN model, the goal of the research is to show how each flexibility option influences the economically feasible generation capacities of renewable energy sources, storage technologies and demand response in order to reach a certain share of renewable energy in final energy consumed. To follow the numerous possible configurations of the system, flexibility index for each option and a flexibility vector for each scenario are introduced. Results show which flexibility options play key role in important steps of energy transition to 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% RES energy system.

AB  - To investigate the magnetic behavior of starch-coated cobalt ferrites, well-established synthetic methods, i.e., coprecipitation, mechanochemical, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, microemulsion, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal syntheses were chosen for their preparation. The obtained materials had pure single-phase spinel structures. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that the morphology of the samples is not uniform, and particle aggregation is a dominant process. Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the presence of starch in all–coated samples. The unusually higher saturation magnetization of starch-coated samples than their as-prepared analogs, obtained by coprecipitation, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal methods, might be explained by the Ostwald ripening mechanism induced by the coating process. A decrease in magnetization was noticed for the starch-functionalized nanomaterials synthesized by mechanochemical and microemulsion methods, in comparison to their as-prepared analogs, i.e., the size distribution of such nanoparticles is narrow, and the average diameter of the grains is near critical for the Ostwald ripening process.

AB  - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3 and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300 oC for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 oC for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19 and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3 phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.
