AB - This research is devoted to the determination of hidden dependencies between the flow of particles that come from the Sun and precipitation-induced floods in the United Kingdom (UK). The analysis covers 20 flood events during the period from October 2001 to December 2019. The parameters of solar activity were used as model input data, while precipitations data in the period 10 days before and during each flood event were used as model output. The time lag of 0–9 days was taken into account in the research. Correlation analysis was conducted to determine the degree of randomness for the time series of input and output parameters. For establishing a potential causative link, machine learning classification predictive modeling was applied. Two approaches, the decision tree, and the random forest were used. We analyzed the accuracy of classification models forecast from 0 to 9 days in advance. It was found that the most important factors for flood forecasting are proton density with a time lag of 9, differential proton flux in the range of 310–580 keV, and ion temperature. Research in this paper has shown that the decision tree model is more accurate and adequate in predicting the appearance of precipitation-induced floods up to 9 days ahead with an accuracy of 91%. The results of this study confirmed that by increasing technical capabilities, using improved machine learning techniques and large data sets, it is possible to improve the understanding of the physical link between the solar wind and tropospheric weather and help improve severe weather forecasting.

AB - Metal music is known for being, in the words of sociologist Deena Weinstein (2000: 134), a genre primarily designed “(...) of, by, and for males”. Although its foundational postulates, sound and behavior are traditionally seen as masculine, this genre has been also a place for subversion of the masculine and transgression into androgyny and femininity. Since its inception in the 1970s, metal offered a myriad of possibilities for male performers. It is, thus, not surprising that during the first several decades of the genre’s development, women were mainly part of the audience or male musicians’ muses. This trend is more noticeably being challenged in the last two decades. Women are taking on not only the role of band vocalists (which is traditionally expected), but also the symbolic leadership as guitarplayersand other instrumentalists. This chapter sheds light on the historical circumstances and characteristics of female leadership in Serbian metal, focusing on the development of metal subgenres and their relationship to women in the local and international context. Since female roles in metal bands are still, by and large, the ones of vocalists, this chapter also gives insights into the development of female voice in metal – from mainstream clean and operatic singing in symphonic metal to the technically extended vocals of extreme metal.

AB - Metal subgenres such as, for example, death metal, black metal, doom metal, which are considered as constituents of the “meta-genre” of extreme metal, have built up a very specific sound and imagery during the last several decades. As Keith Kahn-Harris noticed, this cluster of sub-genres gathers musical acts of different historical backgrounds and ideologies, which show the highest level of diversity, artistic vibrancy and dynamics, while at the same time being the most problematic area of metal culture in general. The supposed aggression, radicalism, and exclusivity in sound stem not only from the fast, virtuoso, and technically demanding playing of the instruments, but also from the very peculiar vocal emissions. This monstrous voice, which is the result of extended vocal techniques (primarily screams, growls, squeals), is the point of intersection for several issues concerning voice, body, and technology.
In this paper, I will give insight into the key points regarding these questions, while also delving into the issue of gender. For, although metal culture has historically been considered to be male-oriented—and especially so in extreme metal—the noticeable trend of the growing number of female musicians and vocalists in this scene encourages us to further explore who can stand behind the monstrous voice.

AB - Strictly confidential reports from the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs add a new dimension to events in Serbia and Yugoslavia in the second half of the 1960s. According to their content, the strengthening of the autonomy of Kosovo and Metohija was the result of a change in the balance of power at the top of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia after the Brioni Plenum in 1966. Leading Croatian and Slovenian officials held the majority of the party’s control. According to the reports, party leaders Vladimir Bakarić and Edvard Kardelj intended to disintegrate Yugoslavia and allow Croatia and Slovenia to gain independence, and the League of Communists of Yugoslavia’s Kosovo policy was a key component of that strategy. Leader of Kosovo Albanians Fadilj Hoxha gained complete control of the province’s party, judicial, and se curity apparatuses thanks to the political support he received from Broz, Kardelj, and Bakarić. Reports also confirm the emergence of mass emigration of Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija, owing to threatened security and ethnically motivated persecution from the province’s companies and institutions. The Al banian population in Kosovo and Metohija developed national euphoria as a result of the new circumstances, which was reflected in public demands for the province's separation from Serbia, the use of the Albanian flag in state institu tions, and the establishment of a special official status for the Albanian lan guage in the province. According to the report, the German intelligence service aimed at the secession of Kosovo and Metohija from Serbia and Yugoslavia and the establishment of another Albanian state in the Balkans.

AB - This article is an extract from my ongoing investigation of the destinies of Serbian
composers who have emigrated since the early 1990s, a period that was marked by the
dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars when
hundreds of thousands of professionals left the country and settled all over the world.
Such a massive ‘brain drain’ has had a devastating impact on many professional
realms in the entire former-Yugoslav region. Thus far, I have located more than
seventy Serbian composers who currently live and work abroad, a significant number
for such a small country. In this article, I focus on the professional and personal
trajectories of several composers who have managed to establish successful careers in
various Western European countries. A recent monograph by Elena Dubinets, Russian
Composers Abroad: How They Left, Stayed, Returned (Bloomington: Indiana
University Press, 2021), serves as my discoursive ‘counterpoint’.

AB - Nanopowders of up-conversion SrGd2O4 orthorhombic (Pnma) phase co-doped with different Yb3+ (1, 2.5 and 5 at%) and constant Er3+ (0.5 at%) ions were successfully prepared via sol-gel assisted combustion. Rietveld refinement indicated unit cell lattice parameters increase with Yb3+ and Er3+ ions doping. Scanning transmission electron microscopy with corresponding energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that obtained powders are composed of agglomerated nanoparticles that have a uniform distribution of all constituting elements. Photoluminescence measurements implied intensification of the up-conversion (UC) emission in the visible part of spectrum with the increase of Yb3+ content, which is followed by a significant change in the green to red ratio. Two-photon UC processes are established as a result of Er3+ f-f electronic transitions: green emission at 523 and 551 nm (2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) as well as a red emission at 661 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2). The highest value of absolute quantum yield of 0.055% is determined for SrGd2O4 nanoparticles doped with 0.5 at% of Er3+ and co-doped with 5 at% of Yb3+ (λexc = 976 nm, power density 200 W/cm2).

AB - Although research on the early Serbian music discography has yet to move past its initial stages, some of the figures of significant influence on Serbian music in the early 20th century can be recognized. Still, the network of traditional music practices, academic art circles and new industries – including the discographic one – has not been illuminated. Among said figures we find singer Mijat Mijatović (1887–1937), whose significance is, formally speaking, reflected in the number of 78 rpm records he produced and, consequently and substantially, in the impact his repertoire and performing style had on the musical culture of his time. In that regard, a collection of seven songs titled “Mijatovke” by Stanislav Binički (1872–1942) are of paradigmatic value. The title suggests the influence Mijatović’s performance of these traditional songs had, while the notes on the records argue for the composer’s authorship. Binički’s position as a conductor of the esteemed King’s Guard Orchestra probably affected the eventual publication of this ensemble’s records of “Mijatovke”. The record’s impact is related to the growing influence of radio, whose programme noticeably included music from the newest records. Simultaneously, “Mijatovke” songs were distributed as a sheet music publication (for voice and piano) by the prominent publisher Geca Kon. Furthermore, songs from this collection were also performed and recorded by other singers. The collaborative effort of ethnomusicology and musicology will here be aimed towards investigating the role record production had in the (trans) formation of popular folk music of that time, as well as its influence on oral tradition and art music, through the analysis of technological and cultural circumstances and recorded performances of “Mijatovke”.

AB - Christianization had a prominent place in Byzantine policy. By converting barbarian groups that lived outside of the Empire’s borders, Constantinople brought those peoples into its civilizational circle, and they gradually accepted the cultural models and judicial traditions of the Eastern Roman Empire. As for the communities within its own borders, Byzantium tended to manifest a higher degree of political and military domination, but that was not always enough to completely integrate various non-Rhomaic ethnic groups (ethnoi) into the Byzantine society. Hence, the state relied on the activities of the Church, whose instruments in the process of Byzantinizing barbarians played an important role. In that field, the Church of Constantinople acted through an organized network of bishoprics, autocephalous archbishoprics, and metropolitanates, some of which are particularly notable in this regard: first of all, the newly formed episcopal sees whose names testify to the distinctive ethnic composition of their flocks. The most informative sources about them are Notitiae Episcopatuum of the Church of Constantinople and the documents of ecclesiastical councils. In those sources, they appear in the last decades of the 9th century. The bishoprics in question are Drougoubiteia, Smolaina, Bagenitia, and Mainē, as well as Bardariōtai Tourkoi (of the Hungarians) and Sagoudaneia, which appear slightly later. In the preceding centuries, the Christianization process was generally launched from existing ecclesiastical centers, whose primates gradually expanded their jurisdiction to include neighboring areas. Alternately, cathedrae could be restored or founded in the Church of Constantinople, but they had no formal ethnic qualifiers, such as the autocephalous archbishopric (and later metropolitanate) in Patras. Aware of the importance that a particular system of church organization could have in pacifying the non-Byzantine population, the ruling political and ecclesiastical circles in Constantinople began establishing ethnic bishoprics in the second half of the 9th century. That took place shortly after the end of the century-long Iconoclastic Controversy and the final triumph of Orthodoxy, which allowed the Empire to consolidate itself on the inside both on the political and religious level, and already in the mid-9th century, it launched a sweeping missionary campaign that targeted various non-Christian peoples within or beyond its borders. Ethnic bishoprics were mostly formed in areas where there were ethnic archontiai. The synchronized activity of the church and state in the subsequent process of integrating non- Rhomaic peoples is also evidenced by the evolution of the administrative status of ethnic archontiai, on the one hand, and the almost parallel development of ethnic bishoprics in the territorial-administrative system of the Church of Constantinople, on the other hand. More specifically, from the second half of the 10th and especially in the 11th and 12th centuries, the archontiai transformed into provinces, i.e., themes, losing the hallmarks of autonomy that they, as distinctive institutional forms, had had in the theme system. After the 11th century, more or less concurrently with the gradual dissolution of ethnic archontiai, the ethnic bishoprics that once existed in the same areas disappear from the sources. Given that the archontiai represented a transitional institutional form of governance, established with the aim of gradually integrating barbarians into the Byzantine administrative system, and that their transformation into provinces marked the end of the main stage in that process, it can be assumed that the ethnic bishoprics in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Church of Constantinople had a similar role. Their establishment marked the beginning of the last stage in the Christianization and Byzantinization of non-Rhomaic and pagan groups in the Empire, which was mostly – at least in Greece, Macedonia, and Thrace, where the ethnic bishoprics were active – completed in the 11th century, consequently removing the need for separate ethnic sees. Finally, it should be noted that, within the Patriarchate of Constantinople, also functioned the church organization in Crimea with a Gothic cathedra – a church unusual in many aspects and based on ethnic principles. It started as a bishopric and then became a metropolitanate (envisaged as a big diocese intended to include a larger number of barbarian groups in Crimea, southern Russia, and Transcaucasia), and finally an autocephalous archbishopric, equalizing its status with other ecclesiastical sees of the Church of Constantinople on the Crimean Peninsula.

It started as a bishopric and then became a metropolitanate (envisaged as a big diocese intended to include a larger number of barbarian groups in Crimea, southern Russia, and Transcaucasia), and finally an autocephalous archbishopric, equalizing its status with other ecclesiastical sees of the Church of Constantinople on the Crimean Peninsula.",

The most significant event during his administration as nunciature was the election of a new patriarch in February 1938. This paper uses reports and letters to Secretary of State Pacelli, as well as unpublished Bertoli’s letters to Cardinal Pellegrinetti in Rome, in which he talks about the Serbian Orthodox Church election assembly, candidates and the personality of the new patriarch Gavrilo Dožić, and in which he is expressing his rather negative opinion motivated by the bad relations with the Serbian Orthodox Church due to the concordat.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - Solidification of the aluminum alloys takes place in heat-resistant refractory materials made of either metal or oxides that are stable at high temperatures. The significantly different thermal conductivities between metals and heat-resistant oxides cause solidification with significantly different cooling rates. In this work, we formed a secondary Al-8wt%Si-3wt%Cu alloy in a stainless steel mould, a thin-walled stainless steel cup, and a thick-walled zirconium oxide cup. The course of the formation of the solidified structure was monitored by immersed thermocouples, which enabled the computer analysis of the cooling curves. The parameters on which the cooling rate had the most significant influence are the undercooling values of the formation of primary aluminum crystals, the time of the growth of primary aluminum crystals and the total solidification time from the formation of the first solid crystals to the formation of a fully solidified structure. The Al-8wt%Si-3wt%Cu aluminum alloy formed in metal mould has a smaller grain size and consequently higher tensile strength, lower macro-porosity and less rough surface than the alloy formed in refractory oxide coatings. The examined heat-resistant refractory material influenced the formation of three basic micro-constituents in the Al-8wt%Si-3wt%Cu alloy in different time intervals, which led to the formation of a different microstructure, where the decision on the choice of material for the heat-resistant refractory material depends on the profitability of the entire process, the required quality of the external surfaces and required minimum strength of the final product.

Ispitivane termootporne obloge su uticale na formiranje tri osnovna mikrokonstituenta u Al-8wt%Si-3wt%Cu leguri u različitim vremenskim intervalima, što je dovelo do formiranja različite mikrostrukture, gde odluka o izboru materijala termootporne obloge zavisi od isplativosti celokupnog procesa, zahtevanog kvaliteta spoljnih površina i zahtevane minimalne čvrstoće konačnog proizvoda., Solidification of the aluminum alloys takes place in heat-resistant refractory materials made of either metal or oxides that are stable at high temperatures. The examined heat-resistant refractory material influenced the formation of three basic micro-constituents in the Al-8wt%Si-3wt%Cu alloy in different time intervals, which led to the formation of a different microstructure, where the decision on the choice of material for the heat-resistant refractory material depends on the profitability of the entire process, the required quality of the external surfaces and required minimum strength of the final product.",

AB - Powder mixture consisted of ZnO, Mn2O3 (MnCO3) and Fe2O3 blended powders, was found laminating during compaction. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a combination of PVA with polyethylene glycol (PEG) added as a plasticizer, were introduced as polymer binders to improve the compaction of oxide mixtures. It has been done by forming a suspension of oxide mixture and varying the polymer solution concentration and composition. By evaporating the solvent, new materials were obtained, which consist of oxide particles bound via polymer. In such a manner obtained hybrid materials were characterized with attenuated total reflection Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The oxide polymer material was compacted at 200 MPa and the expansion of this compact during heating was monitored in temperature range up to 550 ºC with dilatometer. It was found that PVA forms graft polymer with PEG and specific interaction with oxide particles surface was revealed.

AB - Temperature- and humidity-sensing properties were evaluated of NixMg1-x spinel ferrites (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method using citric acid as fuel and nitrate ions as oxidizing agents. After the exothermic reaction, amorphous powders were calcined at 700 °C followed by characterization with XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM microscopy. Synthesized powders were tested as humidity- and temperature-sensing materials in the form of thick films on interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate in a climatic chamber. The physicochemical investigation of synthesized materials revealed a cubic spinel Fd3¯m phase, nanosized but agglomerated particles with a partially to completely inverse spinel structure with increasing Ni content. Ni0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the highest material constant (B30,90) value of 3747 K and temperature sensitivity (α) of −4.08%/K compared to pure magnesium ferrite (B30,90 value of 3426 K and α of −3.73%/K) and the highest average sensitivity towards humidity of 922 kΩ/%RH in the relative humidity (RH) range of 40–90% at the working temperature of 25 °C.

AB - Multi-phase ceramics based on ZrB2, TiB2 and doped with CrB2 and SiC were prepared by powder metallurgy and hot pressing to explore the possibility of obtaining multi-scale microstructures by super-saturation of complex (Zr,Ti,Cr)B2 solid solutions. Core–shell structures formed in TiB2 grains, whereas ZrB2 appeared to form a homogeneous solid solution with the other metals. Precipitation of nano-inclusions within both micron-sized borides was assessed by transmission electron microscopy and thermodynamics elucidated the preferential formation of boride inclusions due to the specific sintering atmosphere. In addition, atomic size factors explicated the precipitation of CrB2 nano-particles into ZrB2-rich grains and of ZrB2 nano-particles into TiB2-rich grains. The hardness of the constituent phases measured by nanoindentation ranged from 36 to 43 GPa.

AB - Hydroxyapatite attracts great attention as hard tissues implant material for bones and teeth. Its application in reconstructive medicine depends on its biocompatibility, which is in a function of composition and surface properties. The insertion of a protein element in the composition of implants can improve the cell adhesion and the osseointegration. Having this in mind, the proposal of this work was to develop L-alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and to study their biocompatibility. Two L-alanine sources and three grafting methods were used for hydroxyapatite surface functionalization. The efficiency of grafting was determined based on X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated the formation of hydroxyapatite with 8–25 wt% of organic content, depending on the grafting method. Protein adsorption, cell adhesion, and viability studies were carried out to evaluate biological properties of grafted materials. The viability of MG-63 human osteoblastic cells following 24 h incubation with the alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite samples is well preserved, being in all cases above the viability of cells incubated with hydroxyapatite. The alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite prepared in situ and by simple mixture showed higher protein adsorption and cell adhesion, respectively, indicating their potential toward use in regenerative medicine.

AB - Purpose: Biofilm-free implant surface is ultimate prerequisite for successful soft and bone tissue integration. Objective of the study was to estimate the effects of argon plasma healing abutment pre-treatment (PT) on peri-implant soft-tissue phenotype (PiSP), inflammation, plaque accumulation and the microbiome (PiM) between non-treated (NPT) and treated (PT) abutments following 3-months healing period. The hypothesis was that cell-conductive and antimicrobial properties of PT would yield optimal conditions for soft tissue integration.
Material and Methods: Two months following second-phase surgery, microbiological and clinical parameters were assessed around thirty-six healing abutments with two types of microtopography, smooth surface (MACHINED) and ultrathin threaded microsurface (ROUGH). A two level randomization schema was used to achieve equal distribution and abutments were randomly divided into rough and machined groups, and then divided into PT and NPT groups. PiM was assessed using next-generation DNA sequencing.
Results: PiM bacterial composition was highly diverse already two months post-implantation, consisting of key-stone pathogens, early and late colonizers, while the mycobiome was less diverse. PT was associated with lower plaque accumulation and inflammation without significant impact on PiSP, while in NPT clinical parameters were increased and associated with periopathogens. NPT mostly harbored late colonizers, while PT exerted higher abundance of early colonizers suggesting less advanced plaque formation. Interaction analysis in PT demonstrated S. mitis co-occurrence with pro-healthy Rothia dentocariosa and co-exclusion with Parvimonas micra, Porphyromonas endodontalis and Prevotella oris. PiSP parameters were generally similar between the groups, but significant association between PiM and keratinized mucosa width was observed in both groups, with remarkably more expressed diversity in NPT compared to PT. PT resulted in significantly lower BOP and PI around rough and machined abutments, respectively, without specific effect on PiM and PiSP.
Conclusions: PT contributed to significantly the less advanced biofilm accumulation and inflammation without specific effects on PiSP.

AB - Sn-Pd electrocatalysts with a constant atomic ratio of 60 at.% Sn‒40 at.% Pd suitable for potential application in direct ethanol fuel cells were synthesized using a novel two-step electrodeposition method. First, Sn was electrodeposited in various forms of dendrites, from spear-like and needle-like to individual fern-like dendrites to a network of intertwined fern-like dendrites, by varying the cathodic potential and then performing electrodeposition of Pd at a constant current density in the second step. A morphological and elemental analysis of Sn and Sn-Pd electrocatalysts was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, while the size of Sn dendrites was analyzed using the particle size distribution (PSD) method. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry were applied in order to study the catalytic behavior of Sn-Pd electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), while CO stripping was used to estimate the antipoisoning capability of the electrocatalysts. The Sn surface morphology of the sub-layer was highly correlated with the electrocatalytic activity of the examined Sn-Pd electrocatalysts. The high activity it presented towards the EOR showed the suitability of the Sn-Pd electrocatalyst constructed from individual fern-like Sn dendrites as a sub-layer. Compared to Pd alone, this Sn-Pd catalyst showed more than 3 times higher activity and improved EOR kinetics. This enhancement in the catalytic activity of the Sn-Pd electrocatalysts is attributed to both the morphological characteristics of Sn as a sub-layer and the bifunctional effect.

AB - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.
