AB - This article is an extract from my ongoing investigation of the destinies of Serbian
composers who have emigrated since the early 1990s, a period that was marked by the
dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars when
hundreds of thousands of professionals left the country and settled all over the world.
Such a massive ‘brain drain’ has had a devastating impact on many professional
realms in the entire former-Yugoslav region. Thus far, I have located more than
seventy Serbian composers who currently live and work abroad, a significant number
for such a small country. In this article, I focus on the professional and personal
trajectories of several composers who have managed to establish successful careers in
various Western European countries. A recent monograph by Elena Dubinets, Russian
Composers Abroad: How They Left, Stayed, Returned (Bloomington: Indiana
University Press, 2021), serves as my discoursive ‘counterpoint’.

AB - Christianization had a prominent place in Byzantine policy. By converting barbarian groups that lived outside of the Empire’s borders, Constantinople brought those peoples into its civilizational circle, and they gradually accepted the cultural models and judicial traditions of the Eastern Roman Empire. As for the communities within its own borders, Byzantium tended to manifest a higher degree of political and military domination, but that was not always enough to completely integrate various non-Rhomaic ethnic groups (ethnoi) into the Byzantine society. Hence, the state relied on the activities of the Church, whose instruments in the process of Byzantinizing barbarians played an important role. In that field, the Church of Constantinople acted through an organized network of bishoprics, autocephalous archbishoprics, and metropolitanates, some of which are particularly notable in this regard: first of all, the newly formed episcopal sees whose names testify to the distinctive ethnic composition of their flocks. The most informative sources about them are Notitiae Episcopatuum of the Church of Constantinople and the documents of ecclesiastical councils. In those sources, they appear in the last decades of the 9th century. The bishoprics in question are Drougoubiteia, Smolaina, Bagenitia, and Mainē, as well as Bardariōtai Tourkoi (of the Hungarians) and Sagoudaneia, which appear slightly later. In the preceding centuries, the Christianization process was generally launched from existing ecclesiastical centers, whose primates gradually expanded their jurisdiction to include neighboring areas. Alternately, cathedrae could be restored or founded in the Church of Constantinople, but they had no formal ethnic qualifiers, such as the autocephalous archbishopric (and later metropolitanate) in Patras. Aware of the importance that a particular system of church organization could have in pacifying the non-Byzantine population, the ruling political and ecclesiastical circles in Constantinople began establishing ethnic bishoprics in the second half of the 9th century. That took place shortly after the end of the century-long Iconoclastic Controversy and the final triumph of Orthodoxy, which allowed the Empire to consolidate itself on the inside both on the political and religious level, and already in the mid-9th century, it launched a sweeping missionary campaign that targeted various non-Christian peoples within or beyond its borders. Ethnic bishoprics were mostly formed in areas where there were ethnic archontiai. The synchronized activity of the church and state in the subsequent process of integrating non- Rhomaic peoples is also evidenced by the evolution of the administrative status of ethnic archontiai, on the one hand, and the almost parallel development of ethnic bishoprics in the territorial-administrative system of the Church of Constantinople, on the other hand. More specifically, from the second half of the 10th and especially in the 11th and 12th centuries, the archontiai transformed into provinces, i.e., themes, losing the hallmarks of autonomy that they, as distinctive institutional forms, had had in the theme system. After the 11th century, more or less concurrently with the gradual dissolution of ethnic archontiai, the ethnic bishoprics that once existed in the same areas disappear from the sources. Given that the archontiai represented a transitional institutional form of governance, established with the aim of gradually integrating barbarians into the Byzantine administrative system, and that their transformation into provinces marked the end of the main stage in that process, it can be assumed that the ethnic bishoprics in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Church of Constantinople had a similar role. Their establishment marked the beginning of the last stage in the Christianization and Byzantinization of non-Rhomaic and pagan groups in the Empire, which was mostly – at least in Greece, Macedonia, and Thrace, where the ethnic bishoprics were active – completed in the 11th century, consequently removing the need for separate ethnic sees. Finally, it should be noted that, within the Patriarchate of Constantinople, also functioned the church organization in Crimea with a Gothic cathedra – a church unusual in many aspects and based on ethnic principles. It started as a bishopric and then became a metropolitanate (envisaged as a big diocese intended to include a larger number of barbarian groups in Crimea, southern Russia, and Transcaucasia), and finally an autocephalous archbishopric, equalizing its status with other ecclesiastical sees of the Church of Constantinople on the Crimean Peninsula.

AB - Purpose: Biofilm-free implant surface is ultimate prerequisite for successful soft and bone tissue integration. Objective of the study was to estimate the effects of argon plasma healing abutment pre-treatment (PT) on peri-implant soft-tissue phenotype (PiSP), inflammation, plaque accumulation and the microbiome (PiM) between non-treated (NPT) and treated (PT) abutments following 3-months healing period. The hypothesis was that cell-conductive and antimicrobial properties of PT would yield optimal conditions for soft tissue integration.
Material and Methods: Two months following second-phase surgery, microbiological and clinical parameters were assessed around thirty-six healing abutments with two types of microtopography, smooth surface (MACHINED) and ultrathin threaded microsurface (ROUGH). A two level randomization schema was used to achieve equal distribution and abutments were randomly divided into rough and machined groups, and then divided into PT and NPT groups. PiM was assessed using next-generation DNA sequencing.
Results: PiM bacterial composition was highly diverse already two months post-implantation, consisting of key-stone pathogens, early and late colonizers, while the mycobiome was less diverse. PT was associated with lower plaque accumulation and inflammation without significant impact on PiSP, while in NPT clinical parameters were increased and associated with periopathogens. NPT mostly harbored late colonizers, while PT exerted higher abundance of early colonizers suggesting less advanced plaque formation. Interaction analysis in PT demonstrated S. mitis co-occurrence with pro-healthy Rothia dentocariosa and co-exclusion with Parvimonas micra, Porphyromonas endodontalis and Prevotella oris. PiSP parameters were generally similar between the groups, but significant association between PiM and keratinized mucosa width was observed in both groups, with remarkably more expressed diversity in NPT compared to PT. PT resulted in significantly lower BOP and PI around rough and machined abutments, respectively, without specific effect on PiM and PiSP.
Conclusions: PT contributed to significantly the less advanced biofilm accumulation and inflammation without specific effects on PiSP.

AB - Sn-Pd electrocatalysts with a constant atomic ratio of 60 at.% Sn‒40 at.% Pd suitable for potential application in direct ethanol fuel cells were synthesized using a novel two-step electrodeposition method. First, Sn was electrodeposited in various forms of dendrites, from spear-like and needle-like to individual fern-like dendrites to a network of intertwined fern-like dendrites, by varying the cathodic potential and then performing electrodeposition of Pd at a constant current density in the second step. A morphological and elemental analysis of Sn and Sn-Pd electrocatalysts was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, while the size of Sn dendrites was analyzed using the particle size distribution (PSD) method. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry were applied in order to study the catalytic behavior of Sn-Pd electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), while CO stripping was used to estimate the antipoisoning capability of the electrocatalysts. The Sn surface morphology of the sub-layer was highly correlated with the electrocatalytic activity of the examined Sn-Pd electrocatalysts. The high activity it presented towards the EOR showed the suitability of the Sn-Pd electrocatalyst constructed from individual fern-like Sn dendrites as a sub-layer. Compared to Pd alone, this Sn-Pd catalyst showed more than 3 times higher activity and improved EOR kinetics. This enhancement in the catalytic activity of the Sn-Pd electrocatalysts is attributed to both the morphological characteristics of Sn as a sub-layer and the bifunctional effect.

AB - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.

AB - Nanopowders of up-conversion SrGd2O4 orthorhombic (Pnma) phase co-doped with different Yb3+ (1, 2.5 and 5 at%) and constant Er3+ (0.5 at%) ions were successfully prepared via sol-gel assisted combustion. Rietveld refinement indicated unit cell lattice parameters increase with Yb3+ and Er3+ ions doping. Scanning transmission electron microscopy with corresponding energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that obtained powders are composed of agglomerated nanoparticles that have a uniform distribution of all constituting elements. Photoluminescence measurements implied intensification of the up-conversion (UC) emission in the visible part of spectrum with the increase of Yb3+ content, which is followed by a significant change in the green to red ratio. Two-photon UC processes are established as a result of Er3+ f-f electronic transitions: green emission at 523 and 551 nm (2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) as well as a red emission at 661 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2). The highest value of absolute quantum yield of 0.055% is determined for SrGd2O4 nanoparticles doped with 0.5 at% of Er3+ and co-doped with 5 at% of Yb3+ (λexc = 976 nm, power density 200 W/cm2).

Музикологија / Musicology (33 II/2022)

PY - 2022-12
UR - https://dais.sanu.ac.rs/123456789/13722
Sound Heritage in Ethnomusicology: Approaches and Perspectives,
AB - The decision of the editors of the journal Musicology that this year we should pay more attention to sound sources in music research has guided the effort to contribute with the Main Theme to the study of sound and audio-visual archives, primarily in ethnomusicology. In 2021 the Institute of Musicology SASA organised the conference Sound Heritage in Ethnomusicology: Approaches and Perspectives. Some of the articles in this issue originated from the papers presented at the conference, whereas other authors responded to the invitation of the Editors to contribute their original research on the same topic. All articles in the Main theme add to the study of sound and audio-visual archives in ethnomusicology – from the questioning of the role of historical recordings in society and the system of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), through the presentation of the historical attempt to establish a national archive, the management model of the regional folk music archive, the possibilities to use advanced modern technology in digital collections, to the proposal of a manifesto of applied musicology and the presentation of methodologies in audio-visual ethnomusicology.
Pedro Félix has written an extremely useful article about his own experience on the project of networking intangible cultural and sound heritage, using the example of Portuguese fado. His demonstration of the use of digitised old sound recordings and their subsequent interpretation raises the question of the influence and importance of researchers and professors for contacts made during fieldwork. His exemplary archive (based on Latour’s network of human and non-human actors) shows how a democratic archive works. Whilst criticising archives and the academy as “defenders” of knowledge that influences communities, Felix provocatively demonstrates how an archive should ideally serve intangible cultural heritage. Based on the study of archival documents, Drago Kunej brings an exciting history of the enthusiastic philologist Karel Štrekelj’s first, unsuccessful attempt to acquire a sound recording device in Slovenia. The first step away from the mere recording of musical folklore in Western notation towards the establishment of new methods and a sound archive could not be reached, due to a lack of understanding of professional needs and innovations. This example serves as a lesson for future decision-makers in cultural policies.
Abdullah Akat and Özgün Arda Nural present the mission and strategy, as well
as the challenges of managing the audiovisual archive of the Black Sea folk music,
founded in Trabzon in 2011. Relying on the actor/actant theory of Bruno Latour
and the marketing focus-strategy, they established the principles of the archive
in which special attention was paid to digital preservation. Dragana Stojanović
presents the possibilities of using the so-called blockchain technology in archival
work, especially in sound archives and audio-visual archives. This new tool is based
on contracts between interested parties and opens up numerous ethical questions,
which must be resolved primarily within ethnomusicological research archives.
Ivana Medić publishes a manifesto of applied musicology and presents her earlier
engagement, which was inspired by the same aspiration for influence in society, and
which was carried out by examining the sound ecology of Savamala, a characteristic
Belgrade neighborhood. She highlights the importance of audio-visual recordings as
a field method for preserving different types of heritage and information for future
research, due to the radical changeability of the sound environment. Marco Lutzu
demonstrates the range of his own activities in audio-visual ethnomusicology in
Italy. He analyses his own and archival films, for the purpose of documentary films,
in public (social) ethnomusicological activism and in education (as evidenced
by the selected examples accompanying the text). His goal is to shed light on the
role of ethnomusicologists in the strategies of visual representation of musical
structure and performance, thereby significantly contributing to the development of
ethnomusicological methodologies.
The section Varia brings the results of music research from different perspectives
of musicologists, ethnomusicologists, ethnochoreologists and art historians, so
there is an enviable range of topics discussed on this occasion. The section opens
with Ivana Vesić’s study, which presented the hitherto little-known history of operetta
in interwar Belgrade. She has researched valuable archival materials and printed
articles and reconstructed the appearances and transformations of operetta companies
and the work of several opera theaters. In the analysis of the context, she paid
attention to issues of state cultural policy and competing spheres of entertainment
and culture. Nemanja Sovtić's study is focused on composers from Vojvodina, with
the aim of establishing regional historical synthesis and offering an alternative to that
presented in previous music historiographies. Furthermore, he looks at the production
of composers from this geographic area in socio-historical and musical-historical
contexts. This is followed by Milan Milojković’s study dedicated to the penetration
of computers into the production of popular music in Yugoslavia. This process
took place during the second half of the 1980s. Milojković has identified the equipment
that was being used and the ways of working with it and highlighted the results
achieved by certain technological innovations. The section Varia continues with
articles related to the spheres of traditional music and dance. Anđela Gavrilović’s attention is focused on the representations of chordophone musical instruments in
the scene of the Mocking of Jesus in Serbian medieval art. She bases the interpretation
of their meaning on contextual and comparative analysis, especially in relation to
depictions of the prophet David, also with a chordophone instrument in his hands,
and the interpretation of that instrument in the works of medieval church writers.
Vesna Bajić Stojiljković discusses the meta genre of stage folk music from a historical
perspective, especially from the direction of using traditional music in staged
choreographic works. Based on the overview presented in the first part, she then
talks about the development of stage folk music under the influence of dance music,
as a genre of traditional music, but also of art music inspired by traditional music.
The consideration of the relationship between music and dance continues with Maja
Krasin Matić’s article, which deals with this relationship by focusing on learning and
memorising folk dance choreography. She presents her contribution as an incentive
for interdisciplinarity in the study of music and dance and an affirmation of aspects
of cognitive research within ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology.
In this issue of Musicology, the texts in the section Scientific Reviews and Polemics
refer to publications that remarkably illustrate contemporary studies of music and
dance, including fairly recent or completely new books, published this year, and
in most cases, of a broad international profile. The first among those is Nicolae
Gheorghita’s review of a collection of essays dedicated to the (re)positioning and
(re)shaping of music in post-socialism in countries whose complex social and cultural
transformations began with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Marija Maglov analyses the
collection related to the early record industry by pointing out the actors, spaces and
places outside the main narrative (about the most important publishers, performers,
etc.) established through previous research on this topic. The next presented edition,
reviewed by Zorana Guja Dražeta, testifies to the importance of systematic research
of certain musical phenomena: it is the fourth edition in the European Voices series
dedicated to multipart music, which examines this phenomenon using examples of
instrumental music. Relevant as the “next of kin” to ethnomusicology, the edition
dedicated to Hungarian ethnochoreologist János Fügedi, which primarily contains
texts by researchers of Hungarian dance, but also the results of research into other
dance traditions, is reviewed by Katarina Nikolić. Also “tangentially relevant” for
music sciences are editions written not by professional researchers, but which
nevertheless contain the results of studious dealing with certain topics; such is the
edition dedicated to Enriko Josif, a composer and versatile musical personality, here
reviewed by Marija Golubović.
This year, the Serbian scientific community experienced a heavy loss with the
premature passing of Dr Selena Rakočević, ethnomusicologist and ethnochoreologist;
Katarina Nikolić pays tribute to Rakočević, on behalf of the entire faculty of the
Institute of Musicology SASA.
The editorial staff of the journal Musicology thanks Dr Marija Dumnić Vilotijević for accepting the position of guest editor for the Main Theme and working for the benefit of science and colleagues. During the preparation of the manuscripts for publication in both permanent sections of the journal, the understanding and support of colleagues who accepted the roles of reviewers and responsibly advocated for the improvement of the articles were extremely important, and we sincerely thank them.

Sound Heritage in Ethnomusicology: Approaches and Perspectives,
The decision of the editors of the journal Musicology that this year we should pay more attention to sound sources in music research has guided the effort to contribute with the Main Theme to the study of sound and audio-visual archives, primarily in ethnomusicology. antecedent, neither introduced in the previous discourse, nor contextually available for deictic
reference, thus resembling standard ‘dummy’ pronouns. We argue that the IAC ga is referential
— it refers to a specific Topic Situation (TS). Specifically, it is base-generated as a Direct
Object, marking affectedness of the specific TS. The intensification effects of this clitic emerge
pragmatically, due to Levinson’s (2000) M-principle. The paper provides evidence for TSs as
legitimate syntactic objects (Kratzer 2007/2021), supporting the view that there are no ‘dummy’
pronouns (e.g. Langacker 2011).

AB - In a high fertility context, research on the relationship between parental investment, unwanted births and child nutritional outcomes is limited. The implications may be especially relevant for children coming from the most disadvantaged backgrounds and at increased risk of nutritional deprivation. This study assessed the association between maternal investment, unwanted births disaggregated into mistimed and unwanted children, and child nutritional outcomes in a poor population of Serbian Roma. Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys rounds 5 and 6 data for Serbian Roma settlements were used to account for the association between two measures of maternal investment: weight at birth and parity, and mistimed and unwanted children, and children height-for-age z-score (HAZ), weight-for-age z score (WAZ) and weight-for- height z-score (WHZ). The sample included 130 children aged 0-24 months. The child variables were age, gender, and birth order, while maternal independent variables included age, literacy and access to improved toilet facility as proxies for socioeconomic status. Children born with low birth weight (lower maternal investment in utero) face a significant deficit in terms of their nutritional outcomes, measured by HAZ and WAZ. The effect was aggravated for height if the child was unwanted while there was a positive relationship between access to improved toilet facility and WHZ. Unwanted children were of higher birth order, with older, higher parity mothers than mistimed children. Many of the Roma children may be at risk of undernutrition, however, Roma children who received lower maternal investment in utero, unwanted and living in poorest households may face additional risk.

AB - Abstract
Research on paternal investment and child growth and development is limited outside of high-income countries. Using nationally representative data from low resource Serbian Roma communities, this study examined father investment (direct care), its predictors and the associations between paternal investment, stepfather presence, and child physical growth and early development. The sample included 1222 children aged 35-59 months, out of which 235 were living with biological fathers. Child outcomes included height-for-age z scores, stunting and early child developmental score. Roma paternal investment was relatively low. There was a positive association of father investment and children’s height, and no association with developmental score. The presence of father vs. stepfather did not exert any influence on children. Instead, maternal and child characteristics explained both the overall development and height for Roma children. Thus, older children, born to literate, lower parity mothers of higher status and greater investment had better developmental and growth outcomes; girls were the preferred sex, due to expected fitness benefits. Reverse causality emerged as the most likely pathway through which the cross-sectional association of father direct care with child growth may manifest, such that Roma fathers tend to bias their investment towards taller, more endowed children, because of greater fitness pay-off.

AB - Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to assess whether maternal age at first marriage is associated with nutritional and developmental penalties for Roma children.
Design: Roma nationally representative population-based study. Proxies of child nutritional outcomes included children’s individual-level height-for-age z (HAZ) and weight-for-age z (WAZ) scores, HAZ and WAZ scores below two standard deviations from median of WHO’s reference population (children aged 0-59 months), and Early Child Development (children aged 36-59 months). Multiple and logistic regressions were used to estimate the association between maternal age at marriage, outcomes and other sociodemographic determinants as possible confounders.
Setting: Aggregated data from UNICEF’s fifth and sixth Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys for Serbian Roma settlements.
Subjects: Children (n 2652) aged 0–59 months born to ever-married women aged 15-48.

AB - This book provides students, instructors, and lay-readers with a cross-cultural understanding of storytelling as an art form that has existed for centuries, from the first spoken and sung stories to those that are drawn and performed today.

This book serves as an indispensable resource for students and scholars interested in storytelling and in multicultural approaches to the arts. By taking an evolutionary approach, this book begins with a discussion of origin stories and continues through history to stories of the 21st century. The text not only engages the stories themselves, it also explains how individuals from all disciplines, from doctors and lawyers to priests and journalists, use stories to focus their readers’ and listeners’ attention and influence them.

This text addresses stories and storytelling across both time (thousands of years) and geography, including in-depth descriptions of storytelling practices occurring in more than 40 different cultures around the world. Part I consists of thematic essays, exploring such topics as the history of storytelling, common elements across cultures, different media, lessons stories teach us, and storytelling today. Part II looks at more than 40 different cultures, with entries following the same outline: Overview, Storytellers: Who Tell the Stories, and When, Creation Mythologies, Teaching Tales and Values, and Cultural Preservation. Several tales/tale excerpts accompany each entry.

AB - Influenced by stratospheric total ozone column (TOC), cloud cover, aerosols, albedo, and other factors, levels of daily erythemal dose (H_er) in a specific geographic region show significant variability in time and space. To investigate the degree of randomness and predictability of H_er time series from ground-based observations in Novi Sad, Serbia, during the 2003–2012 time period, we used a set of information measures: Kolmogorov complexity, Kolmogorov complexity spectrum, running Kolmogorov complexity, the largest Lyapunov exponent, Lyapunov time, and Kolmogorov time. The result reveals that fluctuations in daily H_er are moderately random and exhibit low levels of chaotic behavior. We found a larger number of occurrences of deviation from the mean in the time series during the years with lower values of H_er (2007–2009, 2011–2012), which explains the higher complexity. Our analysis indicated that the time series of daily values of H_er show a tendency to increase the randomness when the randomness of cloud cover and TOC increases, which affects the short-term predictability. The prediction horizon of daily H_er values in Novi Sad given by the Lyapunov time corrected for randomness by Kolmogorov is between 1.5 and 3.5 days.
