AB - Four samples containing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) of various sizes are prepared employing a simple low-temperature method of oxidative precipitation from FeCl2∙4H2O-NaOH-NaNO3 aqueous solution. For the preparation of two samples, the usual oxidation-precipitation synthesis protocol is modified by using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelating agent as a stabilizer of the Fe2+ ions in a solution, which results in the partial capping of the prepared MIONs with EDTA molecules. Three out of four samples are subjected to citric acid (CA) functionalization in the post synthesis protocol. Structural and magnetic properties of the synthesized MIONs are assessed using various experimental techniques (XRD, TEM, Fourier transform infrared, dynamic light scattering, Mössbauer, and SQUID). The average size of spherical-like MIONs is tuned from 7 nm to 38 nm by changing the synthesis protocol. Their room temperature saturation magnetization, M s, is in the range of 43 to 91 emu g−1. Magnetic heating ability, expressed via specific absorption rate value, which ranges from 139 to 390 W/gFe, is discussed in relation to their structural and magnetic properties and the possible energy dissipation mechanisms involved. The best heating performance is exhibited by the sample decorated with EDTA and with a bimodal size distribution with average particle sizes of 14 and 37 nm and M s = 87 emu g−1. Though this sample contains particles prone to form aggregates, capping with EDTA provides good colloidal stability of this sample, thus preserving the magnetic heating ability. It is demonstrated that two samples, consisting of 7 nm-sized CA- or 14 nm-sized EDTA/CA-functionalized superparamagnetic MIONs, with a similar hydrodynamic radius, heat in a very similar way in the relatively fast oscillating alternating current magnetic field, f = 577 kHz.

AB - Transcutaneous (non-invasive) functional electrical stimulation (FES) activates the ascending and descending neural pathways in persons with diminished sensory and motor control after a central nervous system (CNS) disease or injury. Application of FES in early phases of rehabilitation (acute and sub-acute) has a carry-over effect in decreasing motor impairment. FES is applied to the peripheral nervous system to activate the nerves and muscles, generate functional movements, and activate efferent and afferent neural pathways to close the biological motor-sensory loop. This promotes brain plasticity, the most important mechanism in rehabilitation after brain injuries. In the case of Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI), the functional recovery is less pronounced; however, the influence on the reduction of secondary complications of paralysis (e.g., loss of muscle bulk and strength, pressure sores, cardio-vascular deterioration, diminished gastric and urinary functioning, spasticity, reduced range of movement in joints, etc.) is pronounced. The most common applications of non-invasive FES are the restoration of standing and walking, the generation of cyclic movements for pedaling or rowing, and manipulation and grasping.

AB - The study examines the model of the establishment of a Serbian political, spiritual and scriptural center in Serres during three decades of Serbian rule (1345–1371). The model is considered against two circumstances: historical – the anathema of the Serbian ruler, patriarch and archbishops, and geographical – the proximity of Serres to Mount Athos and the Bulgarian Empire. There are three important focuses of the work: the Four Gospels of Metropolitan Jacob, the books donated to the Sinai monks and the activity of monk Isai in the circle of secular and ecclesiastical aristocracy in Serres. By pointing out certain characteristics of the book of Metropolitan Jacob, the unique program of the Serbian ruler and the Serbian church is sketched. Although exceptional individuals dedicated to literature stayed in Serres, the connection with the scriptoria on Mount Athos and those in the central part of the Serbian Empire raises the question to what extent we can speak of the existence of a developed Slavic scriptorium in Serres.

AB - In 1956, the Institute of Archaeology and the National Museum in Belgrade
carried out excavations at the site of Supska, near Ćuprija, in Central Serbia. Based on
the material culture findings, the site is mostly known as a Late Neolithic one; however, archaeological findings from other periods were discovered too. In the 1956 excavations, the cultural layers, and archaeological features with the Vinča culture archaeological materials were examined, as well as one grave, marked as Grave 1. The results of this excavation have been previously published in one monograph; however, an anthropological analysis of the individual found in Grave 1 has not been conducted before. In this paper, we present the results of contextual, bioanthropological, stable isotopes and C14 analyses of human skeletal remains found in Grave 1. The results showed that a young adult, who had experienced nonspecific metabolic stress during childhood, as evidenced by traces of linear enamel hypoplasia and porotic hyperostosis, was buried in this grave. AMS date revealed that this individual lived between 1280–1390 cal. AD, while the results of the stable isotope analyses suggested that it had mixed diet
based on C4 plants (such as millet) and/or C3 plants, with larger amounts of animal
protein, possible deriving from freshwater fish.

carried out excavations at the site of Supska, near Ćuprija, in Central Serbia. Based on
the material culture findings, the site is mostly known as a Late Neolithic one; however, archaeological findings from other periods were discovered too. AD, while the results of the stable isotope analyses suggested that it had mixed diet
based on C4 plants (such as millet) and/or C3 plants, with larger amounts of animal
protein, possible deriving from freshwater fish.",

AB - This book is a recent addition to the series Palgrave European Film and Media Studies. Edited by Ewa Mazierska, Professor of Film Studies at the University of Central Lancashire, and Zsolt Győri, Assistant Professor at the University of Debrecen, Institute of English and American Studies, the book engages with an often overlooked topic, namely, the state (and status) of Eastern European popular music in a transnational context. In the “Introduction”, the editors emphasise two main reasons for choosing popular music as their object of study over other genres. According to them, popular music is particularly adept at crossing national borders because its market is more global than that of classical music. In addition, popular music is more international than folk music. Both claims are highly debatable, not to mention that there are various genres of contemporary music in which the categories of classical and popular, or folk and popular, overlap.

“Mijatovke” collection on 78 rpm records: Early recordings as contributors in the formation of national culture

AB - Although research on the early Serbian music discography has yet to move past its initial stages, some of the figures of significant influence on Serbian music in the early 20th century can be recognized. Still, the network of traditional music practices, academic art circles and new industries – including the discographic one – has not been illuminated. Among said figures we find singer Mijat Mijatović (1887–1937), whose significance is, formally speaking, reflected in the number of 78 rpm records he produced and, consequently and substantially, in the impact his repertoire and performing style had on the musical culture of his time. In that regard, a collection of seven songs titled “Mijatovke” by Stanislav Binički (1872–1942) are of paradigmatic value. The title suggests the influence Mijatović’s performance of these traditional songs had, while the notes on the records argue for the composer’s authorship. Binički’s position as a conductor of the esteemed King’s Guard Orchestra probably affected the eventual publication of this ensemble’s records of “Mijatovke”. The record’s impact is related to the growing influence of radio, whose programme noticeably included music from the newest records. Simultaneously, “Mijatovke” songs were distributed as a sheet music publication (for voice and piano) by the prominent publisher Geca Kon. Furthermore, songs from this collection were also performed and recorded by other singers. The collaborative effort of ethnomusicology and musicology will here be aimed towards investigating the role record production had in the (trans) formation of popular folk music of that time, as well as its influence on oral tradition and art music, through the analysis of technological and cultural circumstances and recorded performances of “Mijatovke”.

AB - Metal music is known for being, in the words of sociologist Deena Weinstein (2000: 134), a genre primarily designed “(...) of, by, and for males”. Although its foundational postulates, sound and behavior are traditionally seen as masculine, this genre has been also a place for subversion of the masculine and transgression into androgyny and femininity. Since its inception in the 1970s, metal offered a myriad of possibilities for male performers. It is, thus, not surprising that during the first several decades of the genre’s development, women were mainly part of the audience or male musicians’ muses. This trend is more noticeably being challenged in the last two decades. Women are taking on not only the role of band vocalists (which is traditionally expected), but also the symbolic leadership as guitarplayersand other instrumentalists. This chapter sheds light on the historical circumstances and characteristics of female leadership in Serbian metal, focusing on the development of metal subgenres and their relationship to women in the local and international context. Since female roles in metal bands are still, by and large, the ones of vocalists, this chapter also gives insights into the development of female voice in metal – from mainstream clean and operatic singing in symphonic metal to the technically extended vocals of extreme metal.

music family from the western Serbian town of Šabac. I begin by overviewing
cultural entrepreneurship and its characteristics and then provide the context
for a discussion of the Cicvarićs’ activities as regards the traditional role of
Roma musicians in Serbia and the musical life of Šabac at the time. Following
a discussion of their repertoire and the innovative business practices that they
introduced, I conclude by highlighting the aspects of their work that can be
assessed today as examples of cultural entrepreneurship. I conceptualize the
Cicvarićs as pioneers of cultural entrepreneurship in Serbia, paying attention
to the notions of supply and demand, economic development, and historical
processes of producing, distributing, and consuming urban folk music in

KUD “Bánát”: Folk Dance Group as the Vehicle of Safeguarding the Serbian Cultural Heritage in the Context of Diaspora

AB - The Folk Dance Group “Bánát” was established in the village Deszk in South-eastern Hungary in
1948 as a way of preserving and empowering the identity of the Serbian minority. As a result of the

AB - The question of the ‘Orient’ in the humanities gained significant attention after the landmark work
of Edward Said (1978). However, the issue of representation from the position of power was of a
much older date, and the eurocentric perspective of the late XIX and most of the XX centuries
influenced comparative musicology and then ethnomusicology to a certain extent, due to the fact
that ethnomusicology as a discipline is rooted in the observation of music of ‘the Others’. Said’s
work also affected academic discourse about questions of (Middle) East wars and the history and
social reflections of the religions, and it was a necessary basis for postcolonial and decolonization
studies in global terms, which occupy a significant position in contemporary ethnomusicology
(and musicology). Perceived from the aspect of ‘the crossroads between East and West’ and the
tendency to abandon the burdening synonym for conflicting nations, the Balkans, as the main
focus area for this symposium, is observed as a field for research of correlations in music and
dance heritage, as well as the space where/through which music/dance and musicians/dancers are migrating and moving.
In the XXI century, the study of cultural relations through music and dance in the Balkans, with
the idea of establishing historical and contemporary connections, has stimulated several international projects based on collaborative ethnomusicological, ethnochoreological and musicological research. The opening and growth of national ‘schools’ for music and dance studies, as well as the interpretation of new primary sources, expanded the possibility of writing new histories of a regional character. The liminal position of the Balkans has inspired numerous discussions in global humanities about this region as a crossroads and a bridge between East and West, with a special emphasis on the spectrum of correlations of Oriental, Mediterranean and Balkan cultures. On this occasion, a rethinking of the East would be encouraged, with a special focus on establishing common heritage, practices and tendencies in music and dance – from new applications and interpretations of the concepts of Orientalism and postcolonialism to the presentation of the results of a structural analysis of presumed Eastern influences in a broader sense. This combination of joint research of international scholars and the fluidity of the East–West axis points not only to comparative methods, but also to the examination of current theoretical concepts. By following the process and consequences of historical and contemporary migrations, the questions of music and dance in multi-ethnic environments, transnational music and/or dance forms, mobility of musicians and dancers, music and dance in the diaspora are opened up; today they can be of interest to the musicological, ethnomusicological and ethnochoreological research
teams in the widest geographical frameworks. In the context of the investigations of music and
dance in the Balkans, it would be particularly important to build upon the previous studies of
complex music and dance phenomena by focusing on the aforementioned aspects of moving.
The list of topics of the symposium includes (but is not limited to):
- music and dance of the Slavic and Turkish peoples in the post-Ottoman context;
- pan-Balkan music and dance practices in the context of heritage;
- scientific, artistic and performative interpretations of the Orient in music and dance practices; - music and dance in the context of migration;
- music and dance in the diaspora;
- methodologies of collaborative research in musicology, ethnomusicology and
ethnochoreology.
The duality and simultaneous uniqueness of music and dance positioned on the East–West pivot
allow new theoretical propositions, and this symposium encourages the invention of new analytical methods, new readings of known Balkan practices, and even proposals for redefining this imaginary and generalizing axis.

AB - Kolo u tri is a dance genre characterized by a lateral symmetric eight-measure
dance pattern movement and its four-measure phrase in the dichotomous
organization. The appearance of this genre is recognized through numerous
names, melodies, and sometimes specific kinetic contents (the most famous
are moravac, užičko kolo, Žikino kolo). One of the manifestations of the dance
genre Kolo u tri is also a vocal-instrumental dance form – gara (pl.: gare).
Gara includes simultaneous singing of improvisatory lyrics by the singer,
instrumental accompaniment by an orchestra, and kinetic performance of an
eight-measure dance pattern which are standard features that belong to the
genre Kolo u tri. Based on empirical information documented at the wedding
ritual in the village Stajićevo (Banat area, North Serbia) in 2016, this paper
will illustrate and define the essential structural-formal features from a dance
perspective. Moreover, the paper will do a poetic and musical analysis to
show all characteristics of this syncretic form composed of words, music, and
movements.

Urban Folk Music Legacy from Former Yugoslavia in Contemporary Istanbul

AB - This article presents initial observations from the fieldwork in Istanbul in 2022,
where short-term research of immigrant communities from former Yugoslavia
was conducted within the project of bilateral cooperation, Exploring the Tracks
of Balkan Culture: Serbian–Turkish Connections in Music and Dance from
Ottoman Period until Today (TRackeRS). Nowadays, these communities are
specific because of their atypical migration direction, from Serbia and former
Yugoslavia – toward the East. They cherish their traditions through choirs, and
nostalgically remember their homeland through two types of urban folk music
related to Serbia (and former Yugoslavia) – sevdalinka (which evokes their
Ottoman ancestry) and novokomponovana narodna muzika (‘newly-composed
folk music’, which evokes their Yugoslav reality from the time of their youth).
The article examines the role of these popular folk music practices, their
potential in safeguarding the culture of origin (especially because of the
threatening oblivion of the language), as well as the potential for social
cohesion in choral singing.

AB - We are delighted to present a special issue of the Conservatorium focusing on “Balkan Music and Dance”. This
issue is dedicated to our dear and respected colleague, Prof. Dr. Selena Rakočević (1971–2022). It encompasses 12
valuable contributions from the fields of ethnochoreology, ethnomusicology, and musicology, all of which delve into
themes significant to the music and dance of Southeast Europe. As many as 8 of the 12 contributions relate to a
bilateral scientific cooperation project with which Selena Rakočević was also associated: Exploring the Tracks of
Balkan Culture: Serbian–Turkish Connections in Music and Dance from Ottoman Period until Today (TRackeRS). In
editing this special issue of the journal, project leaders have attempted to highlight the connections and adaptations
of music and dance forms originating from these two present-day countries as well as the legacies received by ethnic
communities from related former countries such as the Ottoman Empire and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

AB - In the conclusion of his ambitious, iconoclastic, for time when it was created (1968) unique study Time of Art, Dragutin Gostuški wrote: “Having conquered real spatial dimensions, music still has only one imaginary direction of movement in the past-present-future system. We should therefore expect with full certainty that (...) only future kinetic music will completely conquer the fourth dimension in the realm of tones”. His obsession with the fourth dimension urged Gostuški to observe that music “has always been most closely connected with theoretical physics and its practical implementation”. Gostuški’s speculations about acoustic micro-waves and the direct effect of rhythmic intervals on nerve impulses, which could produce a narcotic effect, probably seemed to his contemporaries, to say the least, unusual – and today they can be read as visionary. On this occasion, I wish to connect Gostuški’s thoughts on kinetic music with the Quantum Music project, on which I worked for seven full years (2015–2022) with a team of collaborators from Serbia and abroad, and try to discover analogies between Gostuški’s visions and our results.

In the conclusion of his ambitious, iconoclastic, for time when it was created (1968) unique study Time of Art, Dragutin Gostuški wrote: “Having conquered real spatial dimensions, music still has only one imaginary direction of movement in the past-present-future system. On this occasion, I wish to connect Gostuški’s thoughts on kinetic music with the Quantum Music project, on which I worked for seven full years (2015–2022) with a team of collaborators from Serbia and abroad, and try to discover analogies between Gostuški’s visions and our results.",

AB - The title of my article is a paraphrase of the title of the book Irony, Satire, Parody and Grotesque in the Music of Dmitri Shostakovich: A Theory of Musical Incongruities by Israeli-American author Esti Sheinberg. Although Sheinberg’s theory, firmly rooted in musical semiotics, has so far found little application beyond this book, it is important as the second and the most comprehensive scholarly attempt at systematising Shostakovich’s musical symbolism. The first such attempt was Eric Roseberry’s Ph.D. dissertation, later published as a monograph Ideology, Style, Content, and Thematic Process in the Symphonies, Cello Concertos, and String Quartets of Shostakovich in which he undertook the task of creating a ‘dictionary’ of Shostakovich’s musical utterances, based on a study of his instrumental music. Sheinberg, on the other hand, discusses a variety of Shostakovich’s works and aims to classify and analyse his narrative strategies and in particular, various facets of musical humour in his oeuvre, thus laying the foundation for a new and potentially fruitful approach not only to the music of Shostakovich, but also of his numerous Soviet peers.

AB - In this paper, we study the pro-drop parameter in the subject position in English speakers of Serbian as heritage language. The aim of the paper is to determine whether and under what circumstances speakers omit the subject expressed by a personal pronoun in a sentence. Since the Serbian language is a pro-drop language, i.e. it is characterized by the omission of the subject, and in English the use of the subject is obligatory, we expected that, due to linguistic transfer, speakers would hyperproduce personal pronouns as subjects. The participants are elementary and high schoolers and the control group are monolinguals of the same age. The research showed that in direct answers to questions as well as clauses with action verbs, heritage speakers do not use pro-drop more often than monolinguals, but that this is generally a stable parameter in their language, and that there are no non-pragmatic uses of pro-drop.

AB - The paper studies the manipulative power of language in political discourse, more precisely, in political speech. According to the classification of Mišić Ilić and Radulović (2015), which is based on the combination of Austin (1962) and Searle’s (2001) theories, commissives and expressives were studied in a speech given by Aleksandar Vučić, held in Kosovska Mitrovica on September 9, 2018. The aim of the paper is to show the power of language to manipulate the listener, through the strategic use of these two speech acts, which would illustrate an ideological contrast: concealing the speaker’s flaws, as well as their personal responsibility and involvement, while emphasizing the positive aspects of everything the speaker stands for. Speech acts are classified according to their explicit and implicit forms. The results show that implicit forms are more dominant, and at the same time they illustrate how the speaker dissociates from directly taking responsibility for the actions he commits to. Explicit forms, on the other hand, can only be interpreted in the wider context of the utterance, in which the speaker commits to taking insufficiently concrete action.

AB - The present research aims to address the case study about the Serbian copyist anagnost Ioan through the use of the web-based repository. The same scribe's signature is observed in the manuscripts Dečani № 127 and № 119, which are also connected by the typology and a similar dating. The goal is to compare the distinctive features of both manuscripts and the handwriting of the 14th century scribes who contributed to the copying. In conducting this research, we will use a new descriptive scientific model, created and tested by the research project team.

AB - The article analyzes the main directions in the selection and classification of types
of religious journalism text. In the course of the analysis, it was found that religious journalism
actively borrows and creatively reworks such traditional types of texts as an article, interview, note,
etc. At the same time, religious journalism actively uses the types of texts characteristic of religious
oratory – sermon, exegetical commentary, etc.
