Nanomechanical properties of PVDF–ZnO polymer nanocomposite

AB  - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.

UV radiation in Novi Sad (Serbia): UV Index monitoring and variability of high erythemal UV radiation doses

AB  - The UV monitoring in Novi Sad has been in operation by broadband Yankee UVB-1 biometer at the campus of the University of Novi Sad (45.33° N, 19.85° E, 84 m above sea level) since 2003. Data of UV index are taken every 30 s, averaged over 10 min intervals, and automatically saved in the database. The time series were reconstructed using an improved reconstruction technique that is based on parametric numerical model NEOPLANTA calculations of erythemal radiation and the empirical relationship between the erythemal doses and sunshine duration. In this study, we presented the maximum daily UV index values over the period 2003-2018 and the variability of reconstructed high erythemal UV doses (hUVery) over the period 1971-2018. Additionally, the influence of low total ozone column (TOC), low cloud cover conditions, and high surface albedo on hUVery was analyzed on a seasonal basis. 
Analyzing the measurements we concluded that maximum daily values are almost the same in the period of sixteen years, in the summer months maximum values are about 9. Based on the 90th percentile of each month we assessed a set of 1691 days with hUVery (10.65 %). The fraction of hUVery days in the last two decades was considerably larger (12.29%) than in the period before (6.97%) and during (8.68%) TOC depletion. We observed a statistically significant increase in the annual number of days with hUVery of +6.26 days/decade (p<0.01). The increase was statistically significant in all seasons, except winter, while it was the most pronounced in summer (+2.44 days/decade, p<0.01).  However, the increase was not uniform over the entire observation period. Over the period of TOC depletion (1971-1980), the number of days with hUVery decreased, followed by a steep significant increase over the period of TOC depletion (1981-1996) of +16.75 days per decade (p<0.05). After 1996 hUVery increased slowly (+3.19 days/decade), but the trend was not statistically significant. Considering the influence of each UV affecting factor separately, the analysis showed that low cloud cover had slightly more influence on the occurrence of hUVery days than TOC in all seasons except winter. Of the total number of hUVery days, 89.47% were recorded when the cloud cover was low, while 80.65% of hUVery were recorded when the TOC was low.  However, the most frequent reason for hUVery is the combination of these two factors (75% of all hUVery days). In the winter season-high surface albedo influenced the appearance of 18.26% of hUVery days.
It is important to emphasize that we analyzed the reconstructed erythemal doses, not the measured data. Reconstructed data (implying the quality of the reconstruction) provide valuable resources for insight into UV variability in the past although cannot replace measurements. The results indicate even if the TOC recovers in the 21st century as expected, the appearance of days with high erythemal doses will still be significantly affected by future changes in the cloud cover.

Among the themes that she investigated during her illustrious career, Romanou led a project dedicated to the connections between Serbian and Greek music(s) throughout the centuries. Papers in this session concentrate on topics initiated by Romanou, including the interaction between music and politics, changing borders in Southeast Europe, the activities of music institutions in such conditions, and the efforts of Serbian musicians to catch up with the West.

AB  - In this paper, a method previously developed for reconstructing daily
erythemal ultraviolet (UVery) doses in Novi Sad (Serbia) was improved and
used for estimating daily UVery over the period 1971–2018. The proposed
new method uses reanalysed total ozone column (TOC) data and snow
cover as an input and is based on the empirical relationship between relative sunshine duration and relative UVery doses. Introducing reanalysed
TOC data and snow cover data significantly improved the quality and accuracy of the reconstructed UVery time series, particularly in the winter season. The reconstructed time series revealed the statistically significant
increase in summer and winter UVery in the 1980s and the first half of the
1990s (+8.78% and + 13.14% per decade, respectively), which was linked to
the statistically significant decline in TOC (−4.13 and −7.36% per decade,
respectively). The study focuses on days with high erythemal UV dose

traditional songs of other nations in Serbia.

of records of military orchestras was far greater than mentioned in the
literature. On this occasion, it is important to highlight that military
ensembles recorded not only military music, but also traditional, folk
and art music, which sheds a new light on the participation of military
orchestras in shaping cultural identities.

AB  - This paper aims to present the digitization process of a very important piece of Serbian intangible cultural heritage, Српске народне
пословице и друге различне као оне у обичаj узете риjечи (Engl. Serbian folk proverbs), compiled by Vuk Stefanovi´c Karadˇzi´c
during the first half of the 19th century. In the paper, we discuss the necessary steps in the digitization process, the challenges we had
to deal with as well as the solutions we came up with. The goal of this process is to have a fully digitized, user-friendly version of
Serbian folk proverbs, that will also easily integrate and be compatible with other digitized resources and/or multi-dictionary portals.

During pregnancy, a low Se status can increase the risk of oxidative stress. However, elevated concentrations of Se in the body can also cause oxidative stress. This study aimed to compare the effects of BSA-stabilized Se nanoparticles (SeNPs, Se0) (BSA-bovine serum albumin) and inorganic sodium selenite (NaSe, Se+4) supplementation on the histological structure of the placenta, oxidative stress parameters and the total placental Se concentration of Wistar rats during pregnancy. Pregnant females were randomized into four groups: (i) intact controls; (ii) controls that were dosed by daily oral gavage with 8.6% bovine serum albumin (BSA) and 0.125 M vit C; (iii) the SeNP group that was administered 0.5 mg of SeNPs stabilized with 8.6% BSA and 0.125 M vit C/kg bw/day by oral gavage dosing; (iv) the NaSe group, gavage dosed with 0.5 mg Na2SeO3/kg bw/day. The treatment of pregnant females started on gestational day one, lasted until day 20, and on day 21 of gestation, the fetuses with the placenta were removed from the uterus. Our findings show that the mode of action of equivalent concentrations of Se in SeNPs and NaSe depended on its redox state and chemical structure. Administration of SeNPs (Se0) increased fetal lethality and induced changes in the antioxidative defense parameters in the placenta. The accumulation of Se in the placenta was highest in SeNP-treated animals. All obtained data indicate an increased bioavailability of Se in its organic nano form and Se0 redox state in comparison to its inorganic sodium selenite form and Se+4 redox state.

AB  - Photovoltaic silicon converts sunlight in 95% of the operational commercial solar cells and has the potential to become a leading material in harvesting energy from renewable sources, but silicon can hardly convert clean energy due to technologies required for its reduction from sand and further purification. The implementation of the novel materials into photovoltaic systems depends on their conversion efficiency limited by the material's inherent properties, longevity dependent on internal stability, and ease of manufacturing process. A major challenge is discovering a multilayered set of different photovoltaic materials capable of converting clean energy from a wider spectra range since emerging materials and technologies such as dye-sensitized and quantum dots suffer from low conversion efficiencies while perovskite and organic cells have short longevity in atmospheric conditions. Presently, improving technologies for commercialized materials and creating multijunction solar cells enhanced by new photovoltaic materials is a path toward cleaner energies. With the rapid development of the integrative technologies and challenges that photovoltaics for clean energy conversion are facing, the entire clean photovoltaic industry could arise by bottom-up course as a part of integrative technologies rather than erecting large power plants.

AB  - Earth-abundant, cheap and non-toxic zinc-based coordination compounds are drawing research attention as promising candidates for various applications, such as photoluminescent materials and anticancer agents. In this paper we report six zinc complexes (1–3-NO3 and 1–3-Cl) with pyridyl-based thiazolyl–hydrazone ligands, which differ in the nature of substituents at the ligands' periphery, anion type, and geometry around the metal ion. The complexes were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, as well as IR and NMR spectroscopy. The symmetrical complexes 2-Cl and 3-Cl, where zinc atoms are located at a two-fold axis, do not exhibit photophysical properties, unlike their asymmetrical analogs 2-NO3 and 3-NO3 with the same complex cation. Asymmetrical pentacoordinated 1-Cl and hexacoordinated 1-NO3 complexes exhibit photophysical properties. An admixture of allowed intra-ligand (1IL) and chloro (X)-to-ligand charge-transfer (1XLCT) electronic transitions is responsible for the fluorescence of the 1-Cl complex. The origin of the emission of the 1-NO3 complex is ascribed to an admixture of 3IL and ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (3LLCT) forbidden electronic transitions, while for 3-NO3 most electronic excitations are of LLCT character. The thermal stability of the complexes is in accord with the strength of respective intermolecular interactions. The antiproliferative activity of the complexes was in the nanomolar range on some of the investigated cancer cell lines. Contrary to the increase of antiproliferative activity of the complexes in comparison to the free ligands in cancer cell lines, an acute toxicity determined in the brine shrimp assay follows the opposite trend. The overall results suggest that Zn(II) thiazoyl–hydrazone complexes have considerable potential as multifunctional materials.

One must consider various factors such as characteristics of the period, genre, politics, sociological questions, compositional techniques, etc. In other words, to understand the relation between a piece of music and the context in which it was created means to understand a complex web created by all the aforementioned factors. These aspects are particularly important when attempting to place a certain local composer into a broader, European context, or when considering ‘national’ and ‘international’ characteristics of a certain piece, style, etc. This article deals with works of a Belgrade-born Yugoslav/Serbian composer Stanojlo Rajičić (1910–2000) composed in the second half of the twentieth century, such as song cycle for voice and orchestra Magnovenja,(Quick Moments), 1964, or Variations for Orchestra, 1979. In these works, there is a significant amount of paraphrased (Meyer, Music, the Arts and Ideas: Patterns and Predictions in 20th-Century Culture, The University of Chicago Press, Chicago and London, 1967: 195– 207) music material (to be precise, of symphonic works by Gustav Mahler [1860– 1911]). Considering the author’s avant-garde tendencies in the interwar period, as well as his post-World War II stylistic change in the context of the newly established Socialist, classless society and Rajičić’s high positioning in the most significant public institutions, several questions come to mind: Why are there references to other composers’ music in Rajičić's works and how are they integrated into his individual style? Furthermore, is there a connection between these works and society in general? How do they fit in the society and the context that he was working in?

AB  - The aim of this paper is to present the results of our research on the knowledge and awareness of visitors and residents about karst and protected areas (PAs). The research was carried out in the Tara National Park (NP) in western Serbia, which includes karst landscapes. By conducting surveys with visitors, local population, and National Park employees, as well as interviews with local key persons, NP key persons and external experts, we  got  a  deeper  understanding  of  the  issues  related  to  knowledge  on  karst  and  PAs.  We  also  investigated  whether local people or visitors knew the values of karst landscapes in general and how they were informed or learned about the Tara NP. In addition, we also analysed the content of these topics in school curricula and textbooks in Serbia. We concluded that the awareness about the researched topics is unsatisfactory at present thus it should be raised to a higher level, both in the case of local people and in the case of visitors. One of the most significant ways to improve the current level is through formal, non-formal, and informal education.

In addition, we also analysed the content of these topics in school curricula and textbooks in Serbia. We concluded that the awareness about the researched topics is unsatisfactory at present thus it should be raised to a higher level, both in the case of local people and in the case of visitors. One of the most significant ways to improve the current level is through formal, non-formal, and informal education.",

AB  - Influenced by stratospheric total ozone column (TOC), cloud cover, aerosols, albedo, and other factors, levels of daily erythemal dose (H_er) in a specific geographic region show significant variability in time and space. To investigate the degree of randomness and predictability of H_er time series from ground-based observations in Novi Sad, Serbia, during the 2003–2012 time period, we used a set of information measures: Kolmogorov complexity, Kolmogorov complexity spectrum, running Kolmogorov complexity, the largest Lyapunov exponent, Lyapunov time, and Kolmogorov time. The result reveals that fluctuations in daily H_er are moderately random and exhibit low levels of chaotic behavior. We found a larger number of occurrences of deviation from the mean in the time series during the years with lower values of H_er (2007–2009, 2011–2012), which explains the higher complexity. Our analysis indicated that the time series of daily values of H_er show a tendency to increase the randomness when the randomness of cloud cover and TOC increases, which affects the short-term predictability. The prediction horizon of daily H_er values in Novi Sad given by the Lyapunov time corrected for randomness by Kolmogorov is between 1.5 and 3.5 days.

Stakeholders’ Attitudes toward Protected Areas: The Case of Tara National Park (Serbia)

AB  - This paper represents a case study examining attitudes of various stakeholders about Tara National Park (NP) (Serbia), identifying also the factors that shape these attitudes. The survey method was applied to a sample of 405 respondents (197 community members and 208 visitors). In addition, 15 interviews with specific key actors (NP executives and local key persons) were performed. The research confirmed the presence of different types of conflicts among stakeholders, mostly between the NP and the local population (primarily farmers) associated with land use in agriculture and the ban on the construction of facilities. The community recognizes tourism as the highest priority, unlike the NP leaders and visitors, who emphasize protection and conservation (especially biodiversity) as the primary goals of future NP development. The opinions of the local population are divided concerning support for the existence of the NP and the importance of it as a part of the national heritage. Most of them do not recognize the economic benefits resulting from the proclamation of the NP and do not see themselves as participants in the decision-making process. The findings also reveal that visitors strongly support tourism development and activities following the principles of nature protection. This category of respondents is only partly affected by the fact that this area has been declared a NP. The analysis shows that certain socioeconomic factors considerably influence the opinions of both community and visitors. Results suggest that future actions should be aimed at improving the coordination of various stakeholders, especially the NP and the community, through different social mobilization activities. Stimulating small businesses and providing incentives for agriculture and nature tourism development could be a useful step forward.

другим западнијим српским говорима, те употпунити слику о банијском говору,
који је интегрални дио херцеговачко-крајишког дијалекта.
AB  - This paper analyses the vocal and consonant system in the collection of
poems On the Other Side of the Streak by Jagoda Kljaić. The language in this
literary work is a reflection of the archaic Banija idiom, which is no longer
spoken, and which the poet activates to preserve it from oblivion. The aim
of this paper is to give an overview of the researched linguistic features,
compare them with previous scientific knowledge about this and other
western Serbian dialects, and complete the picture of the Banija dialect
which is an integral part of the Herzegovinian-Krajina dialect.

Geothermal energy in Serbia – Current state, utilization and perspectives

AB  - In the 21st century, many countries are starting to use geothermal energy (GTE) as a new energy source. Serbia also has the potential to use it as a renewable energy source. The complex geological structure of its terrain has given rise to a large number of thermomineral springs and geothermal wells. Based on the existing measurements, the geothermal heat flow density in Serbia ranges from 80 to 120 mW/m2, which is above Europe's average (60 mW/m2). Currently, there are 66 projects in Serbia that directly use geothermal energy. There are an estimated 1005 geothermal heat pump units. Their power varies between 10 kW and 40 kW and they operate for 2860 full load hours per year. This paper deals with the development, current state and perspectives of geothermal energy utilization for heating in Serbia. To illustrate the current state of geothermal energy utilization in Serbia, spa settlements Vranjska Banja and Gornja Trepča, as well as the Bogatić Municipality have been singled out as examples of good practice. The presented analysis includes determining the available amount of geothermal energy and its utilization for district heating or heating of selected public facilities. The concept and methodology of the presented research are based on data collection through literature review, surveys and field research. The analysis confirms the cost-effectiveness of using geothermal energy and reveals numerous ecological advantages over other energy sources. However, it was concluded that аlthough there is potential, geothermal sources, as a renewable energy source, are used negligibly in Serbia.

Document Serving the Conclusion of a Contract and Conveyance of a Right: Interweaving of the Roman and Greek Legal Traditions in Byzantine Private Law

AB  - The purchase contract, often referred to as sale and purchase (πρᾶσις καὶ ἀγορασία) as an illustration of its twofold nature derived from the Roman legal tradition, or simply as sale (πρᾶσις), is suitable for analyzing different legal issues. In light of typical Byzantine document named πρατήριον ἔγγραφον, we aim to define the nature of purchase contract in this medieval legal system. Diplomatic formulae contain data about consensus of contractual parties, as well as the fact that a document was drafted “for security”, which raises the question of solemnity of this contract. The role the deed has is also discussed in the paper, as in some cases it is uncertain whether the composition and delivery of the document also implied the passing of title. Applied methodological approach takes into account the linguistic interpretation of documentary clauses and legal provisions in codes, and relies on comparative-historical method.
AB  - Kupoprodajni ugovor, u grčkim dokumentima nazvan πρᾶσις καὶ ἀγορασία, prema svojoj dvostrukoj prirodi, ili samo πρᾶσις, prigodan je za analizu različitih pravnih pitanja. Istražujući vizantijski tipski dokument πρατήριον ἔγγραφον u radu želimo da istražimo prirodu kupoprodajnog ugovora u tom pravnom sistemu. Diplomatičke formule sadrže podatke o saglasnosti volja ugovornih strana, kao i frazu da je dokument sastavljen „radi sigurnosti”, što dovodi u pitanje formalnost tog pravnog posla. U radu je takođe razmatrana uloga dokumenta u sticanju, odnosno prenosu stvarnog prava, s obzirom na to da je sporno da li sastavljanje i predaja dokumenta impliciraju i te radnje. Metodološki pristup podrazumeva jezičko tumačenje klauzula i tipiziranih diplomatičkih formula u dokumentima, kao i odredaba u pravnim zbirkama, koje dopunjuje komparativno-istorijski metod.

Diplomatičke formule sadrže podatke o saglasnosti volja ugovornih strana, kao i frazu da je dokument sastavljen „radi sigurnosti”, što dovodi u pitanje formalnost tog pravnog posla. U radu je takođe razmatrana uloga dokumenta u sticanju, odnosno prenosu stvarnog prava, s obzirom na to da je sporno da li sastavljanje i predaja dokumenta impliciraju i te radnje. Metodološki pristup podrazumeva jezičko tumačenje klauzula i tipiziranih diplomatičkih formula u dokumentima, kao i odredaba u pravnim zbirkama, koje dopunjuje komparativno-istorijski metod.",

Methods and Results: Chequerboard and time-kill assays were employed to ex- plore the potential synergistic interactions between colistin and SeNPs against Ac. baumannii isolates (8), previously determined as colistin-resistant (MIC range 16– 256 μg ml−1 ). Also, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and gene expression analyses were used to elucidate the mechanisms of colistin resistance. Exceptionally strong synergistic activity (FICI range 0.004–0.035) of colistin and SeNPs against colistin- resistant isolates was revealed. Colistin (0.5 or 1 μg ml −1 ) used in combination with SeNPs (0.5 μg ml−1 ) was able to reduce initial inoculum during the first 4 h of incuba- tion, in contrast to colistin (0.5, 1 or 2 μg ml−1 ) alone. Conclusions: These findings propose colistin/SeNPs combination as a new option to fight PDR Ac. baumannii, the therapeutic possibilities of which should be proved in future in vivo studies. Significance and Impact of Study: Here we present the first evidence of synergy between colistin and selenium compounds against bacteria in general. Also, WGS and gene expression analyses provide some new insights into Ac. baumannii colistin resistance mechanisms.

AB  - An emerging technology of active packaging enables prolongation of food shelf life by limiting the oxygen transfer and the reactivity of free radicals, which both destruct food freshness. In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.
