UV radiation in Novi Sad (Serbia): UV Index monitoring and variability of high erythemal UV radiation doses

AB  - The UV monitoring in Novi Sad has been in operation by broadband Yankee UVB-1 biometer at the campus of the University of Novi Sad (45.33° N, 19.85° E, 84 m above sea level) since 2003. Data of UV index are taken every 30 s, averaged over 10 min intervals, and automatically saved in the database. The time series were reconstructed using an improved reconstruction technique that is based on parametric numerical model NEOPLANTA calculations of erythemal radiation and the empirical relationship between the erythemal doses and sunshine duration. In this study, we presented the maximum daily UV index values over the period 2003-2018 and the variability of reconstructed high erythemal UV doses (hUVery) over the period 1971-2018. Additionally, the influence of low total ozone column (TOC), low cloud cover conditions, and high surface albedo on hUVery was analyzed on a seasonal basis. 
Analyzing the measurements we concluded that maximum daily values are almost the same in the period of sixteen years, in the summer months maximum values are about 9. Based on the 90th percentile of each month we assessed a set of 1691 days with hUVery (10.65 %). The fraction of hUVery days in the last two decades was considerably larger (12.29%) than in the period before (6.97%) and during (8.68%) TOC depletion. We observed a statistically significant increase in the annual number of days with hUVery of +6.26 days/decade (p<0.01). The increase was statistically significant in all seasons, except winter, while it was the most pronounced in summer (+2.44 days/decade, p<0.01).  However, the increase was not uniform over the entire observation period. Over the period of TOC depletion (1971-1980), the number of days with hUVery decreased, followed by a steep significant increase over the period of TOC depletion (1981-1996) of +16.75 days per decade (p<0.05). After 1996 hUVery increased slowly (+3.19 days/decade), but the trend was not statistically significant. Considering the influence of each UV affecting factor separately, the analysis showed that low cloud cover had slightly more influence on the occurrence of hUVery days than TOC in all seasons except winter. Of the total number of hUVery days, 89.47% were recorded when the cloud cover was low, while 80.65% of hUVery were recorded when the TOC was low.  However, the most frequent reason for hUVery is the combination of these two factors (75% of all hUVery days). In the winter season-high surface albedo influenced the appearance of 18.26% of hUVery days.
It is important to emphasize that we analyzed the reconstructed erythemal doses, not the measured data. Reconstructed data (implying the quality of the reconstruction) provide valuable resources for insight into UV variability in the past although cannot replace measurements. The results indicate even if the TOC recovers in the 21st century as expected, the appearance of days with high erythemal doses will still be significantly affected by future changes in the cloud cover.

Papers in this session concentrate on topics initiated by Romanou, including the interaction between music and politics, changing borders in Southeast Europe, the activities of music institutions in such conditions, and the efforts of Serbian musicians to catch up with the West.

AB  - In this paper, a method previously developed for reconstructing daily
erythemal ultraviolet (UVery) doses in Novi Sad (Serbia) was improved and
used for estimating daily UVery over the period 1971–2018. The proposed
new method uses reanalysed total ozone column (TOC) data and snow
cover as an input and is based on the empirical relationship between relative sunshine duration and relative UVery doses. Introducing reanalysed
TOC data and snow cover data significantly improved the quality and accuracy of the reconstructed UVery time series, particularly in the winter season. The reconstructed time series revealed the statistically significant

the statistically significant decline in TOC (−4.13 and −7.36% per decade,

2004). It is focused on experience gained through long-term practical
ethnomusicological work in the sphere of mediation of traditional songs
in contemporary times, that is: teaching pupils Serbian traditional songs

traditional songs of other nations in Serbia.

AB  - Recent research on early discography has revealed that the production
of records of military orchestras was far greater than mentioned in the
literature. On this occasion, it is important to highlight that military
ensembles recorded not only military music, but also traditional, folk
and art music, which sheds a new light on the participation of military
orchestras in shaping cultural identities.

AB  - Грађа за израду Речника САНУ осавремењује се, редовно, по утврђеним процеду-
рама, ексцерпцијом примера из текстова савремених стваралаца. У корпус се укључују
писци чија дела имају високу уметничку вредност, а притом се води рачуна о томе да
писци потичу из различитих крајева српског језичког простора, да дела буду жанровски
и тематски различита итд., како би се могле пратити тенденције у граматици и показати
лексичко богатство, лексичка раслојеност и лексички потенцијал. Приликом последње
допуне у изворе за Речник САНУ уврштен је роман Једро наде Н. Маловића. У раду ће се
анализирати лексичка раслојеност с обзиром на то да је реч о писцу ијекавцу, из примор-
ских крајева, у чијем се роману, са различитих аспеката посматрано, преплићу локално,
рустично и модерно.
AB  - The novel “Jedro nade” by N. Malović was included in corpus of SASA Dictionary during the last
restoring the source. The paper analyzes the lexicon given in novel, whose writer is from Montenegro, from
coastal region. There are lexicon of domestic origin, and a lot og internationalisms, especially regionalisms
of romance origin.

AB  - Фокус монографије је на контактним феноменима у гурбетском варијетету ромског којим се
говори у источној Србији (у Књажевцу и Минићеву). Прва студија анализира балканизме – језичке црте које су се у ромском развиле или очувале под утицајем вишевековног контакта са балканским језицима и варијететима. Друга студија истражује позајмљенице из савременог српског језика и начин њихове адаптације у ромски морфолошки систем. Балканизми и позајмљенице анализирани су у пресеку двеју генерација говорника. Илустровани су бројним примерима из грађе књажевачког гурбетског варијетета, прикупљене теренским истраживањима у периоду од 2016. до 2018. године.
AB  - The aim of this monograph is to explore the Gurbet Romani variety spoken 
in Eastern Serbia from a contact linguistics perspective, taking a corpus based approach. The focus is on two contact phenomena developed at different 
language levels in different time periods, namely morpho-syntactic Balkanisms 
and Serbian loanwords. Although there are numerous linguistic studies on 
Gurbet Romani, the area of Eastern Serbia – the town of Knjaževac and its 
surroundings, where this variety is also spoken, has not been documented or 
investigated in Romani linguistics yet.

study, through

annotation.

study, the bibliography
also contains
data on its first publication

the Južnoslovenski
filolog
journal

bibliographic
units which refer
to printed
(critical)
accounts
of the study, as well as those
units that shed more light on the

work of its author.

Kolmogorov Complexity Analysis and Prediction Horizon of the Daily Erythemal Dose Time Series

AB  - Influenced by stratospheric total ozone column (TOC), cloud cover, aerosols, albedo, and other factors, levels of daily erythemal dose (H_er) in a specific geographic region show significant variability in time and space. To investigate the degree of randomness and predictability of H_er time series from ground-based observations in Novi Sad, Serbia, during the 2003–2012 time period, we used a set of information measures: Kolmogorov complexity, Kolmogorov complexity spectrum, running Kolmogorov complexity, the largest Lyapunov exponent, Lyapunov time, and Kolmogorov time. The result reveals that fluctuations in daily H_er are moderately random and exhibit low levels of chaotic behavior. We found a larger number of occurrences of deviation from the mean in the time series during the years with lower values of H_er (2007–2009, 2011–2012), which explains the higher complexity. Our analysis indicated that the time series of daily values of H_er show a tendency to increase the randomness when the randomness of cloud cover and TOC increases, which affects the short-term predictability. The prediction horizon of daily H_er values in Novi Sad given by the Lyapunov time corrected for randomness by Kolmogorov is between 1.5 and 3.5 days.

AB  - The parametric model NEOPLANTA was used to study the effects of various
atmospheric conditions on terrestrial spectral UV irradiance. The capability of the model to correctly reproduce processes in the atmosphere is tested by changing input parameters such as ozone content, solar zenith angle, amount and type of aerosols, and altitude. AB  - This study has analyzed the traffic-related change in atmospheric pollutants levels (PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, SO2, and O3) caused by the COVID-19 restrictive measures, based on traffic ground-based stations data in urban areas in Serbia. The possible influence of several meteorological factors (temperature, wind, pressure, and humidity), and mobility on the pollutants’ levels were also considered. The obtained results showed a positive correlation of daily NO2 concentrations with mobility and its significant reduction during restrictive measures at all selected monitoring stations. The reduction of NO2 was higher than in other countries (71.1–111.5% for measured, and 49.3–92.6% for ‘deweathered’ data), indicating a high traffic impact on NO2 levels in Serbia. The PM, CO, and SO2 showed a weak correlation with mobility during the period with restrictive measures, which, besides traffic, indicates the significant influence of other sources of their concentration. The O3 concentrations were increased at all measuring stations and are negatively correlated to mobility. Comparison of pollutant concentrations during restriction with the equivalent period in preceding years showed reductions in NO2 and SO2 concentrations. However, compared to previous years, the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and CO increased in the period with restrictive measures, indicating lower sensitivity to population mobility and higher dependence on other emission sources. The findings suggest the justification for the use of traffic reduction strategies to improve air quality.

Health risks of extended exposure to low-level UV radiation – An analysis of ground-based and satellite-derived data

AB  - This study aims to indicate the importance of revising current health recommendations concerning the duration of exposure and individual sensitivity of the skin to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. For this purpose, a 16-year data series (2005–2020) of erythemal radiant exposure (Her) and UV index (UVI) for Serbia was analyzed. The UV-related risk was estimated for lighter skin (skin phototypes I-IV) under prolonged exposure on days when maximum UVI was below the recommended protection threshold (UVIlow days, for UVI < 3). Risk assessment was performed for seasonal exposure using satellite-derived data (OMUVBd product) previously validated by ground-based measurements in Novi Sad. The assessment of harmful effects included an analysis of the relation between the daily maximum UVI and the corresponding daily Her, the occurrence of UVIlow days, the exceedance of minimal erythema dose (MED), and the minimum duration of exposure to induce erythema (tMED) for all lighter skin phototypes. It was found that the share of UVIlow days in the total number of days in Serbia increases with the latitude, with the highest percentage in winter (up to 69.454%) and the lowest in summer (up to 3.468%). The results show that the daily Her frequently exceeded the harmful threshold for lighter skin phototypes I-IV (on average by 91.521, 84.923, 70.556, and 56.515%, respectively) on UVIlow days. It was found that prolonged exposure on days with a maximum of UVI = 2 poses a significant risk of erythema for all lighter skin phototypes, even for a duration of 3 h in the middle of the day, as well as medium risk for UVI = 1, and an absence of risk for UVI = 0. The results suggest that health recommendations should be revised, especially in the midlatitudes, where the share of UVIlow days is large, and in areas where the population is predominantly lighter-skinned.

Inclusive by nature, NOSCIs connect stakeholders from across the research lifecycle at the national level and provide not only a testbed for the formulation of OS policies but also a forum for knowledge dissemination and sharing.Drawing on a secondary analysis of the abundant data collected and materials produced during the project, this presentation focuses on the challenges identified as the NOSCIs were built – from data collection in the context of landscaping (Kosanović & Ševkušić, 2019) and policy analysis, through concept development, to implementation, testing, and verification (use cases). It highlights the relationship between individual challenges and NOSCI elements that address these challenges.The challenges are largely owed to diversities within the region, most notably the varying levels of integration into European structures (of the 15 partner countries, eight are not EU members), linguistic diversity, different research governance systems, policy traditions, and available funding. The framework for NOSCI development, the so-called blueprint (Toli et al., 2020), was designed in full recognition of these diversities. Inclusive by nature, NOSCIs connect stakeholders from across the research lifecycle at the national level and provide not only a testbed for the formulation of OS policies but also a forum for knowledge dissemination and sharing.
Drawing on a secondary analysis of the abundant data collected and materials produced during the project, this presentation focuses on the challenges identified as the NOSCIs were built – from data collection in the context of landscaping (Kosanović & Ševkušić, 2019) and policy analysis, through concept development, to implementation, testing, and verification (use cases). It highlights the relationship between individual challenges and NOSCI elements that address these challenges.
The challenges are largely owed to diversities within the region, most notably the varying levels of integration into European structures (of the 15 partner countries, eight are not EU members), linguistic diversity, different research governance systems, policy traditions, and available funding. The framework for NOSCI development, the so-called blueprint (Toli et al., 2020), was designed in full recognition of these diversities. It relies on three modular workflows (Toli et al., 2021) and gives maximum flexibility to countries or national initiatives while making sure that all locally specific aspects are addressed.

We believe that the approach adopted by the NI4OS-Europe team could be applied in other highlydiversified environments, as has been demonstrated by the NI4OS-Europe use cases, thanks to the flexible mechanism of interaction between challenges and responses underlying the very concept of NOSCI.",

Challenges in Sustainable Use of Lithium for Highly Innovative Final Products Created and Made in Serbia with EU Environmental Standards

AB  - Energy systems of the future should enable transition to clean energy and reduction of CO2 emission. Various options are under consideration and research. One direction of development are photovoltaic, and rechargeable batteries used to store the electricity needed for vehicles and stationary systems (1,2). At the current technological level and market attractiveness among rechargeable batteries significant group are those based on lithium. EU production of raw materials for all batteries is about 1%. Growing demand for lithium are expected in 2050 to be 10-50 times higher than 2018. A lithium deficit in the market is expected (3,4). The companies are searching new locations for lithium mining and production facilities in order to compensate for the deficit.The mineral named Jadarit found in Serbia, contains lithium, sodium, boron and silica. Estimated reserves of Jadarit are of low significance for World production of lithium, but may be significant at EU level and for Serbian economy. Certain companies are interested to enter the production chain from Jadarit. These companies present the possibility for future industrial battery development in Serbia, which may lead innovative final products. They claim optimistic 3-15% increase of GDP (5). Public debate provided argumented shortcomings of currently proposed technology for lithium extraction from Jadarit (6). Major concerns are regarding permanent devastation of lush ecosystem, fertile soil, drinking water, air pollution. These non-monetary assets and their contribution to GDP should be monetized as sine qua non for objective cost-benefit analysis. Therefore, instead of polarization, public debate that identifies key critical points in technology of lithium extraction and its effects on human health and environment provides basis for future research that will develop new technologies capable to protect environment.

Odlike migracionih procesa na prostoru Kosova i Metohije od početka 20. veka do danas

AB  - U dugom istorijskom periodu prostor Kosova i Metohije obeležili su dinamični kulturni, politički, socijalni, demografski i migracioni procesi. Važna odrednica u svim etapama jesu izrazite promene etničke strukture stanovništva. Tokom srednjeg veka ovaj prostor je bio sedište i etnički homogen deo srpske države sa svega 2–3% Albanaca. Viševekovnom turskom vladavinom, od sredine 15. veka, usled islamizacije i iseljavanja, etnička struktura ove oblasti suštinski je izmenjena. Početkom 20. veka Srbi su činili 20% ukupne populacije. Usledili su Balkanski ratovi, Prvi svetski rat i uključivanje ove teritorije u sastav Kraljevine SHS. Za međuratni period karakteristične su imigracione mere kojima je država težila da ublaži nepovoljan odnos dveju etničkih grupa. Doseljeno je 60.000–65.000 kolonista iz „pasivnih“ krajeva, većinom Srba, ali i drugih grupa (Crnogorci, Hrvati, Slovenci, Vlasi i sl.). Rezultati ovih mera narušeni su već u Drugom svetskom ratu, kada je okupacijom od strane Nemačke i pridruženih država (Italija, Albanija i Bugarska), proterano više desetina hiljada Srba i Crnogoraca. U socijalističkoj Jugoslaviji nizom zakonskih rešenja (1945. i 1959. godine) i ustavnim aktima (1963. i 1974. godine), Kosovo i Metohija dobija široku autonomiju. Pravni pritisak i otežani životni uslovi uticali su na dalju emigraciju srpske populacije. Stanje je dodatno pogoršano političko-društvenim faktorima, a zatim i vojno-bezbednosnim akcijama krajem 1990-ih i početkom 2000-ih godina. Takvi trendovi imaju kontinuitet do danas. Prostor Kosova i Metohije je ostao bez autohtonog srpskog stanovništva, dok je povratak interno raseljenih lica na zanemarljivom nivou. Kao rezultat ovih procesa, Srbi su 2020. godine činili manje od 5% stanovništva Kosova i Metohije.
