AB - This research is devoted to the determination of hidden dependencies between the flow of particles that come from the Sun and precipitation-induced floods in the United Kingdom (UK). The analysis covers 20 flood events during the period from October 2001 to December 2019. The parameters of solar activity were used as model input data, while precipitations data in the period 10 days before and during each flood event were used as model output. The time lag of 0–9 days was taken into account in the research. Correlation analysis was conducted to determine the degree of randomness for the time series of input and output parameters. For establishing a potential causative link, machine learning classification predictive modeling was applied. Two approaches, the decision tree, and the random forest were used. We analyzed the accuracy of classification models forecast from 0 to 9 days in advance. It was found that the most important factors for flood forecasting are proton density with a time lag of 9, differential proton flux in the range of 310–580 keV, and ion temperature. Research in this paper has shown that the decision tree model is more accurate and adequate in predicting the appearance of precipitation-induced floods up to 9 days ahead with an accuracy of 91%. The results of this study confirmed that by increasing technical capabilities, using improved machine learning techniques and large data sets, it is possible to improve the understanding of the physical link between the solar wind and tropospheric weather and help improve severe weather forecasting.

AB - In 1993, Serbian composer and radio artist Ivana Stefanović created Lacrimosa for the Vienna program Kunstradio – Radiokunst. Stefanović states that she was deeply upset and agitated after hearing the recording of a mother from Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) speaking about her three sons and the horrors of the Balkan wars. In this paper, I suggest discussing how the idea of wailing and lamenting was artistically reimagined, reinterpreted and explored in an art form that relies on collage, montage and cultural references through music, poetry and field recordings. The sound recording of a wailing mother is interwoven with classical music, recordings of Muslim and Eastern Orthodox prayers, Sephardi Jewish song and poetry. This variety underlines the idea of universality of grief in different religions and cultures. Excerpts from Lacrimosa compositions from the Western classical music tradition, as well as the reading of the poem Lament over Belgrade by Miloš Crnjanski, also bring forward past artistic interpretations of lament. Finally, public outcry was included in the form of field recordings of antiwar protests in Sarajevo and Belgrade. The author suggests that because of the recording of antiwar protests, combined with other mentioned materials, the composition could be understood as a wail of two cities in shared rage and grief opposing divisive nationalistic politics that lead to exiled and displaced people as the inevitable outcome of war.

AB - There are several reasons why we decided to dedicate this double issue of Contemporary
Music Review to the topic of Serbian musical identity. The concept of identity
implies the existence of some individual or collective characteristic, or a feature, by
which a certain person or social group is recognisable. Both ‘musical identity’ and
‘national identity’ are elusive, flexible, changeable, and context-dependent notions.
The articles published in this issue help us consider whether, when, and under
what conditions these two types of identities intersect and what type of musical
works emerge from such overlaps.

AB - Novel cotton-based TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nanocomposites for wastewater treatment were developed by fine chemical synthesis path with the goal of coping with wastewater issues and environmental remediation. The photocatalytic performances of nanocomposites were tested during photodegradation processes of RB, AO7 and MR under simulated solar light. Double- and single-loaded nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple bottom-up approach implying in situ photoreduction of Ag+ ions on the surface of TiO2 NPs previously deposited on cotton fibers from colloids. The spherical-like colloidal TiO2 NPs (4.5 nm) and TiO2/Ag NPs (8 nm) and the formation of uniform TiO2/Ag and TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nano-coatings on cotton fibers were examined by TEM and FESEM. The reduction of Ag+ ions on TiO2 surface was undoubtedly proven by the appearance of SPR band of Ag NPs in UV/Vis spectra. Raman spectroscopy clearly confirmed the presence of anatase TiO2 in nanocomposites. Quantitative determination of TiO2 and Ag in nanocomposites was accomplished using EDX and ICP–OES. The cotton-based TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency (> 90%) and maintained its removal efficiency after three reuse cycles, indicated its exceptional photochemical ability. The initial idea of improved photocatalytic performances of a TiO2 NPs double-layer with immobilized Ag NPs was justified as the TiO2/Ag/TiO2 processed sample contributed additional binding sites for dye molecules. Considering that the photocatalytic activity of the cotton-based TiO2 and TiO2/Ag samples was practically imperceptible, it can be assumed that the synthesized Ag NPs act predominantly as electron traps in the double-loaded synthesized system.

AB - Metal music is known for being, in the words of sociologist Deena Weinstein (2000: 134), a genre primarily designed “(...) of, by, and for males”. Although its foundational postulates, sound and behavior are traditionally seen as masculine, this genre has been also a place for subversion of the masculine and transgression into androgyny and femininity. Since its inception in the 1970s, metal offered a myriad of possibilities for male performers. It is, thus, not surprising that during the first several decades of the genre’s development, women were mainly part of the audience or male musicians’ muses. This trend is more noticeably being challenged in the last two decades. Women are taking on not only the role of band vocalists (which is traditionally expected), but also the symbolic leadership as guitarplayersand other instrumentalists. This chapter sheds light on the historical circumstances and characteristics of female leadership in Serbian metal, focusing on the development of metal subgenres and their relationship to women in the local and international context. Since female roles in metal bands are still, by and large, the ones of vocalists, this chapter also gives insights into the development of female voice in metal – from mainstream clean and operatic singing in symphonic metal to the technically extended vocals of extreme metal.

Voice and Body in Extreme Metal Music

AB - Metal subgenres such as, for example, death metal, black metal, doom metal, which are considered as constituents of the “meta-genre” of extreme metal, have built up a very specific sound and imagery during the last several decades. As Keith Kahn-Harris noticed, this cluster of sub-genres gathers musical acts of different historical backgrounds and ideologies, which show the highest level of diversity, artistic vibrancy and dynamics, while at the same time being the most problematic area of metal culture in general. The supposed aggression, radicalism, and exclusivity in sound stem not only from the fast, virtuoso, and technically demanding playing of the instruments, but also from the very peculiar vocal emissions. This monstrous voice, which is the result of extended vocal techniques (primarily screams, growls, squeals), is the point of intersection for several issues concerning voice, body, and technology.
In this paper, I will give insight into the key points regarding these questions, while also delving into the issue of gender. For, although metal culture has historically been considered to be male-oriented—and especially so in extreme metal—the noticeable trend of the growing number of female musicians and vocalists in this scene encourages us to further explore who can stand behind the monstrous voice.

AB - Strictly confidential reports from the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs add a new dimension to events in Serbia and Yugoslavia in the second half of the 1960s. According to their content, the strengthening of the autonomy of Kosovo and Metohija was the result of a change in the balance of power at the top of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia after the Brioni Plenum in 1966. Leading Croatian and Slovenian officials held the majority of the party’s control. According to the reports, party leaders Vladimir Bakarić and Edvard Kardelj intended to disintegrate Yugoslavia and allow Croatia and Slovenia to gain independence, and the League of Communists of Yugoslavia’s Kosovo policy was a key component of that strategy. Leader of Kosovo Albanians Fadilj Hoxha gained complete control of the province’s party, judicial, and se curity apparatuses thanks to the political support he received from Broz, Kardelj, and Bakarić. Reports also confirm the emergence of mass emigration of Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija, owing to threatened security and ethnically motivated persecution from the province’s companies and institutions. The Al banian population in Kosovo and Metohija developed national euphoria as a result of the new circumstances, which was reflected in public demands for the province's separation from Serbia, the use of the Albanian flag in state institu tions, and the establishment of a special official status for the Albanian lan guage in the province. According to the report, the German intelligence service aimed at the secession of Kosovo and Metohija from Serbia and Yugoslavia and the establishment of another Albanian state in the Balkans.

Legal Aliens: Serbian Composers in Western Europe Today

AB - This article is an extract from my ongoing investigation of the destinies of Serbian
composers who have emigrated since the early 1990s, a period that was marked by the
dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the ensuing wars when
hundreds of thousands of professionals left the country and settled all over the world.
Such a massive ‘brain drain’ has had a devastating impact on many professional
realms in the entire former-Yugoslav region. Thus far, I have located more than
seventy Serbian composers who currently live and work abroad, a significant number
for such a small country. In this article, I focus on the professional and personal
trajectories of several composers who have managed to establish successful careers in
various Western European countries. A recent monograph by Elena Dubinets, Russian
Composers Abroad: How They Left, Stayed, Returned (Bloomington: Indiana
University Press, 2021), serves as my discoursive ‘counterpoint’.

Many of these “words of the year” (such as suffix -ism or different memes) carry certain socio-political, pop-cultural, or even economic backgrounds which is connected to some event or actual social climate. The aim of the work is to examine which units are these and to determine the reasons and motives of their elections or nominations for the word of the year.

AB - Although research on the early Serbian music discography has yet to move past its initial stages, some of the figures of significant influence on Serbian music in the early 20th century can be recognized. Still, the network of traditional music practices, academic art circles and new industries – including the discographic one – has not been illuminated. Among said figures we find singer Mijat Mijatović (1887–1937), whose significance is, formally speaking, reflected in the number of 78 rpm records he produced and, consequently and substantially, in the impact his repertoire and performing style had on the musical culture of his time. In that regard, a collection of seven songs titled “Mijatovke” by Stanislav Binički (1872–1942) are of paradigmatic value. The title suggests the influence Mijatović’s performance of these traditional songs had, while the notes on the records argue for the composer’s authorship. Binički’s position as a conductor of the esteemed King’s Guard Orchestra probably affected the eventual publication of this ensemble’s records of “Mijatovke”. The record’s impact is related to the growing influence of radio, whose programme noticeably included music from the newest records. Simultaneously, “Mijatovke” songs were distributed as a sheet music publication (for voice and piano) by the prominent publisher Geca Kon. Furthermore, songs from this collection were also performed and recorded by other singers. The collaborative effort of ethnomusicology and musicology will here be aimed towards investigating the role record production had in the (trans) formation of popular folk music of that time, as well as its influence on oral tradition and art music, through the analysis of technological and cultural circumstances and recorded performances of “Mijatovke”.

AB - The aim of this work is in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition of a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)/chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) multifunctional hybrid coating decorated with selenium (Se) on a titanium substrate and in vivo investigation of its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. Investigating phenomena at the implant–tissue interface of interest for controlled inflammation and immunomodulation was also the aim of the research. In our earlier research, we designed coatings based on ACP and ChOL on titanium with anticorrosive, antibacterial and biocompatible properties, while in the presented results we show that selenium addition makes this coating an immunomodulator. The immunomodulatory effect of the novel hybrid coating is characterized by the examination of the functional aspects in the tissue around the implant (in vivo): proinflammatory cytokines’ gene expression, M1 (iNOS) and M2 (Arg1) macrophages, fibrous capsule formation (TGF-β) and vascularization (VEGF). The EDS, FTIR and XRD analyses prove the formation of a ACP/ChOL/Se multifunctional hybrid coating on Ti and the presence of Se. A higher M2/M1 macrophage ratio in the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants compared to pure titanium implants (a higher level of Arg1 expression) is noted at all time points examined (after 7, 14 and 28 days). Lower inflammation measured by gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF, lower expression of TGF-β in the surrounding tissue and higher IL-6 expression (solely at day 7 post-implantation) is noted in presence of the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants.

AB - The history of the festivals of art music in socialist Yugoslavia can be traced back to the early
1950s. At that time, in accordance with the policy of raising the level of culture in the country, the role of music festivals was aimed at bringing the classics of art music closer to a wider audience. On the other hand, Yugoslav festivals focused exclusively on contemporary music began to appear a decade later, as a reflection of similar modernist practices in Europe, established immediately after the end of World War II. This doctoral dissertation discusses the genesis, program concepts and initial functioning of the first festivals of contemporary music in Yugoslavia – Music Biennale Zagreb (1961), Annual Review of Yugoslav Music (Opatija, 1962/1964) and Festival of Contemporary Chamber Music Slatina Radenci (1963). From an artistic perspective, these festivals are generators in the process of post-war affirmation of ‘Western’ modernist musical tendencies in Yugoslav space. This is also indicated by the programs of the first Music Biennale Zagreb, in which, for example, the works of John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen were presented. The modernist concept of the Annual Review of Yugoslav Music is confirmed by the fact that this festival originated from the Opatija Symposium New Music and Music Interpretation, which was held in 1962, where the central event was a concert of electroacoustic music. On the other hand, the specific concept of the Festival of Contemporary Chamber Music Slatina Radenci
emphasized the importance of a reaffirmation of interwar modernism in Yugoslavia. In
accordance with that, the works of composers Slavko Osterc and Josip Slavenski were incorporated into the profile of the Festival in Slatina Radenci. Aside from festivals' tendencies, whose common feature is the manifestation of musical modernism in various forms, each of the three festivals is distinguished by distinct program features and specifics of selection and presentation of contemporary music. The selection criteria, concerning the diverse meanings of the term contemporary music, were the strictest at the Music Biennale Zagreb. Unlike the Festival in Zagreb, the Annual Review of Yugoslav Music in Opatija was open to all the stylistic and compositional-technical tendencies of Yugoslav composers, while the concept of the Festival of Contemporary Chamber Music Slatina Radenci implied a strict distinction between contemporary music of the first and the second half of the twentieth century. Considering that in the period of post-war modernism the criteria for the evaluation of contemporary music, i.e. New Music, were intensely sought, the emergence of these festivals is interpreted as an attempt to establish organized mechanisms for solving such processes. Besides, these festivals included ideas about the potential creation of a recognizable style of contemporary Yugoslav music, which was a huge challenge, given the heterogeneity of stylistic and compositional-technical orientations of Yugoslav composers during the 1950s and 1960s. The doctoral dissertation also examines the reception of works by Yugoslav composers from the initial repertoires of the festivals, taking into account the general discourse on festivals of contemporary music by then domestic and foreign critics, who positioned these events highly, not only in music life, but also in the wider socio-cultural life of Yugoslavia (and, more broadly, of Europe, in the case of Music Biennale Zagreb).
In the context of the socio-political constellations in Yugoslavia and the world as a whole of the time, these festivals were interpreted as events of wider social significance, based on some of the main ideas of Yugoslav domestic policy (decentralization, the idea of ‘brotherhood and unity’) and foreign policy (strategy of non-alignment during the Cold War). By analyzing such a complex set of circumstances, this dissertation proves the transparent or indirect confrontation of musical and non-musical aspects in the functioning of the first Yugoslav festivals of contemporary music. A particular focus in the doctoral dissertation is given to the genesis of the festivals, that is, the complex processes that led to the founding of the festivals of contemporary music in Yugoslavia. In this regard, the research brings analysis of the interconnection of artistic and poetic principles and various activities, as well as concrete and official steps of certain persons in order to establish Yugoslav festivals of contemporary music. Thus, the engagement of the founder of the Music Biennale Zagreb, Milko Kelemen, is interpreted in alignment with his avant-garde worldview, with emphasis on Kelemen's activities in the light of cultural diplomacy of the former Yugoslavia. The establishment and functioning of the Annual Review of Yugoslav Music in Opatija are associated with aesthetic beliefs about the potential construction of an authentic style of Yugoslav contemporary music, and the political/ideological views of the founder of this Festival, Branimir Sakač (emphasizing the role of his associates, especially Belgrade esthetician Pavle Stefanović). The efforts of a composer from the Pomurje Region, Ladislav Vörös, founder of the Festival of Contemporary Chamber Music Slatina Radenci, were interpreted as a reflection of then ruling Yugoslav policy of decentralization. Furthermore, this research does not overlook the
involvement of certain persons from Ljubljana, who (indirectly) contributed to the establishment of the Festival in Radenci (Ivo Petrić, Pavel Šivic). The degree of realization of their efforts was interpreted as a result of the relatively favorable socio-political and artistic situation in Yugoslavia from 1948 to 1965. Given that the first three Yugoslav festivals of contemporary music were formed in less than four years, and that there is a direct or indirect intertwining of these festivals, Music Biennale Zagreb, Annual Review of Yugoslav Music (Opatija), and Festival of Contemporary Chamber Music Slatina Radenci were presented as the embodiment of heterogeneous, modernist, cultural-artistic, and socio-political tendencies in the context of Yugoslav postwar music culture development.

AB - The subject of our paper is the lexicological and linguacultural analysis of animal
names, which in secondary semantic realizations project the meaning of power,
whether political, economic, military, etc. (for example, the presentation of Serbia
as an “economic tiger” in the media, etc.). Our goal is to determine, based on the
examples, the relevant lexical mechanisms that lead to the transfer of the nomination
from animal to a specific concept that shapes the function of power as a certain
strength, influence, force, etc. In the research, we also include linguistic and cultural
aspects that should reflect the axiological attitudes of the Serbian linguistic and cultural
community towards the representatives of certain animals that bear the symbolism of
power and determine the cultural circumstances that shape Serbian public discourse to
use specific animals as symbols of power.

AB - Titanium nitride (TiN) is an attractive alternative for modern and future photonic applications, as its optical properties can be engineered over a wide spectral range. In this study, we have used sequential implantation of gold and silver ions with varying ion fluence, as well as subsequent annealing, in order to modify the optical and plasmonic properties of TiN thin films and correlated this to their structural properties. Our investigations show that the columnar structure of the TiN films is partially destroyed upon implantation, but metallic Au and Ag nanoparticles are formed. The irradiation further induces a reduction of the lattice constant as well as changes the TiN stoichiometry and grain size. From the optical point of view, the implanted films possess less metallicity with increasing Ag fluence and losses several times lower than the as-deposited film, which can be correlated with the deficiency of nitrogen and additional defects. Subsequent annealing partially recovered the destroyed columnar structure, and the films become more metallic where the optical losses are much smaller in comparison to the as-implanted situation, being comparable to those of pure Au and Ag. In this way, by varying the implantation fluence of silver ions properly while keeping the gold fluence constant, we were able to optimize experimental parameters in such a way to ensure the formation of TiN with desirable optical performances.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - Temperature- and humidity-sensing properties were evaluated of NixMg1-x spinel ferrites (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method using citric acid as fuel and nitrate ions as oxidizing agents. After the exothermic reaction, amorphous powders were calcined at 700 °C followed by characterization with XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS and Raman spectroscopy and FESEM microscopy. Synthesized powders were tested as humidity- and temperature-sensing materials in the form of thick films on interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate in a climatic chamber. The physicochemical investigation of synthesized materials revealed a cubic spinel Fd3¯m phase, nanosized but agglomerated particles with a partially to completely inverse spinel structure with increasing Ni content. Ni0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the highest material constant (B30,90) value of 3747 K and temperature sensitivity (α) of −4.08%/K compared to pure magnesium ferrite (B30,90 value of 3426 K and α of −3.73%/K) and the highest average sensitivity towards humidity of 922 kΩ/%RH in the relative humidity (RH) range of 40–90% at the working temperature of 25 °C.
