AB - Phosphors of (Y0.75Gd0.25)2O3:Eu3+ (5 at.%) have been prepared through soft chemistry routes. Conversion of the starting nitrates mixture into oxide is performed through two approaches: (a) hydrothermal treatment (HT) at 200 °C/3 h of an ammonium hydrogen carbonate precipitated mixture and (b) by thermally decomposition of pure nitrate precursor solution at 900 °C in dispersed phase (aerosol) within a tubular flow reactor by spray pyrolysis process (SP). The powders are additionally thermally treated at different temperatures: 600, 1000, and 1100 °C for either 3 or 12 h. HT—derived particles present exclusively one-dimensional morphology (nanorods) up to the temperatures of 600 °C, while the leaf-like particles start to grow afterward. SP—derived particles maintain their spherical shape up to the temperatures of 1100 °C. These submicron sized spheres were actually composed of randomly aggregated nanoparticles. All powders exhibits cubic Ia-3 structure (Y0.75Gd0.25)2O3:Eu and have improved optical characteristics due to their nanocrystalline nature. The detailed study of the influence of structural and morphological powder characteristics on their emission properties is performed based on the results of X-ray powder diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements.

AB - Red emitting Y2O3:Eu3+ (5 and 10 at.%) submicronic particles were synthesized through ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method from the pure nitrate solutions at 900 °C. The employed synthesis conditions (gradual increase of temperature within triple zone reactor and extended residence time) assured formation of spherical, dense, non-agglomerated particles that are nanostructured (crystallite size ∼20 nm). The as-prepared powders were additionally thermally treated at temperatures up to 1200 °C. A bcc Ia-3 cubic phase presence and exceptional powder morphological features were maintained with heating and are followed with particle structural changes (crystallite growth up to 130 nm). Emission spectra were studied after excitation with 393 nm wavelength and together with the decay lifetimes for Eu3+ ion 5D0 and 5D1 levels revealed the effect of powder nanocrystalline nature on its luminescent properties. The emission spectra showed typical Eu3+ 5D0 → 7Fi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions with dominant red emission at 611 nm, while the lifetime measurements revealed the quenching effect with the rise of dopant concentration and its more consistent distribution into host lattice due to the thermal treatment. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. AB - In this study, nanophase, spherical, polycrystalline (Y 1-xGdx)2O3:Eu3+phosphor particles were synthesized from aerosols of corresponding nitrate solutions, ultrasonically generated at 1.3 MHz frequency, and thermally decomposed at 900 and 1100°C. Structural and morphological analyses done by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and transmission electron microscopy analysis (TEM) implied the formation of non-aggregated spherical, submicronic particles with smooth particle surfaces and filled morphology. The phase development and structural changes, determined using the Topas program, implied a nanocrystalline inner structure (crystallites < 20 nm), that was also confirmed by SAED analysis. A bcc Ia-3 cubic phase was identified in all as-prepared samples, apart from the mixed oxide with the gadolinium content > 75%, where the existence of a secondary, fee Fm-3m cubic phase is determined. Only Ia-3 cubic phase was identified in thermally treated samples (1100 °C), while the powder morphological features were maintained, followed by increase in powder crystallinity and phase homogeneity. Functional properties were analyzed by means of photoluminescent analysis. Emission spectra showed typical Eu 3+ 5D0→7Fi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions with the dominant red emission peak at 611 nm.

AB - Ultrafine particles or nanoparticles (ranging from a few nanometers to 100 nm) are of considerable interest for a wide variety of applications, ranking from catalyst to luminescence ceramics, due to their unique and improved properties primarily determined by size, composition and structure. This study presents the preparation and characterization of nanostructured spherical alumina particles by the Spray Pyrolysis method for the application in reinforcements of metal-matrix composites (MMCs). Synthesis procedure includes aerosol formation ultrasonically from alumina nitrate water solution and its decomposition into a tubular flow reactor at 700 °C. The obtained particles are spherical, smooth, amorphous and in non-agglomerated state. Microstructural and morphological analyses were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and analytical and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM). AB - Europium-doped (Y0.5Gd0.5)2O3 phosphor powder is synthesized via spray pyrolysis of polymeric precursor solution obtained by dissolving the stoichiometric amount of corresponding metal nitrates in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) - ethylene glycol (EG) mixture. The 0.1M true stable solution is obtained after pH correction with NH4OH (final pH=8.7). Ultrasonically (1.3MHz) generated aerosol droplets are decomposed at 550 oC in argon atmosphere. Following the initial attempt for obtaining dense, nanostructured spherical particles of pure (Y0.5Gd0.5)2O3:Eu3+ phase, as-prepared dark-gray powder is additionally thermally treated for 12 h in air up to 1100 oC. The particle morphology is analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Phase identification is performed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) based on which the structural refinement through Rietveld method was done. Particle chemical purity is confirmed through EDS analysis, while laser particle sizer is used for determination of the particle size distribution.

Phase identification is performed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) based on which a structural refinement through Rietveld method was done. The spherical submicronic particles have grained sub-structure comprising clustered garnet monocrystals sized below 100 nm. The YAG:Ce3+ emission shows wide peak in the range 470-600 nm with the maximum near 520 nm. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The diversity and potentials of the aerosol route for making functional materials at the nano size level are reviewed. Among the methods currently used for nanophase processing, synthesis through dispersion phase (aerosol) enables generation of ultrafine, either single or complex powders with controlled stoichiometry, chemical and phase content provided by high surface reaction, high heating and cooling rates and short residence time. It represents a "bottom-up" chemical approach and provides control over a variety of important parameters for particle processing. This may favors to the formation of either amorphous, nanocrystalline or metastable phases implying a huge impact in the search for advanced functional materials having novel and unique structures and properties. Particularly, the opportunities of the hot wall aerosol synthesis, i.e. spray pyrolysis, for the generation of ultrafine spherical particles with uniformly distributed components, phases and nano-clustered inner structure and luminescence properties is demonstrated with various analyzing tecniques like XRPD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, STEM and nanotomography. Following the initial attempts, a more detailed aspect of the several phosphor particles generation based on Gd2O3:Eu, Y2O3:Eu, (Y1-xGdx)2O3:Eu and Y3Al5O12:Ce is reviewed highlighting the research activities in the Institute of Technical Sciences of SASA, Serbia. © 2009 Hosokawa Powder Technology Foundation.

AB - Gadolinium and Ytrium oxides doped with europium (Gd2O3:Eu, Y2O3:Eu) have luminiscent properties. Such properties are improved with the use of nanostructured materials with spherical geometry and narrow particle size distribution. Besides, luminescent properties enhance with a homogeneous distribution of dopant centers in the host matrix material. In this paper the synthesis and characterization of gadolinium and yttrium doped with different proportions of Europium are shown. Nanostructured particles were synthesized through Spray Pyrolysis route in a tubular furnace at different temperatures, and subjected to different post-thermal treatments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used for the morphological, chemical and structural characterization of the nanoparticles.

AB - Y2O3 doped with europium is a well known red phosphor material employed in modern high-resolution display devices such as plasma display panels (PDP) and field emission displays (FED). The incorporation of gadolinium in the yttria matrix may significantly contribute to the luminescent properties and x-ray absorption coefficient thus increasing the field of application in optoelectronic devices such as ceramic scintillators for computed tomography. In this work, the nanostructured particles of Y 2 O 3 doped with Eu 3+ were processed through the spray pyrolysis method. Synthesis was carried out with an ultrasonic aerosol device operating at 1.3 MHz in air atmosphere connected with a triple-zone tubular flow reactor (473-973-1173K). Particles were submitted t o post- thermal treatments at temperatures among 1273 and 1 573K for 12 hours in order to increase the crystallinity and uniform distribution of doped centers. Morphology, structure, crystallinity and chemical characteristics were studied by XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM-HRTEM and SAED. The particles obtained are spherical, having narrow size distributions, high compositional homogeneity and are in unagglomerated state. The effects of synthesis parameters were followed and discussed in terms of particle structure and morphology.

AB - Morphology control in the (Na,H)2TinO2n+1 system has been achieved by introducing particle size as the key parameter during hydrothermal synthesis. The process is applied for the synthesis of TiO2-based nanofibers and nanotubes from natural rutile sand. The method is favorable for large-scale production due to the simple synthetic approach and the low-cost precursor used. The morphology of the final product is controlled through variation of the precursor particle size by mechanical milling prior to hydrothermal treatment. Hydrothermal alkali treatment of natural rutile sand without milling at 140 °C for 70 h resulted in the formation of nanofibers. Some portion of unreacted rutile coexisted in the reaction product. However, when the adequately milled precursor was used under the same condition, the unreacted material disappeared in the product, while the morphology of the product was changed from nanofibers to nanotubes. To the best of our knowledge tubular nanostructures of titanates have not been synthesized from rutile mineral sand yet. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

AB - The synthesis of ultrafine, spherical particles with uniformly distributed components and phases is of special importance when materials for modern optoelectronic application are considered. Synthesis through dispersion phase (aerosol) represents a feasible method for obtaining fine, nanostructured materials with controlled composition of either single or complex powders with improved properties provided by high surface reaction and short residence time.
In this study, nanophased, spherical, polycrystalline Y2O3:Eu3+ and (Y1-xGdx)2O3:Eu3+ phosphor particles having improved luminescence properties are synthesized from aerosol of the corresponding nitrates solution ultrasonically generated with frequency 1.3 MHz and thermally decomposed at 900-1200ºC. The influence of different Eu3+ doping concentration (5 and 10at%) is investigated as well as the influence of gadolinium content in the structure of the mixed oxide (x=0.25, 0.50, 0.75). For the applied synthesis parameters structural, morphological and functional properties of the investigated systems are correlated.
Morphological and chemical properties are investigated by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy in combination with quantitative EDS analysis (SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS) and it is shown that the obtained powders are non-agglomerated with smooth surface and spherical morphology and that they possess high material purity and compositional homogeneity. Stereological analysis of SEM micrographs for Y2O3:Eu3+ system additionally revealed that the particles are highly spherical (form factor fL=0.95) and that approximately 80% of particles have size distribution in the range of 300-800nm, while the main particle size is around 600nm. Powder phase analysis is done by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), transmission electron microscopy in combination with selected are electron diffraction (TEM/SAED) and high resolution TEM combined with fast Furrier transforms (HRTEM/FFT). The phase development and structural changes are additionally followed through Rietveld structural refinement in Topas Academic software. This analysis showed nanocrystal inner structure (crystallite size 20 nm) of particles, which is also confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analysis. It is shown that all as-prepared samples have bcc Ia-3 cubic phase, apart from the mixed oxide with the highest gadolinium content (75%; composition (Y0.25Gd0.75)2O3:Eu3+). In this sample the existence of a secondary, fcc Fm-3m cubic phase is determined. Through the additional thermal treatment (1000-1200°C) the morphological features of powders is maintained and a higher crystallinity of the investigated samples is achieved, as well as powder phase homogeneity by the presence of Ia-3 cubic phase in all the samples. Transmission electron microscopy gave an insight of inner particle morphology, namely, particles possess field morphology and they are consisted out of primary nanoparticle aggregates with dimensions around 20nm. The size of primary nanoparticles corresponds to calculated crystallite size which increases with the increase of thermal treatment temperature (from 40nm/1000°C up to 130nm/1200°C).
Functional properties of the investigated systems are analyzed by means of photoluminescent analysis. Emission spectra showed a typical Eu3+ 5D0→7Fi (i=1, 2, 3, 4) transitions with the dominant red emission peak at 611nm. Life time measurement of europium ion 5D0 and 5D1 levels showed that the obtained powders have improved characteristic in comparison to bulk material, that concentration quenching occurs in the case of 10 at% europium doping and that the crossrelaxation effect is dominant for as-prepared samples in comparison to thermally treated ones. This implied that thermal treatment led to a more homogeneous distribution of doping ion within the host lattice.

AB - High purity europium-doped gadolinia (Gd2O3:Eu3+) have been prepared using spray pyrolysis technique yielding nanostructured non-agglomerated particles with spherical morphology. Comparative microstructural analysis was done for different europium concentrations. The particle homogeneity, crystallization and nanostructure development were analyzed using XRD, TEM-HRTEM and EFTEM. The existence of two different cubic phases has been identified in as-prepared samples: a bcc (SG Ia3) and a fcc (Fm-3m). After the thermal treatment only the cubic Ia3 phase has been observed with the cell parameters affected with Eu3+ doping concentration and temperature, followed with progressive increase in crystallite size.

AB - The common nitrates precursor solution leading to the Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce) composition with 2 at.% of cerium, is ultrasonically atomised and introduced into the tubular flow reactor at 320 degrees C. Having in mind that extremely high heating rates and short residence time are associated with spray pyrolysis, the low temperature regime is used for aerosol decomposition for the production of segregation-free precursor powder that is additionally heated at 900 and 1000 degrees C (2-6h) for the purpose to determine the phase evolution. Formation of uniform and submicron-sized spherical particles with nano-clustered inner structure is proved by different analysing techniques (X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy). The effect of processing parameters and post-annealing treatment is discussed from the viewpoint of the targeted garnet phase formation.
