AB - A promising method for removal of Cs ions from water and their incorporation into stable crystal structure ready for safe and permanent disposal was described. Cs-exchanged X zeolite was hot-pressed at temperature ranging from 800 to 950 °C to fabricate dense pollucite ceramics. It was found that the application of external pressure reduced the pollucite formation temperature. The effect of sintering temperature on density, phase composition and mechanical properties was investigated. The highest density of 92.5 %TD and the highest compressive strength of 79 MPa were measured in pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C for 3 h. Heterogeneity of samples obtained at 950 °C was determined using scanning electron microscopy. The pollucite hot-pressed at 950 °C had low linear thermal expansion coefficient of ∼4.67 × 10−6 K−1 in the temperature range from 100 to 1000 °C. © 2019

AB - The influence of different milling conditions obtained using two high-energy mills on hydrogen desorption from MgH2-WO3 composites was investigated. The morphology, particle and crystallite size were studied as a function of milling speed, vial's volume, and ball-to-powder ratio. The vial's fill level, the number, and type of milling balls and additive's content kept constant. Changes in morphology and microstructure were correlated to desorption properties of materials. Higher milling speed reduced particle size but, there is no significant crystallite size reduction. On the other hand, additive distribution is similar regardless of the energy input. It has been noticed that different energy input on milling blend, which is the result of combined effects of above-mentioned factors, reflects on desorption temperature but not on the kinetics of desorption. In fact, desorption mechanism changes from 2D to 3D growth with constant nucleation rate, despite obtained changes in microstructure or chemical composition of the material.

AB - Hybrid geopolymers represent a new class of composite materials formed by incorporating organic polymer into a geopolymer matrix. The properties of hybrid geopolymer depend on the addition of organic phase and the starting raw material composition (concentration of NaOH in alkaline activator, Si/Al mass ratio and solid/liquid mass ratio). In addition to these relevant parameters, this paper examines the synthesis conditions of these materials through the influence of the type, amount and manner of adding organic modifiers (commercial epoxy resins and 3- (methoxyl) propyl methacrylates) on forming the structure with significantly reduced pore distribution and decreased pore size, which exhibits good mechanical properties. The purpose of this research is to define the optimal conditions of the hybrid geopolymers' synthesis through the examination of relevant parameters. Expected improvement of mechanical properties was confirmed through values of compressive stength. Characterization of hybrid geopolymer composities was performed by XRD analysis, DRIFT spectroscopy and SEM analysis.

AB - In a field of green chemistry, environmental protection and ecological conservation of the environment there are ways to come up with new and more advanced materials using on the one hand natural, recyceled or waste materials and on the other hand syntethic materials obtained by using green chemistry synthesis procedures. The aim of this paper was to synthesize and characterize Brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials and to examine the possibility of using these materials in the fields of construction, cement industry, as well as in environmental protection as potential adsorbents. Initial materials which were used for geopolymer synthesis was Brushite (CaHPO4·2H2O) which was obtained by solutionprecipitation reaction form acetate solutions and Kaolinite clay from Rudovci deposit (Serbia). The obtained mixture powders were dissolved in a strong alcaline solution with addiction of water glass. Produced geopolymers was cast into mods and preserved for 28 days. The starting materials and the synthesized Brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer material were examined using XRPD, FTIR SEM-EDS methods. The contact angle measurements were made to test hydrophilic and wettable properties of synthesized material.

AB - In order to optimize process of geopolymerization, the investigation of thermodynamic parameters of alkali activators are important. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of thermodynamic parameters (density, viscosity, refractive index and sound velocity) of alkaline activators on mechanical properties (compressive strength and hardness) of synthesized geopolymer samples. Geopolymers were synthetized by alkaline activation of metakaolin, having the density 2.524 g/cm3, using the activators at elevated temperature of 60 oC for two days. Based on the obtained results thermodynamic properties has been selected to predict the properties of materials. Four series of alkaline activators have been used. Activators remarked as AA1, AA2, AA3 and AA4 present the mixtures of Na2SiO3 and solutions of NaOH, of different molarities 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M respectively. The volume ratio of Na2SiO3 and aqueous solution of NaOH was the same for all samples. Densities, viscosities and refractive indices of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range 15-60 oC of process of geopolymerizations. The values of density, viscosity and refractive index decrease with temperature increase over the investigated temperature range. Increasing molarity of alkali activator solutions, the sound velocity of activators is changed. For sample AA2 the values of sound velocity rises from room temperature to 45 °C and then begins to decrease while for the sample AA3 sound velocity grows until 30 °C and then starts to decrease with further increasing of temperature. Four series of geopolymer samples GP1 to GP4 were synthesiyed using the constant ratio of solid and liquid phase. FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS methods were used for physicochemical further characterization of geopolymer samples.

AB - Geopolymers (GP) were successfully synthesized from metabentonite (MB), metadiatomite (MD) and metakaolinite (MK). Characterization of their phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. A SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel, and it is significantly different from the micrographs of the other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK. A considerable amount of unreacted particles, as well as the presence of pores in the geopolymer matrix of GPMK and GPMD, indicate an incomplete reaction in the system. Aluminosilicate inorganic polymers, geopolymers, are quasi solid electrolytes which possess a high electrical conductivity at room temperature in relation to materials of similar chemical composition. The highest conductivity was found for the sample obtained from GPMK, amounting to 2.14 × 10–2 Ω–1cm–1at 700 ºC. The corresponding activation energies of conductivity for this sample amounted to 0.33 eV in the temperature range of 500–700 ºC. The geopolymer synthesized from metakaolin has good ionic conductivity values, which recommends it for use as an alternative material for an SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell).

AB - The purpose of this investigation is to investigate the hydrophobicity of geopolymers, new alumino-silicate materials and the influence of Si/Al ratio on their surface properties. Contact angle measurement (CAM) as reliable indicator of hydrophobicity was determined for synthesized geopolymers using water and ethylene-glycol as reference liquids. Geopolymers were synthesized from various precursors: kaolin, bentonite and diatomite. Characterization of phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. Contact angle measurements confirmed that the geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin are the most porous, which can be explained by the smallest Si/Al ratio. The maximum value of contact angle and free surface energy (110.2 mJ/m2) has been achieved for geopolymer synthesized by diatoms (GPMD). SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel and is significantly different from the micrographs of other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK.

AB - This paper presents mineralogical and crystallographic characterization of the zeolitic tuff from the Novakovic deposit, Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The zeolitic tuff is of a whitish color composed of Ca-clinoptilolite and an amorphous phase (volcanic glass and amorphous SiO 2 ). The zeolitic tuff was analyzed by X-ray diffraction of the polycrystalline sample (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and differential thermal and thermogravimetric (DTA/DTG) methods. According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that the studied zeolitic tuff is composed of Heu-type minerals. Based on the chemical analysis, thermal treatment and XRPD analysis it was determined that this is a mineral Ca-clinoptilolite. Thermal analysis in the temperature range from 300 up to 700°C showed that the examined zeolite minerals from the Novaković deposit are stable up to the temperature of 600°C. The crystal structure of Ca-clinoptilolite has been refined in the centrosymmetric space group C2/m (S.G. 12) with disordered distribution of Al and Si in the tetrahedral framework. The unit-cell parameters are as follows: a = 17.662 Å, b = 17.874 Å, c = 7.402 Å, β = 116.32° and V = 2122.73 Å 3 . The basic structural motif is represented by four channels. Three channels are composed of eight-membered rings, and one of ten-membered rings. The ten-membered (channel A) and one eight-membered channel (B) are parallel to the crystallographic axis c, and the other eight-membered channel is parallel to the a-axis. Ca-clinoptilolite comprises approximately 90 % of the studied zeolite tuff while the rest 10 % is the amorphous phase. The overall cation exchange capacity (CEC) amounts to 187 mmolM + / 100 g, and calcium represents the most abundant cation in the studied sample. The atomic ratios of Si/Al, Na + /(Na + +K + ), and Ca 2+ /(Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ ) are as follows: 4.36, 0.14, and 0.55, respectively. The zeolite tuff is both thermally and structurally stable and has applications in various areas of industry and agriculture. © 2018, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB - Considering geopolymers as inorganic polymers, they are actually amorphous network of interlinked silicate and aluminate groups, so they could be prospective ceramic precursors for materials with defined dimensions obtained by casting and firing, but not from powder processing. In this research, the starting material is metakaolin, which was obtained by calcining domes tic kaolinite clay. Initially, four series of alkaline activators of NaOH and sodium silicate have been used. Activators present the mixtures of Na2SiO3 and solutions of NaOH, of different molarities 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M. The prepared geopolymer slurries were cast into the designated near shape at room temperature and after that at 60oC. In fact, the post-synthesis curing process (28 days) has an important role in the obtaining good characteristics of geopolymers. Densities, viscosities and refractive index of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range 15-60oC of process of geopolymerizations. Based on the obtained results of investigated parameters have been selected to predict the properties of materials. All geopolymer samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS analysis and Raman spectroscopy providing complementary and valuable information of the investigated materials. This route of ceramics production has advantages associated with producing an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean new technology of geopolymer materials.

AB - The goal of this research was to produce an environmental friendly, energy saving inorganic polymer using a metakaolin as a precursor. The clean technology which conserve the natural environment was employed for the production of these materials. The used kaolinite is clay obtained from Rudovci, Lazarevac, Serbia. Physicochemical properties of kaolin were investigated in previous work by Nenadović et al. [1]. Metakaolin (MK) was prepared by calcining kaolinite at 750 °C for 1 h. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of polymerization of metakaolin is investigated. The alkaline solution was prepared from sodium silicate and 2M, 4M, 6M and 8 M NaOH (analytical grade) (volume ratio Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1.6). The inorganic polymer (IP) samples were formed from metakaolin and the four different alkaline solution (solid/liquid ratio was about 1), which were mixed for 15 min and then left at room temperature for one day. Finally, the mixture was kept in a sample drying oven for 2 days at 60 °C. Process of aging time of inorganic polymer samples at 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days is followed by some analytical methods (XRD, FTIR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for characterization of metakaolin and metakaolin based inorganic polymers. After 28th days when the aging time were finished, on the surface of the samples were used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis almost of all inorganic polymer samples revealed their amorphouslike structure with the position of an amorphous halo in the range 18°-32°, which indicates short range ordering of the reference sample with crystalline admixture of SiO2 (α-quartz, ICSD 89). The FTIR spectra of all samples shows a strong peak at ∼1000 cm−1 which is associated with Si–O–Si asymmetric stretching vibrations and is the finger print of the geopolymerization [2,3]. The FT-IR results show a shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X bands as the molarity of activator increasing during polymerization process, where X can be Si or Al. Both methods and XRD, as well as FTIR, show greater sensitivity to monitoring the effects of molarity, than the aging time within the same molarity to structural changes in inorganic polymer. SEM micrographs (Fig.1) showed a denser matrix, and a lower content of unreacted metakaolin particles due to increasing of molarity of NaOH. Structural reorganization of inorganic polymer samples occurs during the curing or aging in accordance with a polymerization mechanism.

AB - The paper presents chemical and structural analysis of geopolymer materials which are obtained by alkali-activated calcined clay (metakaolin) originated from Serbia under strictly defined conditions. Characterization of the metakaolin and geopolymers molecular structure has been done using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The paper presents the possibility of obtaining geopolymer structure and differences in chemical and structural characterization of these materials taking into account the concentration of NaOH as a variable parameter. The results of MALDI analysis of metakaolin and synthesized geopolymer structures using various matrix system: 2,4,6 trihydroxyacetophenone (THAP), α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic, 2,6 dihydroxyacetophenone and laser desorption/ionization, have shown that THAP matrix is the most appropriate for analysing these aluminosilicate materials.

AB - Magnesium hydride, as hydrogen storage material, meets the requirements such as high gravimetric hydrogen capacity (7,6 wt%), low cost and weight, abundance and H2 absorption/desorption cycling possibility. Given that the oxide additives show the good impact on desorption properties, mechanical milling of MgH2 with addition of 5, 10 and 15% wt. WO3 was performed. The microstructure and morphology of composites were analysed by XRD, PSD and SEM and correlated to hydrogen desorption properties which have been investigated by DSC. The results have shown that WO3 has a positive effect on the desorption kinetics as well as on the change of the desorption mechanism.

AB - This article presents the results of the compositional, structural and morphological study of geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin and an alkali activator. The study involved the investigation of the structural and chemical properties of the geopolymer, in addition to thermally treated geopolymers up to 600 and 900 °C. The precursor of the geopolymer, and the geopolymer samples before and after the thermal treatment, were investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analysis. The corrected average value of the ratio of silicon and aluminum in the geopolymer samples (SiGP:Al) is about 1.46, which suggests that the obtained geopolymer samples represent a mixture of roughly equal amounts of sialate and sialate-siloxo units. Annealing the geopolymer samples at 600 °C decreases the amount of Si-ONa bonds and induces the cross-linking of polymer changes. At the same time, other sodium containing alumino-silicate phases are created. The thermal treatment at 900 °C leads to a considerable reduction of oxygen and particularly sodium, followed by significant morphological changes i.e. formation of a complex porous structure. Additionally, a new semicrystaline phase appears. Both XRD and XPS results imply that this new phase may be nepheline and it is plausible that this phase begins to nucleate at temperatures below 900 °C.

AB - In this paper, bismuth ferrite (BFO) particles synthesized by controlled hydrothermal process, where the particles of small sizes and with high purity were obtained. Structural analysis showed that non-annealed powder can be perfectly fitted to rhombohedral space group R3c and contains a very small amount of secondary phase, whereas the final product (annealed at 800 °C) represents single-phase perovskite powder with high crystallinity. HRTEM analysis confirmed existence of twin stacking faults, which are responsible for enhanced magnetic properties. EPR measurements suggested existence of electrons trapped by vacancies or defects. It has been proposed that existence of Fe3+ −OV defect complex could be generated at elevated temperatures followed by formation of trivalent Fe ions, which intensely provide local 3d moments.

AB - Cesium aluminosilicate phases are of the great interest as possible host for Cs immobilization in radioactive waste management. The possibility to use zeolite as a host material for radioactive Cs immobilization was investigated. Cs-exchanged forms of clinoptilolite and 13X which were prepared by ion-exchange treatment were compacted. The powders compacts of exchanged zeolites were thermally treated at 1200 °C. The XRD analysis showed that Cs was successfully immobilized after heat treatment by formation of stable cesium-aluminosilicate ceramic forms. Thermal and mechanical properties of the sintered samples were investigated. From the perspective of these characteristics, Cs-exchanged zeolite (clinoptilolite and 13 X) can be considered as a potential material for safe waste disposal.

AB - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of ageing of mechanochemically synthesized clay and its TiO2composite on the simultaneous removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions from acidic aqueous solutions. The effect of different ageing times on sorption behavior of 1, 2, 10 and 19 h milled clays, as well as the clay composite with 20 wt% of amorphous TiO2(TiO2,a), was investigated. Ageing of the milled clays has stronger influence on the removal of Zn(II) and Cd(II) than on the removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions. Ageing is particularly pronounced for the samples milled for 1, 2 and 10 h (which lost enhanced sorption properties after 3 months of ageing), and less pronounced for the samples milled longer period of time, 19 h (which retained sorption properties until 6 months). After these periods of time sorption capacities became nearly the same as the sorption capacities of the raw (unmilled) clay. The different responses on the ageing process of milled clays and composite are a consequence of microstructural changes such as recrystallization of montmorillonite phase and decrease in particle sizes. Slower ageing of composite compare to the milled clays can be related to the stabilization effect of TiO2particles which are dispersed in the clay matrix thus preventing recrystallization of the sample particles. Only a slight tendency towards the formation of agglomerations was noticed after 12 months of ageing. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the Cs+ ions sorption on natural minerals clinoptilolite. The analysis of clinoptilolite and clinoptilolite with adsorbed Cs+ ion was con- ducted by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and gamma spectrometry. The specific activity of naturally occurring radionuclides in clinoptilolite was determined by gamma spectrometry by using the HPGe semiconductor detector. Obtained activity concentrations ranged from 49 Bq/kg to 810 Bq/kg for 40K, 5.7 Bq/kg to 10 Bq/kg for 238U, 5.8 Bq/kg to 70 Bq/kg for 232Th(228Ac), and the presence of artificial radionuclides was not detected (137Cs < 0.02 Bq/kg). The study of the thermal decomposition of raw clinoptilolite and Cs adsorbed clinoptilolite by differential thermal analysis is presented in this paper. The activation energy of the reaction phase transformation of raw clinoptilolite is 156.7 kJ/mol, while Cs adsorbed clinoptilolite is 121.7 kJ/mol. The lower value of activation energy reaction of the phase transformation Cs adsorbed clinoptilolite indicates that Cs which is adsorbed destabilizes the crystal structure of clinoptilolite and thus facilitates the transition to the amorphous state. AB - Porous aluminium-silicate ceramics, modified by alloying with magnesium and microalloying with alluminium belongs to a group of advanced multifunctional ceramics materials. This multiphase solid-solid system has predominantly amorphous microstructure and micro morphology. Intergranular and interphase areas are very complex, because they represent areas, where numbered processes and interactions take place, making new boundaries and regions with fractal nature. Fractal analysis of intergranular microstructure has included determination of ceramic grain fractal dimension by using Richardson method. Considering the fractal nature of intergranular contacts, it is possible to establish correlation between material electrical properties and fractal analysis, as a tool for future correlation with microstructure characterization. AB - The influence of structural changes caused by irradiation with different ions, their energies and fluences on sorption properties has been investigated. Results suggest that there are several mechanisms of desorption depending on defect concentration, their interaction and ordering. It has been also demonstrated that the changes in near-surface area play the crucial role in hydrogen desorption kinetics. It is confirmed that there is possibility to control the thermodynamic parameters of these systems by controlling vacancies depth profile and concentration.

AB - The removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions using (un)modified Serbian interstratified montmorillonite/kaolinite clay as an adsorbent was investigated. The clay was modified by mechanochemical activation for different time periods. X-ray diffraction patterns and particle size distributions were used to characterize the samples. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to optimize various conditions. The adsorption equilibrium was established within 60 min, and the maximum adsorption occurred in the pH range of 4.5–6.5. The milled clays exhibited greater equilibrium adsorption capacities (qe) for all of the metals than the raw clay. A difference in qe values for clays milled for 2 and 19 h could be observed only for initial concentrations (Ci) of ≥100 mg dm–3. This was related to the amorphization (i.e., exfoliation) of 19-h-milled clay particles. The adsorption equilibrium data of heavy metals on both raw and modified clays fit the Langmuir equation, although there were changes in the microstructure of the clay. The mechanochemical treatment of the clay reduced the amount of adsorbent necessary to achieve a highly efficient removal of heavy metals by a factor of 5. Thus, the mechanochemically treated interstratified clay can be considered as an efficient adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of divalent heavy metals.
